I have a new MacBook Pro and when I run Eve, programs such as Safari and iTunes run extremely slow and sluggish. This did not happen using Eve on a PC. Is there something I can do such as turning down the graphics in order to be able to run Eve and other programs at the same time?

I've had exactly the same issue. I'm running an a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM, and Activity Monitor shows my system to be using at most 50% CPU and a fraction of total RAM. Ideally I was wanting to be able to run 2 clients windowed simultaneously, on different Spaces for fast switching, and the option of looking at webpages etc. As the OP says, I also have issues with other applications running quite slowly.

Edited by: Denuo Secus on 13/01/2010 22:21:17 Same problem here. Mac Pro with 6GB ram - only a small amount of it is in use.
When EVE runs my whole desktop becomes very very laggy. When I - for instance - try to type a message in Skype, the letters appear after several seconds in the text input field of Skype. Same with Safari or any other program.
Curious detail: when I activate Spaces it becomes faster a short moment. Said text input delay for instance. The entered text appears instantly in the Skype window after activating Spaces.
Also I got the impression the desktop lag gets worser as longer EVE runs.
EVE itself runs smoothly. Actually better since Dominion! But everything outside is not usable. My plan was to use 2 clients for 2 accounts. But even starting a second client is a pain :S
I really appreciate every hint which could solve the problem!

Exactly the same for me, and I am on a QUAD CORE iMac with 4Gb RAM. But as CCP are aware of this and the caps lock issue on Macs, and don't seem to willing to resolve either, I wont be holding my breath!!

Did you file a bug report? the more bug reports the faster they can find the issue.

Known issue. Been around a long time. I think if they could fix it, they already would have.
Work Around: Open the Map browser before you Cmd-Tab back to the desktop.
I've mapped my map to Option Cmd Z so I can do it quickly.

Yup, I get this problem too. Quadcore, using less than a quarter of the available processorpower and I can't have a fullscreen windowed EvE going on in the background at the same time I watch a movie in VLC for example.
Another amusing tidbit I found was that if EvE is running in a window, but the window is entirely concealed by say, a Safari window, my videocard's fan spins faster. But if I move the EvE window a bit so it is partially visible in the background, the fan does not spin up.

I have this same problem however it's important to point out, it didn't used to be this way. I cannot remember exactly, I think it might have been the apocrypha expansion, but I never experienced this problem prior to then.

It happens here frequently. Goes away then comes back. There are day's it doesn't happen at all then there are days it's there all the time. A system reboot seems to help.

CCP can not fix this as it is at the Cedga/Cider level, this is something to bring up with transgaming.
Remember that EvE-O is written to be the slave of MS supporting only Direct X, and as proven time and time again those flaky damn windows based servers ...
At any rate to solve the lag caused by these apps you need to look to transgaming as it's tje DX -> OpenGL that is causing the lag.
Though I doubt this can be fixed ... *sigh* ...
Runing a MBP 4GB ram here myself ... on a side note anyone tried runnign 8GB of ram on a MBP under snow leopard yet? As I walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I did fear no evil, as I carried a big stick, and was the meanest mofo in the valley |

what setting do you guys have set for "PRESENT INTERVAL" in the DISPLAY & GRAPHICS tab ?
if it's not "Interval immediate" try that setting if it changes anything.

I imagine that would lower performance outside of EVE even more, since it increases the required calculations during any given timeframe... but that's just the impression I've gotten. CCP recommends using the default (or Interval One which I believe is the same). Immediate also makes your videocard run hotter.

So if this ISSUE is laggy/choppy performance of other applications when EVE is MINIMIZED...Have any of you tried the WORKAROUND that I posted?
I play EvE on 2 Macs and this fixes the issue, and everyone I've worked with personally says this works for them too. It's not ideal, but a hell of a lot better than grasping a straws like preset interval settings.

Same here, basically running EVE on a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 MacBookPro with Mac OS X Version 10.6.2 and the only reason why I don't play EVE on Mac but rather the Windows side is because of the very sluggish "cmd +tab" desktop.
It's quite disappointing really. I have windows only for EVE, and when alt-tabbed on the windows side I can have itunes, web browser, eft, evemon all open at the same time without any lag whatsoever.
Other than that I've tried the Workaround and it doesn't seem to change anything.
Makes me a bit sad, but w/e I'm over it lol.
Though if someone has a suggestion on how to fix it (windows is going off my mac). :)

Well some of you might or might not like it but running the game with wine (last ofc) seems to have no problem . Personally I d like transgaming/cider to fix this as it's the wrapper's problem at base . So much for the official support. I recenly got a MBP 15" and the only thing i was disappointed was that the client has a bad wrapper. Remind me of those linux days If u are mul****king as i need to then either bug report them all the time or temporarily use win --------------------------- My Signature!!!! |

I had the same issue on a MacPro rev 1 (dual Bipro 2.66Ghz, 5GB RAM, and 7300GT), after a cmd-tab, everything was damn slow with still 2GB RAM free and each processors only at 25%/50%.
I tried the workaround proposed by Dark Lord, and it works like a charm ! If it doesn't solve your problem, just check that your map view is currently in Solar System mode (not on universe mode).

Agreed on the first point, but we aren't TransGaming's customers. CCP is, and it's their duty to address these issues with them, not us.

I have the same problems, although not before Dominion. I am very sure that CCP would fix this if they could. My problem is that EVE re-sets itself maybe 5 times in a night, where i have to go through the motions of setting up EVE all over again. This gets quite frustrating and annoying. Have any of you ever had problems like this? This has been happening since the last patch. Should i be trying to run this through boot camp instead?
My Mac is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of memory. it's a macbook Pro 3.1

Yes. I'm running eve on a 8Gb MBP on Snow Leopard 64bit. It works (in both 32bit and 64bit) but the same sluggishness occurs. Usually I'm at about 60% ram utilization and 50-60% cpu utilization when the eve client is running.

"CCP can not fix this as it is at the Cedga/Cider level, this is something to bring up with transgaming."
No offense, but having voluntarily chosen to base their Mac client on the whole wine/cedga/cider mess, CCP is responsible for the poor quality of the end result. They are, after all, free to write an actual Mac app should they choose to.
