My apologies upfront for asking noobesque questions, but what is the difference between pirates PvP-ing and other players PvP-ing?
In the end it all boils down to 'you got something I want and I'm going to do my best to take it' or 'you are where I don't want you so I try my utmost best to kill you'.
What's the difference?

The difference is that Pirates look extremely stylish and attractive while they're destroying your ship. The rest are just rabble. -- Bellum Eternus Inveniam viam aut faciam.

Hi there, my name is Amanda and I'm the admin assistant for Rancer Defence League.
While I do not often see 'action' myself, due to having my head in ledgers the whole time, my CEO warned me that pirates do not have souls, and that they are much like schoolyard bullies.
"Regular" pvp is between two honourable opponents, just duking it out. Pirating is for sociopaths who lack souls and/or a conscience. Or so I'm told.

Amanda

The real difference is primarily location...
In 0-0 everyone is fair game (subject to alliances / allies etc) whereas in low sec or high sec, shooting people outside of wars is a criminal act in game terms.
Thats about it in many ways.
In practical terms, pirates are generally trying to prey on people going about their business in a non agressive manner.

Its all blowing ships up.
The question is why. For fun? For your allainces benefit? In defence? In war?
The name pirate is used mostly for its romantic accosiation of the dashing swachbuckler form old pirate movies :)

Most 'pirates' you find are sitting at a gate in a BS with smartbombs. They think that is 'pvp' when actually engaged in a fight they lose.

Hey, I've been a solo pirate for a couple years now, and by my terms "pirate" is different by this:
PvPers kill, Pirates ransom
If you're a pirate and you just blow someone up, that's simply pvp, if you ransom their ship/pod, that's piracy. Yes, you can be a pirate and do both. There are many types of pirates that do many things, I personally love frigate fights and often fight outnumbered, makes it more challenging and fun. I hate gatecamping. Some love to camp, some love the big ships, it all depends on the player. But that one rule is what separates the pirates from the pvpers.

Someone is a "pirate" when the loser whines that the fight was "unfair".
Else: a PvPer.

Edited by: Another Whine on 19/10/2009 13:37:19 Difference between "PvP" and "piracy", even though both paths ends with pain and bloodshed and are the same, is, self-proclaimed "PvP'ers" or "blobbers" as many call them need 10:1 numbers because .... "think of the horror if they lost a ship"
"Pirates" however likes odds of 1:10 because ..... we really like blowing stuff up and if one of the explosions happen to be ourselfes well thats (eve)life
And Gatecamps in lowsec are myths, the only thing going on in lowsec is chaining ...... if you shoot enough haulers they are bound to spawn a BS fleet
Find the Magic word : "you only kill unscouted innocent players in low sec"
Sorry about the excesive use of qutation marks but im wasted atm and it looks cool

This. There are far too many pvp corps around who call themselves pirates and are really nothing but low sec pvpers.

Now to throw my 2 cents into the ring! Ok, so this is all my opinion and is not backed up by any facts or links.
Pirates: Those people that travel around all secs and look for people to kill or ransom. They tend to want the money and loot more than the kill (not all of us play with a L4 mission runner). Losses are fine, so small gangs or rolling solo is fine. Can flipping (not as much baiting) is seen. Anything that has to do with deception and maybe some amounts of trust gaining conversations. Some people just refer to them as "clever griefers" or "parasites of the game".
PvPers: People that look for kills. And many do so in any way possible, from can flipping and baiting, to camping gates. Some actually try to look for the fun, and are more honorable than others. These people don't ransom too often, and would rather see a shiney new killmail than a shiney new wallet blink. They also have some kind of alt for money making (can't fund PvP without cash).
And last, the PvP Cearbear. Nope, not Carebears that PvP, but supposed PvPer's that REFUSE to lose thier ships. What do I mean? These people refuse to fight even the weakest of ships without a blob backing them up, or a logistics fleet waiting for thier signal. They will jump through any hoop to kill someone without loseing a ship. These are the same kind of people that call for support to kill a rookie ship (IE, they bring in a Curse, a Blackbird and other ships to pound the poor Ibis or 'Velator'.)
What do all of these people have in common? Well, they have the love of killing stuff in thier veins, just some perfer different ways to go about doing it. ______________________________________

The term "pirate" is simply just a roleplaying concept. It has no real weight other then that a self-proclaimed pirate corp is most likely interested in playing the game as a possible space pirate would be percieved to act. I.e. camping gates in hope of destroying something and scooping up some valuable cargo, hold someone at ransom, etc.
Then again the above is not exclusive to "pirate" corporations and as such it is much more accurate to assume that it's merely a description of the corporation's mindset.

