Edited by: Thor Darkwing on 06/01/2010 14:56:35 So just noticed that the Orca can't equip strip miners, so dropped the mining foreman training i had left...
Here's the deal... - I want to play solo - I want something i can relax while I'm doing, EVE to me is something you do while streaming some series on the laptop, or when you just want to kick back. (I'll all get the action i need from other games) - I'm sick of agent missions - (edit) forgot to add, I'm a HARDCORE carebear
started playing eve about some months after it was released, then kept at it for some years, but the last couple of years I've just activated the account for a month or two now and then. At my most active time in eve there where an average of 10k players online at the busy hours, back then you could mine in 0.2 without seeing a "player-pirate" for days, you could do missions in <0.5, you could sneak out to 0.0, you could get blown up by Zombie in Yulai (lol).
so what happens now days, i start up the mining barge to do some realxing mining in a 0.8(if i remember correctly) ... after 5min theres some a** stealing the ore from my can, and I, naive as I am, think "hay kill right! so i launch my drones thinking i can get a free kill or at least scare him of, and if he fires back concord will pwn him" ...no, he kills my drones then me. conclution: You can't mine solo anymore unless you're prepared to dock for each filled cargo hold
some days later i decide to try how the probes work... stupid mistake by my part and I'm in a 0.4 system without noticing it (yaya i know) less then 2min after i launched the probes and is staring at the map.. *boom* conclution: you can't be in lower then 0.5 unless you're in a gang, just running between stargates or if you're extremely skilled as a PvPer
sneak out in 0.0 to have a peak... conclution: No
So! what's left to do? -just got my transportship skill up and can use covert ops devices.. possible to do some semi-risky deliverys? but is there any profit in that at all? and i take it even with a prowler you won't manage to sneak into 0.0?
- Buy the freighter skill and get a Fenrir for some lazy but HUGE hauls?
wish i could carebear mine again

There are quite a few basically deserted highsec systems you could probably afk mine in to your hearts content. They may not have stations in them, and they could be quite a few jumps to the nearest tradehub, but they're there. _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

just fit some cargo expanders and cargo rigs to your coveter/hulk and be done with it you will last a long longer mining. Screw the mining upgrades.

So fly a cargo expanded covetor, insure it, fit T1. Everyone else is
But in all seriousness, there is plenty of PvE and PvP activity you can do solo. Gank people's wallets on the market. Become a t2 producer. Gank miners. Try to become a trillionare and hire people to camp some random guy in a station.
The possibilities are endless. Eve is a sandbox, if all you're finding is cat turds -- well, the only fault is yours. And in summary, bigger blobs are the answer. Now what was the question? |

I'll bite.
You don't seem to have experienced much of the game in all your years playing.
To think that a character of your age is so clueless seems a little wrong to me.
Personally I suspect you've bought the character, since you seem to know zero about game mechanics.
First things first. It's eve, everyone and their grandma has an alt. GET ONE!. Hey, suddenly, you can play 'solo' while not being alone. This helps with hauling your ore before someone can flip it (common ****ing sense if you ask me) or bringing out a combat ship to mess up the flipper, or scouting yourself through losec.
Next, probe ships fit cloaks for a reason. Last thing you need to worry about while probing out some site or anomaly is somebody coming to gank you. Again, use common sense, it goes like this: Drop probes, align out of ecliptic, mwd, cloak. Bam, you're 'safe'.
Traveling (and even fighting) in lowsec solo is ENTIRELY possible. Not knowing the means to do so doesn't mean it is impossible. Learn to use the directional scanner, watch local (this is a hard one for most carebears) watch local, watch your directional scanner, watch local, watch your directional scanner, watch local, and then watch your directional scanner. Get the point? Paranoia pays.
I'm not even going to address the orca thing, except to say it's an "Industrial Command Ship" not "Super-mega-awesome-funtime Mining Barge". Figure it out.
As far as sneaking out to 0.0 not being an option? Grow some damn balls. You say you can use a covops cloak, so get a covops, stick a freakin mwd on it and get out there. Trial by fire is the best way, since no matter how many tip or hints people give you, you're still a carebear until you've successfully mwd-cloaked out of a bubble filled with interceptors and drones.
There are major profits to be had. Follow these steps.
1. Locate system/constellation/region where lots of fighting occurs 2. Find high-margin or high-volume markets (drones/ammo tend to be high volume while in some parts, tackle gear and ships can be high-margin) 3. Get that new blockade runner of yours and your new alt (in a covops as well) and make the trip from the nearest trade hub to the danger zone. 4. Profit?
Whatever you do, don't move any amount of goods through lowsec/0.0 without a scout. It could be clear for months, and the one time you don't decide to scout, boom, smartbomb bubble camp.
If you're looking for something relaxing, perhaps a freighter or another game is what you're looking for. Personally I wouldn't use the term 'relaxing' so much as 'mind-numbingly dull' for things like mining or warping a freighter through hisec. If you really want to find interest in the game again, it will be in the things you HAVEN'T done.
The things that get your blood pumping, like hauling through dangerous territory or (god forbid I touch this one with a ten-foot pole) PVP.
Most of eve exists out of hisec, with opportunities just waiting....it's up to you to grow some balls and dive in.

