I was curious as to what might be the effect on ice mining as a viable profession (if it even is currently) after Dominion hits, when a dozen or more POS's are not required per system to hold sov. What are everyone's thoughts?

Ice market is going to crash really hard, I assume. A lot of people give up the profession, then ice goes back up until it's at the original values and people start mining it again.

Two things.
Jump fuel and POS fuel.
Jump fuel might actually increase, because people will be able to fly Super Carriers easier if they really will be 40% cheaper.
POS fuel need drops massively, nobody needs this much POS's. Just a fraction of those moons have good enough moon minerals that they provide profit.
Of course, if the Dominion sov changes are massive success, that will compensate the POS fuel need since smaller corporations aren't building Outposts straight away.
But as first, it will crash. Atleast I can't see any other way around with these changes.

It will take a few weeks for the market to crash as 0.0 alliance swap over. After that I think it will drop hard. But I heard a rumour that highsec ice fields will stop regenerating so once they run out ice will become profitable for 0.0 alliances (if it happens). So If I was you I would mine like hell now and stockpile for a month or two and then sell at a profit

Link to Devblog stating this?? If not then I wouldn't count on it happening.

Apparently a dev made such a comment at tournament event, I think. I've not been able to find the comment or confirmation though.
If anybody can find it or confirm, please share.
EDIT: Found a reference.

Ice fields leaving high sec? Time to dust off my mack fleets! /sarcasmoff
On a related note, if they remove high sec ice macroers will change to mining various high sec minerals nonstop, crashing those prices. World keeps on spinnin'

Edited by: Eliza Dagon on 16/11/2009 18:24:58 So, if this is true (removal of ice fields; yes, I read the above referenced thread) then CCP is basically slapping high-sec tower operators in the face as a result of the change in sov mechanic? Getting rid of mineable high-sec ice will undoubtedly make operating a high sec POS even more expensive. Just another means of CCP forcing people to play the low-sec game rather than the game they want to play themselves? |

Yes, 2006 CCP removed some ice fields, most famous are Kisogo and Jita icefields. But I also recal hearing something on fanfests about new ice removal.
With upcoming sov changes, it would fit perfectly on that line.

So this is something recent, not 2006, and Dominion was specifically mentioned.
I still haven't found confirmation.
If ice fields were removed from hisec, I think it would be a mistake, but I can understand what the reasoning MIGHT be for the move: getting more people out of hisec, and getting more ISK into the hands of people that are gonna have less valuable moons.

IMO the only thing they achieve with that is let the gankers have a ****storm while it will become a huge pain in the ass for high sec pos owners who now mine their ice in high sec to get their fuel.
Prices will go way higher then its now, there isnt a *small* amount of POS's in high sec FYI, maybe even more then in low. My signature was too big so now i'm Koos Sigloos |

I find it hard to believe that CCP would eliminate all ice belts in high-sec. There are simply too many towers in Empire for production, research, etc. Deleting the ice fields in Empire means that tower owners there would be wholly dependent on the supply of isotopes from 0.0.
I suppose that would make for an interesting supply/demand chart :)

I can see them possibly removing some of the more common ice fields in Empire, especially those near trade hubs. The more they reduce the availability of ice, the more work needs to be done.
Null sec mining is really horrible. You can make a mint off things like Dark Glitter, but in the end the availability of ice in null sec depends on the tolerance of the huge alliances out there.
Really, all removal of ice in high sec seems to be little more than fear mongering. If you hear something like this which is critical to all alliances out there, then time code it and provide the link.

if all ice in high sec was removed POS's would DIE Risk vs. Reward is crap. Mackinaws are nothing but targets in low / null sec.
So unless you had a real mining ship for ice, designed for low / null sec. CCP will not do this ever, unless they intend on removing high sec towers, then they better up the labs to infinite in HIGH sec.

What you mean real mining ship for ice? What something that can't be killed? That mines 1000 blocks a minute? And can be done afk like mining ice in highsec?
What it would mean is that the price for you pos fuel would go up and you would have to make a choice on whether it is worth keeping up. It would mean that in 0.0 alliances would do big ice mining ops which would make them isk and replace some of the isk lost to the balancing of moon minerals and help pay for the upkeep of the systems. Some people would take there pos's down and the market would stabilise itself eventually.
CCP will do what they think is best for the game. They have said they want to get people into lowsec and 0.0 this would do that because ice miners will have to go there to get ice.

There are quite a few empty or nearly empty ice systems in lowsec. I used to mine lowsec ice in a mac all the time to fuel my corp's towers. Never lost a ship. Ice fields are so large you can mine 100km from the warp-in.

No matter the outcome there is always a way to profit from change. As for the Eve Online Trader, we are buying all the oxygen isotopes we can afford. Its speculation but to us the risk is worth it!

I have my doubts that this will happen. So far it is only speculations except for one person telling us that some Dev said something. Nobody confirmed so far this statement. But you never know, as CCP also didn't announce the new respawn rate of Asteroids in summer. I at least are stockpiling my ice at the moment and hope to make a good profit if ice is removed from Highsec. Especially that on Dominion launch day I will have my ice refining skills ready

Currently 0.0 dwellers buy ice products in empire and rarely ever mining on own fields unless there's some "OMG STRONT/OZONE MINING CTA!!11" for wars.
So I guess it's more fair other way around, hope it will make 0.0 ice profitable for locals.

I'd settle for something that tanks better. Ideally it would have a battleship-size tank so when it's assaulted, friends have a chance to target the invader and get a point on before the Hulk is popped.

I'd find it odd that CCP went so much at length to ease the moon goo dependency but just to change with ice as the new moon goo-alike cash cow. - Auditing and consulting

Most 0.0 dwellers don't mine at all due to risk/reward and ofc most of them are 100% focused on combat.
