I've been away for a while and I'm wondering how they have progressed if at all.
How are the Amarr for PVP these days?

They had a short renaissance between the speed nerf in Quantum Rise and the projectile boost in Apocrypha.
After than that, there were some fleet compositions such as Zealot Ahac gangs and Hellcats (dual TC Pulse Abaddons) that relied on Guardian supported armor gangs, but except that and some subcap niche ships or archons, they're completely overshadowed by Minmatar Supremacy just like anything else.

Still very good for armour based fleet comps in lowsec. |

Now, I would like to come back slow and re-learn the ropes so to speak so I was thinking I would concentrate on sub-bs piloting.

All AF's got buffed an the Retribution is below average. The Vengeance however, is above average. The Malediction can be flown as a fleet interceptor or a combat interceptor but most interceptors outside of their fleet intercepting role have become less viable do to faction frigs, AF's and buffed T1 frigs. The Punisher has been buffed and you actually want lasers on it.
Arbitrator, Pilgrim, Curse are still the same but since Canes and Drakes are everywhere, their engagement envelope has slimmed. Harbinger is (still) a very solid BC. While it used to be the 3rd best BC, the new tier3 BC's are shaking things up greatly and the dust hasn't settled yet. The Absolution, like most command ships, is not competitive compared to the isk efficiency offered by tier2 BC's.
In terms of fleet doctrines, Zealots with an AB+ logi and Abaddons+logi are solid with T3 and tier3 starting to mix things up. The Oracle looks, to me, as a good nano shield BC fleet ship but I don't fly fleets in the depths of space so I wouldn't know. |
