So. I fraps a fight in full resolution. I watch the raw fraps files and they are full size and crystal clear. I use windows movie maker to cut it into a movie of sorts. Render it and the end result is 50% resolution and looks like poo. So I "aquire" a copy of Sony Vega 9.0 and spend the afternoon learning enough to make a new project, with my resolution, and makes a very basic movie. Render it for 40 minutes and watch it. 50% resolution and looks like poo. What am I doing wrong?

Your project and rendering resolution doesn't automatic become the same. Make sure the resolution on the codec you're rendering with is the same as you want it to be.

for movie maker, you need to find a post by osiris occido about how to make your settings work he uses WMM for everything. For vegas i use 8.0 should be relatively unchanged. New project and a window pops up set the template or create your own to the resolution you frapsed at. There's also a width and height put in same resolutions, non-progressive scan, aspect pixel ration 1.0, 29.97 fps. That should set you up fine, my res for example is set to 1680x1050 for my 22" widescreen. The stock settings is prolly something like a dvd movie that appears as a little box in the middle of the larger screen until you stretch it you don't want that. It'll be called NTSC or PAL or something don't use those, create your own at your own resolution.
Hope this helps ------- LTI(new) 9Lives UTS! WB2A!

Thank yoy Halsoy. That was indeed the problem. Any chance anyone could tell me what file extension and codec they use? .avi HD 501i made a file over 20GB large. :P

.mkv H264
Usually, or at least that is my impression, you export it as raw from the editor (since they're usually not that good encoders). I use StaxRip to re-encode to H264 and it is fairly simple to use. Another option is VirtualDubMod but it is a little more advanced (you need to know a wee bit about codecs and the such to use it).

I use a program called Winnydows. The home page http://www.winnydows.com is in Silver Light, so you may/may not use a browser that supports it, attaching a DL link below.
DL Linkage
You may want to tinker about with the settings a bit, but what I've ended up using is:
Format: .mkv
Denoise/Sharpen: Disabled
Brightness/Contrast: Disabled
Video Encoding: Make custom, name it, apply following (under the 'Main' tab, eveything else you may leave unchanged):
- Codec: XviD x264
- Encoding mode: 2-pass Bitrate
- Bitrate: 2400
- AVC profile: High Profile
- AVC level: unrestricted
- Preset: Default
Makes for good quality -lowish size movies. Normally you end up at around 250mb/10 min, or 2.5mb/min using it. All you need is the free space for the lossless render wich can be up in the tens of gigs
