Nah this is my first MMO, Although to question a few of you intent on making me out to be a noob.
If you cannot make a game run online properly you should do a few vital things.
Dont market it until it runs perfectly. What exactly is EVEs uptime percentage over a 1 month period? Certainly not above 90%
Dont disappoint customers.
All these big announcements about a new patch to make the game better in so many ways, when in reality a patch seems to absolutely shatter the game for some time afterwards.
You guys seem to actually enjoy downtime? You don't seem to have any thoughts to yourself as a customer. I find it quite odd how you guys don't mind something breaking which in 1 way or another you pay for.
There isnt even a decent post from a CCP admin regarding what is actually happening and the reason behind the DT.
It seems CCP is not at all in any way shape or form customer focused. They seem quite happy letting people down without an apology.

You are making the assumption that's its CCP's fault? What about Microsoft and the many many bugs not only in the SQL Layer but the O/S? I presume we are running VMWare so there is another finger to point at.
i agree completly , so then like i asked , does anyone get fired for using microsofts sql , instead of using MySql like any real programer would after having so many issues with it ?

I would guess they use Microsoft over an Open Source DB for the backup of MS Tech Support engineers - At the end of the day this is only a game, if you live in the UK your NHS patient details will be running on a huge Microsoft SQL DB

You'd rather CCP was apologising to you than fixing the issue? I've heard of dumb, but you take the cake. They've said there's an issue, they've said they're working on it. Once it's fixed they'll take the time to tell you what happened and say sorry - that's what customer service is actually about you ******. They're fixing the problem rather than pandering to your overblown ego by issuing a premature apology which wastes resources which could be spent fixing the problem.
GTFO; drop your stuff at the door on the way.

You can never say 'dont market it until it runs perfectly', this happens with every game not just MMO's, when one is released the game will be buggy and have all sorts of problems, its only from feedback from users that it gets fixed (which is what singularity is for) and the only reason the game then goes on to have little to no bugs is because it doesnt release new content every 6 months or so like eve, so there are going to be buggy periods
You guys make squeeky noises when you pop, and that's enough motivation as far as I'm concerned. |

No Company marketing an online game says its online 100% of the time if they do they will have small print where they say to expect downtime due to maintenance and updates. It fact all the MMO's have a daily downtime just not all MMO's use it. Large updates do cause lots of problems in fact I remember quite a few wow patches and city of hero patches causing days/weeks of trouble. Yes this SQL Issue is starting to cause alot of downtime and alot of people are getting fed up with it (me included) but they are working on it they are keeping us informed and they have been for years giving us free content updates and expansions which is something quite rare.

Some of us appreciate that an MMO server is so insanely complex, that problems are inevitable. We pay for a massive game universe with non-consensual pvp. The vast majority of the time we get just that.
You see rather than criticize CCP for doing their best to bring us our game back, we would rather grief players just like you who dont have a clue, and EVE is one of the only games that allows us to do this.

Downtime is when most of the players get to eat, shower, and catch a nap to be ready for the next 23 hours when they will be online.

eve is definitely up over 90% of the time. yes, sometimes it sucks that the few times it is down you are coincidentally on. oh well, you got a month to make that 300 mil and surely if you are qualified to complain about the game not delivering properly then 300 mil will NOT take a whole month. Most MMO's have MORE downtime then eve. MMO's that have no players or do not provide more goodies every once in a while usually still have just as much problems. unless you are talking about a mmo with 2d graphics that has you mindlessly clicking the same place over and over then says congrats you are lvl infinity.

Actually, I would say over the 6 years Ive been playing EVE, uptime is well over 90% as a percentage. Yes, there are issues at the moment, there always are after a big patch deployment. It will smooth out soon and be back to the usual 25-40 minute daily dt and no other issues.
And as far as being customer focused, CCP is by FAR the most customer focused MMO company I have encountered. Since Ive played most of the major MMO's in the last 10 years, I think Ive got some basis for comparison. Post with your main! |

I'd say the 15-30 min daily downtimes and occasional reboot falls well above 90%. To lose 10% of a month in downtime would be about 72 hours per month or 2.4 hours per day. Surely you exaggerate if you think it's down that much. <stuff> They know it's the SQL server and are working the issue. I'd be more annoyed if they had minute by minute twitter updates rather than focusing on the problem. <stuff> What exactly do you want them to apologize for when they don't know what the problem is yet?

Real programmers wouldn't touch MySql. It's for crappy web developers. Sure, it does small fast transactions, but it craps out under real DBA work. Personally, I'm still a fan of Oracle, with postgresql a quick second.

1. You don't know jack about software development if you expect it to be bug-free at all, let alone before release.
2. You don't know jack about support if you expect a detailed explanation before it's fixed. Usually the techs don't know the full extent of the problem until they fix it all, the exceptions to this being fun things like drive failures.

Ahhh. End User Licence Agreements. The laughing stock of the legal trade, boilerplates of text in all but name and of dubious enforcability depending on where your product both originated and is being sold.
Yet people and business hold on to them as if it gives them legal imunity and "someone to sue" when it all goes wrong. You should read it sometimes, most contain the phrase "not of merchentable quality" somewhere in them. So your paying for something that by its own admitance is broken and not in a fit state to work.
Even if it did constitute a legally binding contract between two or more parties (which CCP would like it too), the fact that the game has no age checker built in to it puts CCP in dubious legal areas when you get a minor agreeing to it (age of conesnt, which differs around the world) and the fines, In loco parentis acusations and such come out the woodwork it all goes a bit bonkers. Slapping Teen ratings and such on the front doesn't mitigate that either; if its a contract and a minor agrees you've a problem. If it's not then it's jost so much wall of text and can be utterly ignored.
And yes, I did point out to a GM a long time ago that if anyone in the UK under 18 plays EVE it's bad news for CCP if someone gets the hump. He went rather quiet when someone admitted they were 14... opps.
And whilst CCP are heading deep in to Oracle territory with the sheer quantity of data being pushed around the TQ cluster. They aren't about to change it for a number of reasons. Oracle DBA's cost a fortune for one that knows what he/she's doing, Microsoft are one of CCP's main technology partners and that means steep discounts on licenses. And finally, the devs probably know what MS-SQL is supposed to do... even if it doesn't always do it.
