Hi guys,
I have received my new system and want to do things properly from scratch. I am moving from XP to windows 7 and am unfamiliar with it. System is a Corei7 with Win7 64 bits, 6 Gigs RAM, and the new Radeon 5870. I'd like to run three installs of EVE in parallel on three monitors, as I have three accounts.
Some of the questions I have:
- I used to make three different installs on XP to separate configs. Is it still necessary on Win7 ? - Is there anything else specific to do when installing on Win 7 64 bits ? - When there three clients run, will the system properly attach each process to a different core according to the load, or is it necessary to bind each client to a different core manually ? - What is the best configuration to use three screens with the 5870 card ? Do you need to rely on the system, on the GPU configuration tool, or on another tool like evemover or whatever else. - I heard there are issues with the aero snap feature. Does it need to be deactivated ? - What about the problems some people have with GPU temperature and multi clients. Are there configuration changes to make ?
Of course, any pointer to a page explaining EVE config on Win7 would be appreciated.
Thanks for your inputs,

Thanks to take care of my post Applebabe.
Are you sure though that the issues forum is the appropriate one for this post ? I am only asking advices on the best way to install EVE on my new computer, I am not reportingn issues. I fear that by being there I would get much less feedback from people who have indeed a working install on Win7. Would you mind considering moving the thread back to the general forum ?
Thanks for your support,

- I used to make three different installs on XP to separate configs. Is it still necessary on Win7 ? No, you cansimply run a client 3 times - Is there anything else specific to do when installing on Win 7 64 bits ? Nope - When there three clients run, will the system properly attach each process to a different core according to the load, or is it necessary to bind each client to a different core manually ? you will have to assign each to a core - What is the best configuration to use three screens with the 5870 card ? Do you need to rely on the system, on the GPU configuration tool, or on another tool like evemover or whatever else. just use ATI's CCC, window eve for all 3 clients, away you go - I heard there are issues with the aero snap feature. Does it need to be deactivated ? nope, no need, you may gain asingle FPS but its not worth the bothger - What about the problems some people have with GPU temperature and multi clients. Are there configuration changes to make ? if you feel its performing bad, turn off bloom etc
Of course, any pointer to a page explaining EVE config on Win7 would be appreciated.

I still do, it means that each client get's it's own config settings under your user profile and just works better IMHO

No.

Just let Windows deal with it, never had issues with my Q6600 quad core

No idea with ATI cards. No matter what you do, you will be running 3 windowed eve clients set to fill the screen. like you say, evemover.

If you want to have a window moved to fill the screen then yes. Right click on desktop and click personalize then bottom left click ease of access centre. from that list chose 'Make mouse easier to use' then tick the box at the bottom that says 'prevent windows from being......' I have chosen to run my eve clients at just under the full screen size so I can still see the taskbar etc, but that's just me.

Again, 8800GTX... no problems. If you have heat issues get better cooling :-)

No problem :-)

It does but one of the monitors has to be a displayport monitor, or a full dp>dvi adaptor costing about $90
Running 3 on my 5770 at the moment.

If you are worried about the heat issues, leave the "interval default" setting on EVE ( I think it is set by default no as well). This limits your FPS to your monitor refresh rate (60 usualy) and will stop your card from generating excess heat.
There have been reports of people having issues with that setting when running multiple clients though, so you might want to try it on and of and keep an eye on your temp. Anything to about 90 degrees celsius is pretty normal for graphic cards these days. _

90+ celsius is ok for ATI cards. NVidia cards, not so much. If he's got a 5850, I'd expect him to have a decently cooled case. In which case he should most definitely be running with interval immediate. ---

Edited by: Theo SClaw on 13/12/2009 11:13:57 Ok, thanks to those who contributed.
I installed the PC yesterday, worked perfectly, processor and graphic card barely notices when I launch one client, two screens managed through Eve Windowed Mode Helper (tried 2/3 tools an found this is the one that works best on my PC), not a single issue with multi-clients.
I guess I must be lucky, yet I am quite happy :-)
Cheers,
