Full voice-overs worked in Mass Effect because the characters in Mass Effect didn't just talk, they communicated. The game had animated body language and facial expressions to properly immerse the player in a realistic situation.
On the other hand, adding voice-overs to still heads or lazily-synchronized mouths moving with speech on an otherwise still face does nothing for me. I know it's all the rage right now to voice over every piece of text in a game, but I find it more like someone reading over my shoulder veeeeerrrrryyyy slooooooowwwwwwllly while I try to read a book at my own pace. It's annoying as hell. _ |

Edited by: Kessiaan on 29/12/2009 07:03:18 I dunno. It doesn't seem like a good use of dev money to me. Unlike most other MMOs the in-game NPCs in EvE are mostly irrelevant.
I can't think of any other MMO where I can log in on day one and just totally ignore the NPCs forever and not only do fine, but not even miss anything important.
The strength of this game lies in its depth of player interaction, and I can't see this changing anytime ever without completely breaking the sandbox aspect of the game that is its biggest selling point. To that end I don't think voicing the NPCs, except maybe more lines for Aura, is a good use of money.

Hell, i've got the sound turned off as it is.
Immersion isn't about sound or pictures but its about real game goals and a sense of place , responsibilty progress, etc. The apex of immersion to me is when you have a persistent world in which you can become an active part of its functioning, and shape the fabric of the space which other players interact.
We have that here in many sectors of the economy and also in 0.0 space holding, and other sorts of territorial and/or posturing warfare.
I'll say also, that one of mys most immersive mmporg experiences was with a text mud that had similar options open to players.

Waste of time. CCP already said they wouldn't add anything in Incarna that would require current mechanics to leave your ship and go run around a station, i.e. market interaction or agents. You wanna talk to NPC's, go talk to people who initiate minigames or let you play space lush/perv in a station bar so you can get e-wasted or see NPC's dance for your ISK-wasting pleasure.
Oh, and have fun with all the naked losers running in circles in their skivvies spamming their jump buttons(or running in circles *****ing CCP should add a jump button)interspersed with random emotes. The rest of us will be playing EVE.

To do EVE justice they would need a LOT of voice over work done. Anything less would just bug me.

I haven't even turned on EVE sound for over a year, voices would mean nothing to me. I much prefer to listen to podcasts and internet radio stations while running missions, and when I'm out for some pvp I'm generally on vent so eve sound is off anyway.

It's not for EVE. For example Bioware games are strong in story and voice acting is cool. In AoC the first island was kinda with voice acting. However in EVE you would get irritated, because of repetitiveness.

Considering every patch, the sound that's currently in the game gets more and more broken (Recent death, the Jukebox. I miss not having to manually select a song everytime one finishes ), making the Agents talk would turn out absolutely horrible. Hell, it'd probably be broken as all hell the following patch anyways, that seems to be the EVE Sound trend.

I don't think voice actors reading mission dialogue is really necessary, as it just would get skippable quite quickly (as it probably will in KOTOR-online or whatever they're calling it). Important mission information and your standard incarna NPC greeting is fine, but i think there are better things to spend time and money on regardless _____________________ Horrors! let them fix overall sound first. After that is done, they can implement every feature they like.

God no. Don't let CCP do anything to do with sound (if it's not fixing the sound we have)! Thank you.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

I really don't think it'd fit EVE as it is today.
Imagine having to record the same mission text male and female or even in different accents for the different factions and doing that for each mission (at least for the missions that are common to multiple factions).
As it is, agents are just pictures, and I really don't think full voice acting is appropriate for static pictures.
If you can interact with NPCs in Incarna, then voice acting would definitely be good. But for the static pictures that hand out missions that we have today, I think it'd be a waste of resource and would actually hurt immersion more than help it, IMO.
As mentioned before, NPCs talking to you during missions would be suitable for voice acting, but not mission text.

You expect players to turn sound back on just for this? Unlikely :)

There isn't anything wrong with the Jukebox for me or anyone I know. You may have an issue specific to your sound card, although it rather sounds like something in your install is corrupted. Perhaps run the repair tool in the CCP folder.

Interesting considering it's a well known and widespread issue that they've been aware of since Dominion release.
It's nobody's install, it's the damn client being borked. But head on over to issues and workarounds if you're confident that your sound is working perfectly because hundreds of players would love to know exactly what hardware you use.

Depends which NPCs we're talking about here. More combat chatter, traffic control noise near gates and stations, good old Jack Burton:esque CB rants betweens convoys… sure. That brings some life to the universe everyone lives in.
Adding VO to agents' presentations for a bazillion combinations of races, genders and missions, which only some will listen to and which even they will skip over after they first listen anyway… nah, waste of time and HD space. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I am totally for voice interaction as i have said in other threads too. The immersion in Eve Online is kinda sad - there is none. Also, the way NPCs interact should be totally random. Every corporation/faction should have at least 20 different phrases which they say. Some for welcoming the player and others for simple taunts. I thin freelancer did a good joy on this where there were about 10 different voices for the different stations: "Docking commision granted. Please enter dock 3" and so on. That was cool.
