BTW have you tried joining a corp in a 0.0 alliance?
Im thinking 0.0 might be worth a try. My original hope was decent sized pvp battles. Does that happen pretty frequently in 0.0?
Read CAOD about what has been going on the past 2 weeks in 49-u system. 1300 ships, lag all around. nodes crashing. epic turkey shoots. its amazing out there.

o I dunno about that :P
I stopped bothering with real corps after getting dec'd in a few then everyone playing spin the ship...
Solo can be rather exciting amongst the hours and hours and hours of boredom...
I decided to check out some WHs with me and my trusty alt...went in a couple holes, checked out a site, almost got wtfpwnt by sleepers my first time, came back in better tanked bses...then one day I ended up in an occupied wh...and the locals were none too friendly...as soon as I jumped in the damn thing closed on me...seeing combat probes out on directional I started fleetwarping all over the place making bookmarks between celestials. I spent a hair raising 30 or 40 minutes trying to probe out an exit while avoiding a ship named "I see dead people" on directional and his combat probes repeatedly. I'd find a spot and think I was safe to start narrowing down my scans, then all of a sudden "I see dead people" would show up on directional or his probes. Now that was a rush :)
Solo pvp sux tho, I roam lowsec in my neighborhood sometimes solo and usually get popped by a gang...although getting in on a fight already in progress and both sides ignoring you can be kinda fun, especially when you throw some ewar drones on someone then go after the tacklers on the other side and take a few out ;)

There is your mistake. Eve is about doing what you want to do, not what you are supposed to do. You need to find what you want to be doing in Eve. Get out there and try things out.
I endorse RvB if you're looking for some quick, fun PvP.

If you really can't come up with your own goals goals and simply have to be led by the hand or forced into paths by linear design then, as has been said, WoW is over that way -->

Of course it does. That's because you're not SUPPOSED to do anything. You can sit in your hangar all day long and station-trade. You can mine belts all day, or kill NPCs in belts all day, or run missions all day. And a lot of other things you CAN do, if you WANT to. But you're not SUPPOSED to do _anything_ in particular.
Everything you do is done in order to accomplish your own particular goals, those you have set for yourself... ...or because you have nothing else better to do at the time (or for the lulz - that's always a good reason). You were given a lot of toys and a permissive rule set... and you're just sitting there sampling the tiniest of portions from those toys and rules... is it our fault or the game's fault you GOT BORED playing ?
Let's put it another way : do hunters in the real-world complain hunting is boring as hell ? If you answer "no, they don't", then you'd be talking about the hardcore hunters, those that don't mind looking for then stalking their prey for hours or even days to make just one kill, if that's really what it takes, and the kill is much sweeter when you really worked for it. If you answer "yes, they are", you're talking about the casual hunters, those that figuratively end up "shooting fish in a barrel" on areas of land laid out in such a way that the noise-making team drives all wild animals in front of these so-called "hunters". If you ask me, I fail to see the fun in THAT kind of hunting, but then again, there will always be those that do find it fun. Which extreme would you say you're closer to ?

Since I am too lazy today to read the rest of the thread I will simply reply.
Eve=Sandbox
Content in eve is 99% built up from your own imagination then harvested with careful execution.
So if you can't figure out what to do in a sandbox then this is not the game for you and STO with its nearly 99% linear mmo on rails progression and scripted instanced pve awaits.

In Eve, just like in life, if you're bored and don't know what to do, it's your own fault.

Find new and creative ways to be evil. Start a child **** ring in game and be declared a hero for doing what no one has done before in the sandbox. Start a contest to see how many people you can get to commit suicide in RL by ruining their day.

