Everyone who has logged into eve recently gets presented with the message regarding large fleet fights, this is obviously causing a problem with performance.
The question is, what is the solution?
I've heard talk CCP is trying to implement some kind of dynamic resource allocation to spread the load over the cluster.
Has VMware not been considered?
With VMware DRS, it you could have 20 nodes sat on one server doing nothing. When 500 ppl show up on one of the nodes, the instance is immediately transferred automatically onto its own ESX server to run happily on its own, ala Jita.
It would also make things much more scalable. If 100,000 people suddenly sign up to eve, all you do is buy a load more ESX servers and join them to the cluster.
At the moment it seems the resource allocation is manual. You have to let CCP know and then they will allocate the system its own node.
Flame away....

yes, they never heard of Clustering over there at CCP...
In fact CCP already stated that due to Code it isnt possible (yet) to span a node over more than one processor, so no Clustering (be it Hardware or Software or the mixture) for you.
On a sidenote, plenty of Posts and also some Dev Blogs to that matter.

Throw performance down the well, so my blob fights can be free! We must make servers faster, then we have a big party!

CCP have said that in the new hardware they acquired it was simply clock speeds they worried about since that was all the performance boosts they got from newer hardware. They were unfortunately unable to use multiple cores for computations. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

I'm sure the experts at CCP know exactly what they're doing. No need for us regular folk to trouble our simple minds with this stuff.

I hope and assume that is a very old quote? Hasn't it been many years that Intel has been clear that processor speed was not the goal, rather it was more dies, more cores, better hyperthreading. I recall a long time ago you could get pentiums, especially Extreme Editions, that would run well over 3 GHz. So the top of the line processor from several years ago has a clock speed that was nearly as fast or faster than the current top I7. Hasn't it been quite a while since clock speed, or even single thread performance, was what they should have been relying upon? |