Can I have it(*) pretty please?
Also, get at least a cov ops for scanning and cloak up while doing it.. no one can probe out a cloaked ship. If you're after combat sites, get a force recon.. they can fight and warp cloaked.. don't uncloak when local is full of people you have no clue about..
(*) your stuff

Edited by: Ker Vicodus on 06/01/2010 15:32:17 I really suggest that you join some sort of mining corp. I know you want to play solo, and whether this is a desire to be alone or your casual play schedule, I promise you that this game is only fun if you play it socially.
A mining corp will lend several things to your play experience:
1) People to chat with...about mining! Hey, if youre passionate about it, then talking about it with corpmates will make you feel more involved.
2) A sense of purpose...their mining ops will give you something to do other than simply mining minerals ad nauseum. Well...youll still be doing that I suppose. But in a directional way for a greater purpose.
3) Security...There is security in numbers. In Eve, its pretty easy to get picked off if youre just one person.
Listen, I know your question is specifically what a solo player can do. I hear that, I play solo a lot. But Mission running and even mining or exploration or whatever gets really boring if you dont have some people to hang with while you do so.
You dont actually HAVE to run ops with your corp even. But just mining in the same area can be a social thing.
Your point was that you play eve to relax. So if you really cant find any relaxation in the improved security and sense of purpose that a corp gives you, I suggest that you find one of those nearly deserted hisec places that a previous poster was talking about, and get really acquainted with Eve Radio.
The chat channel there is a good time too.

My apologies upfront but i am grumpy reading the same eve is boring, eve sux etc. over and over again.
I've run (com)plexes in lowsec. with 1-2 peeps. No one around.
I scanned in 0.0 and did a few complexes. Usually no one around.
You say you wanne be solo. Your choice. But you cut your self off from a big part of the game, you are not playing. Mining is not relaxed, gimme a break! Its beyond boring and tedious.
You say you are' playing the game', while streaming some series on the laptop. You are, not, playing, THE, game. Period. You are watching some series while afk doing some non interesting tasks in a virtual world called 'EVE online', which happens to be an MMO.
Why don't you stop kidding your self and give up. Safe that monthly money for some cancer sticks or liver damaging alcohol?
Get out! ---> that way.