Edited by: MaceMakaio on 19/01/2010 04:32:26 Its a SANDBOX game, get a bucket and shovel.. seriously EvE is not for everyone and is limited to imagination if you have none well there you go.. I have been playin since 06' and still find interesting stuff to do everyday. Get into a corp with Vent or TS maybe an alliance with some 0.0 the options are endless, hell even getting somewhere is an adventure in itself. Look at the map statistics see what has been goin on peek your head in to take a look around oportunities are everywhere.. If you do need content and dot to dot thinking then WoW will be your cup of tea. |

Im in a Corp but its a small one in high sec. I had the thought maybe I should switch corps but havent wanted to because the guys Ive been playing with are good people. But all everyone in the corp seems to do is mine or run missions. Mining I have no interest in and missions Ive done enough to make me vomit.
I'm in the same boat as you, though I'm not about to quit
my corp is a pretty big but all they do is mission or mine all day long and as soon as we get a war dec, orders are to hide in station till the enemy gets board... its boaring and dumb but I dont know if I can afford to leave to corp

The best name I've seen for EvE in these forums so far is "Cannibals in Space".
This isn't because of the game design as such. But it's easier for a negative-style player (ganker/griefer/scammer) to find entertainment in EvE than a positive-style player (explore/build/combat). Naturally over time you'll find relatively more players with negative play styles in EvE than in other games.
Others can find entertainment in EvE, but it takes more time and more effort than if you get your fun from stealing others' fun.

What he said.
I've come back to EVE after a long while. I didn't leave because I was bored. I left because I had other things that needed my attention in RL.
EVE requires you think about what you want to do and create a character that is interesting to you and then let that character go up against the total environment of the game. If you come from a single player pc or console mindset this game is going to seem slow and onerous. Coming from a structured MMO it seems vague because unlike other multiplayer games it is skill based not level based. You can max any attribute you like and buy a really expensive ship and still get yer butt blown sky high by a 3 month old character because you don't really know how use your assets.
Your character and its relationship to other player characters is the content and you have to write your own story. How can that be boring?

Edited by: Zartanic on 19/01/2010 06:03:42 I'm repeating what others have said but as a mainly solo player I still have fun out of the game. The first time I played a few years ago I stopped as I also misunderstood what the game was about and how to get fun from it.
This time from day one I set a series of goals and follow them.
a. Learn PVP to average competence b. Set up a POS in wormhole space c. Become competent and self sufficient in trading d. Become profitable in Invention
Please note I have deliberately ignored the specific need to fly certain ships or have certain skills trained, although they may be a side effect of my goals.
I also have a golden rule that if I find something boring, like mining, NEVER do it.
Other games give you a clear set of goals, EVE does not. Once you have those goals you will find EVE a lot more flexible and fun as you never feel like you are forced to do anything you do not want to.
As you achieve your goals others will become apparent.
If you get into a Corp that will open the game up even more. I've added another goal recently to control a part of nul sec in known space. That will require a lot of effort and probably hiring mercs. It may not be possible which is what I like. I've always enjoyed trying the so called impossible in games (even WOW) but normally I do it eventually. There is a lot to do in this game but its not always easy to see what that is or know if its fun.
Even if a goal seems silly or not achievable its the journey to it that gets you the game you want. Even if you fall flat on your face that all fun too in its own way, at least you tried and you will learn from it.
So stop thinking small time and being a wimp, think big and go for it.

I dont know, am I missing something? Is there more to EVE that Im just not aware of? And if there is more shouldnt it be a little easier to find out about?
Are you missing something? Most definitely YES! You are missing something. Social interaction.
Probably the worst way to play EvE is to fly solo and always sticking to high sec (which is exactly what your post sounds like). EvE is not a spectator sport. EvE was never intended to be played solo and forever in the safety of high sec. It's possible yes, but there's little to no fun that way.
You need to join a 0.0 corp/alliance. Get out there and start participating in heavy PvP fights. Hell, join a mining corp/alliance if that's what you're into, so long as you're with friends.
75% of the entertainment in EvE comes from social interaction with other players. By not being social, you're robbing yourself of a fundamental aspect in this game.
You'll never get anywhere if you don't take that first step out the front door. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

