Edited by: ElectroPulsar on 22/01/2010 01:15:32 Edited by: ElectroPulsar on 22/01/2010 01:00:46 Hello all :)
I just got a new computer and installed Windows 7 on it. Everything was running fine until I installed and Eve Online on my computer and tried to run it. When I alt-tabb out of Eve Online, the screen gets very dim. Also, when I exit Eve online it does the same thing. My brother has the exact same computer as me, but he has no problem with it.
Has anybody else had this problem? If so, have you found a solution to it? The only way to make my screen and not the Emma is to try to open a program and that brings up a windows user account control prompt asking if I want to run it, but then if I try to go back into Eve, then alt-tab or exit it, it does the same thing again.
Thanks!
P.P.S. Some additional information that could be of value: I am running with an ATI 5850 graphics card.
P.S. I just updated the drivers and still no difference.

Well I have Windows 7 x64, so I don't now which version your running but try running it in windowed mode with "EveMover" this way you don't have the game minimizing to the taskbar. |

Exactly the same happened for me when I played with 30-bit color depth. |

I have problem too. - Win7 64, 8 gig ram, ATI Sapphire Radeon 4870 512, - Fresh installation, latest drivers
Problems noticed so far: - cannot Alt-Tab out from game - cannot enter windowed mode (on XP I play non stop in windowed mode)
Every time I try above, EVE freezes, cursor vanishes from the screen. Also keyboard stops responding, so no Win+D, no task manager, no CTRL+Q, no ALT+F4 Only forced shutdown (pressing PC power button for 6 secs) helps.
Other installed stuff works flawlessly.
Any suggestion?

Yes i have had the same problem for months, first time i heard anyone else having the same issue. I have a 4870 1GB - Win7 64-bit.
It happens when i alt-tab, or exit Eve. If i change from fullscreen to windowed (alt-enter) and exit game it's fine, no more dim background. So thats how i exit Eve nowadays and then full screen it again next time i play.
Otherwise the only quick fix is to switch resolution and back again, or disable/enable a 2nd display.
One strange thing is that this error once fixed itself on a previous installation, maybe when the ATI drivers were updated yet since i have reinstalled they havent released any new ones. I am Using Catalyst 9.12.
I might try installing an older set of drivers (9.11) and then updating those with the latest version. Will let you know if that fixes for me. |

Strange, I run Win7 64, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 4770 512MB, and have no issues.
I read something about 30 bit colors giving issues, so make sure you set everything to 24 bit ingame. Latest drivers work fine. Uninstalling drivers and reinstalling sometimes helps to fix strange issues.
I do run EVE with administrator rights checked in compatibility tab. And I disabled UAC ( because it got annoying, this should not have an impact tho ).
Before reinstalling drivers you can also reset them to default settings.
Also to be able to maximize a windowed EVE I use EVEMon, but also had to check run as admin in compatibility tab.
Finally I always run my accounts on different installations, I have 2 accounts, so have EVE1 folder and EVE2 folder.

In win7 the screen "going dim" generally is because the system is asking if you want to "allow a program to do something". Quite often the prompt box is hidden behind another window, sometimes it's just not visible. You can normally tab through the various windows to find the box, even if it isn't visible on the toolbar.
If your desktop is set (for instance) to 24bit and the game is set to 30bit, when you change from the game to the desktop by "tabbing out" the system thinks that you are changing the desktop from 30 to 24. This requires an "administrator" to Okay the action and the prompt box appears. Just opening and closing the application affects the system differently, so you wouldn't see the prompt box.
If you are running in a windowed mode then the game and the desktop will be running at the same settings (if not then you get some serious lag issues) and so you don't see the problem.

This is not true. I run a full administrator account with no UAC and the dimming occurs. This is because the 30bit colour scheme does not line up with the 24bit colour used on the desktop. A 16 or 32 colour scheme can line up if it uses the same pattern. A 30bit scheme most definately uses 10bits per colour so when it is applied to a 24bit situation it ends up using the darker end of the colour spectrum it represents. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

Same issue, here is my setup:
win 7 64 bit EAH 4890 - 1gb Drivers 9.11 (had to go back from 10.2 because COD would crash every time)
when I alt tab, screen goes dim, switched to 24 as thread suggest, now it seems to be ok.