Perhaps then, EVE is not totally a game for you?
If you want fun out of EVE, I suggest trying PVP out.
If you want some easy activity, play the market. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. First of, I'm tempted to not even answer you for the insult of buying an account, but since you took the time... and if you didn't notice i pointed out that i haven't played the game actively for some years. so YES I don't have a freaking clue how EVE works now days. last time i spend time reading up on things was somewhere mid exodus patch. from cold war -> dominion I've probably only had the acc active like 4-5 months in total, that time mainly doing the usual agentruns for 5days before getting bored again.
2. I don't want to have to log in and out to haul ore, besides, that takes about as much time as warp back, dock get the hauler out yourself. and I'm definitely NOT going to spend money on a 2nd acc.
3. once again, like I said about the probeattempt, "my stupid mistake, jsut undocked and tried it out, never thinking of what system i was in (perhaps because that was the first time online in a year or so. but i do know the basic princeps of being careful ,I'm just to lazy.
4. Yes, I did figure it out(like the first lines in my post) (about the orca)
5. I've been half thinking of fitting out some covert ops ship and try to run a blockade out to 0.0, but jsut need the balls for it first. and ont sure what i could do out there.. hunt rats..meh.. and miss on some other blockade on the way back to highsec.
I'm sorry for not being clear enough about me wanting eve as a "lay back with your feet on the desk and listen to some audiobook while mining"-game like it was before. I do get there's a world of opportunities in lowsec and that you can get far by joining a bigger corp. but that's not what I'm looking for.
Anyway, I'll just freeze the account again I guess, not much fun left for non PvPers apparently. and I had totally forgotten how rude the EVE forums where
Thanks for taking your time to try and help those who did =)

Playing solo in an MMO, I know some frown on it but it really is quite common. Some people just want to be left alone to play and not be bothered by others.
Thor Darkwing, here are some things I hope can help:
1. Scout, pure and simple. Take a ship and travel about and hunt for less occupied systems with belts to mine that have station access. If your going to jet-can mine in a field you MUST be able to at least keep track of people coming in and out of Local. If somebody looks suspicious then quickly get your hauler and at least get your cans. 2. Scan sites, find a belt and mine it. You are not as exposed, however NOT completely safe. 3. Don't like missions? Some of those missions have some nice fields, again, not as exposed. 4. Get enough cash to establish multiple mining outposts then if one of your "gold mines" gets to risky just JC to another outpost. If the risk to a site never subsides then find a new home and move.
While the above should help I do want to put a cautionary warning, THIS IS MIND NUMBINGLY BORING. So I suggest getting the entire box set of a TV show that you are interested in and get to work!

Get more accounts... 2 hulks and a orca, now that's a mining operation right there. Can't be arsed to train for it, but done like that I could imagine mining would be relatively interesting and pretty risk free.

ya, that's sort of what I'm doing :) and that's another reason I don't want a big restart on a game that'll tie me up with countless hours of dedicated gaming every day. Already spent to much time on different mmos these last couple of years.
But I still need something to do while RL doesn't offer anything fun on random slow evening, so was hoping that eve could offer something "new".

If you want a good, rather relaxing method of playing then look into trading. All you have to do is place buy orders, maybe move the items to a trade hub then sell and make profit. Made a couple hundred million in a month from implants alone. It's easy and can make you filthy rich if you know how to do it right.

I often solo mine in a hulk. I use cargo expanders instead of MLUs.
Yes, having to dock a few times an hour cuts into your mining efficiency, but considering we're talking about something you can do while chatting with friends and family (or even doing housework) I really don't see efficiency as an issue.

1. If you can afford it plex a new character to haul for you if mining. And use as base of operations in 0.0 to once again haul for you while you do the complexes.
2. A T2 transport(prowler, viator) can get through any 0.0 camp. If not through the bubble then at least back to the gate. Decloak, hit cloak, hit mwd 2 sec later, do a dogleg.
3. Run my lucrative courier contracts to blood raider stations (0.0) reward 10m collateral 8m
4. Go live in a class 1-2 wormhole, mine the grav sites in an adjacent class 4 or better. Usually very quiet.
5. Get a bomber with bomb deployment and sit on 0.0 pipes bombing gate camps randomly. Can take a few hours for pirates to set up cuz they're quite useless at it. Only panic will kill you.
6. High Sec pos do research, inventions, manufacture or in the class 1-2 for that matter.
7. Do pirate missions....same garbage as in empire though, except u can die when u undock from the 0.0 station.
8. Market PVP
9. Get A freighter and haul things in empire
10. Ship goods to 0.0 NPC stations and sell at markup, buy local rat loot and minerals. Yes you have to get the good there first.