I found that finding PvP opponents is somewhat dependent on the time zone you are in. I live in Germany (GMT+1, the EVE clock is almost RL clock to me) and when I log on during the day (if I'm not working for some reason) low- and null-sec are almost empty except for the occasional macro hauler. It slowly starts filling in the evening hours and when I almost asleep on the keyboard the action really starts. That was most obvious during my time in FW - most interesting actions started sometime around 1am for me, and even if I was awake then I could barely focus.
Of course it's also a matter of pilot count - most players seem to come from the US time zones and having high numbers also means a higher proportion of pilots (in relation to solar systems) will be looking for PvP.
So maybe try to change when you are online.
Or, as others have said, look for a corporation with many members during your game time - or of you're not interested in a corp at least make a few friends and hang in a channel with them. Solo play is nice but only gets you so far - this is a MMO for a reason :)
But in the end it's still a game. If it's not fun for you, find something else :)

There is no instant gratification in Eve.
You want to do something in particular in this game? (pvp, in your case) Then you will have to make EFFORTS. Also, Eve is a bit like real life, you need contacts to succeed.
Maybe Eve is just not the game for you? There's nothing wrong about that, really.
Remember those 2 sentences: - Pvp won't come to you, you have to go get it. - There is more hunting in PvP than killing. The killing part is just the icing on the cake.

Find Hulks with 2-3 month old pilots. If it is a 'main' char, losing a Hulk at that age is a crippling blow, they probably saved for weeks to buy it. After you kill them, address book them, see if they log in, and if they do somehow scr.ape together the ISK for another Hulk, track them down and blow them up again.
They usually give up after that, and go back to WOW.
yeah, how funny that would be..... looks like you are the type of guy, nobody wanted to play with since pre-school. sadly ccp supports this sadistic play style with current game mechanics (suicide insurance). hope this will change soon, wasn`t ultima online affected by the same desease, where a good portion of the player base was just hindering others from enjoying the game, driving them to quit.

So I got my toon somewhat leveled up skill point-wise. Can fly battleships. So what am I supposed to do? I dont want to mine, I dont want to run anymore missions. What else is there? I tried FW briefly and found it the most boring form of PVP ever. I took me many nights before I even had a chance to shoot at someone. Im sorry but thats not good game design if youre going to have PVP in a game. If someone wants to PVP they should be able to get into it immediately, not flying around endlessly looking for something to shoot then you do finally see something youre "allowed" to shoot at without taking a security hit but hes 200km out flying at 2000 whatever so you have no chance of getting him.
I dont get it. What are you supposed to do in this game?
I thought I might try running some DEDs, problem is 90% of them are lvl 1-2. And most of the lvl 2 ones in my region are rogue drone which only drop materials and dont carry bounties. The closest one of interest a lvl 4 was 12 jumps away. I dont want to spend 30 minutes hoping gates, thats bad game design.
I dont know, am I missing something? Is there more to EVE that Im just not aware of? And if there is more shouldnt it be a little easier to find out about?

OP: are you still here?
If you're planning on leaving anyway, I suggest you abandon your current Corp and join the "Red vs Blue" player-managed PvP initiative. There are threads in both the Rookie Q&A and EvE Discussion forums explaining it.
As you've noticed, "EvE-PvP" is very unusual compared to other MMO's. It's not rookie-friendly (unless you enjoy being ganked). And definitely not for everybody.
Red vs Blue turns that around: very low barriers to entry; balanced fights; easy and quick to find fights; lots of fights; low ISK cost (mostly cheap frigates and cruisers).
The skill (SP) requirements are low enough that even a 5-million SP rookie might consider making, training, and stabilizing an alt just for Red vs Blue.
And for today's amusement: count the proportion of the foolish/rude replies in this thread that clearly came from people who can't read (like the ones telling you to join a Corp).