Pirating is for THE WEAK!
Yeppers, its a pretence centred around the concept of PvP.. But is in reality actually PvC (***** vs Carebear). Most PvC'ers run from a proper fight.

Pirates are the ones who buy up an entire region worth of goods and resell it, essentially stealing all of your build slots and making a profit at your expense.
PVPers are the ones who undercut your cost by .01 ISK and hope your passive tanked wallet runs dry.
Or was it the eye patches and parrots...I forget.

I consider myself a pirate ingame, as that is where my roots were. I learned to enjoy the rush of combat early on, and will generally do anything I can to get that rush.
Things that don't give the rush (for me):
-can-flipping miners -gate-camping losec (until a larger fleet comes to break it up =D) -blobby ganks (7+ vs. 1 BS, or 2+ vs. anything smaller)
Things that do give me that rush:
-1v1 duels (never know what will happen, will you get ganked? logistic'd'd? will it be a fair fight?) -Jumping into overwhelming odds -Running a blockade runner through bubble camps (not exactly piracy lol but still a rush) -Hunting in unknown (to me) space -Moving anything valuable without a scout
Now, I don't usually engage in 'piracy' as such anymore, since that definition usually tends to imply the less fun things such as blobbing, gate camping, etc.
Despite not being blinky red any more, I will always consider myself a pirate in terms of eve. I really wish there was a purpose for piracy in this game, since any traditional definition of the term implies fights that are less than fun.
Whenever I think of "Pirate" I will always remember Dark Twilight Solutions. Those two ****ers gave me my EVEducation in their nano-vagas, and despite the bitter losses (my first 3 BS, and many BCs) I thank them, as without such a harsh lesson I would have surely ended up a carebear.
Able to fly a retriever since 2007 and not a SP in industrial since then, I am Lex, the pirate...YARRRR.

the difference looks pretty obvious to me, and it is money and motivation. we do it for fun and thrill, we do it because we can, because we know how (we like to think so), and because it gives us a profit.
we always honor ramson agreements, some of you already know that, a 'pure pvper' whatever that may be, would not ask for a ramson, as his motivation is supossed to be to just kill players and not precisely to make a living out of them, as every pirate with a few sober neurons will try to do.
you have to understand that our bussiness is 'you', your belongings to be precise. or might i say... 'our stuff'

Main difference is pirates pvp for profit while non-pirates do it as a side activity. Ultimately this leads to pirates going for ransoms and ship ejections rather than actual kills. To a true pirate in this game, a kill is a failed negotiation. I exclude t1 frigates and cruisers from that, those make pretty explosions that are worth more than any ransom you could hope to secure from their release. Of course, new pirates flying smaller ships will see it differently.
Gate camping in a smartbombing BS is piracy but it looks pretty boring imho. I've never done it but I know some who do and it does appear to be cost effective. -----------------------------------------------------

Pirates are 12 to 30 year old kids, without any social life and the mental capacity of a ******, and getting a boner from destroying other peoples games.
PvPers are people who have a social life and looking for a fight with some regards to other players.

MOTIVATION
Piracy is pvp for profit.
Unlike the majority of high sec mercs or 0.0 pvpers, most pirates kill to make a living and survive in the most restrictive and dangerous lifestyle in EVE (while being extremely sexy of course).
It's a lifestyle for people who hate the politics and blobs of 0.0 and the safety and boredom of high sec. For those who like to live in constant danger and make things explode. It's a lifestyle of glamor, forged by the blood and tears of hundreds if not thousands of players. It's about notoriety, respect, and reputation. It's about making a living in unconventional ways whether it be ransoming, extortion, blackmail, or scamming. It's about creating senseless destruction on those not expecting it.
It's about having FUN and being a maverick in a universe of faceless cogs, grinding towards the accumulation of wealth with no meaningful purpose.
Where else can you construct a giant dong in front of your home station, or make a terrified french man sing you a Christmas song on vent to save his pod, or completely bluffing some carebear out of countless hours of work with only the power of conversation and the force of personality. Hulkageddon billions worth of miners for the glory of Allah. Or receive hate mail knowing that the person you killed and forgot about will forever curse your name.
I've pretty much done it all and there is nothing better than being a pirate.

Being torn apart by smartbombs upon leaving warp has to be one of the most violent ways to end up shipless and back in station. Theres not much that gives me PVP shakes nowadays but this situation can do it if im not prepared.
By rights these should be easily avoided but people donĘt always play so cautiously in low sec leading undoubtedly to plenty of classic OHSHII~~~~ moments.
In all honesty its amusing when it last caught me. I was blitzing through low sec in an Incursus, thinking only of the upcoming null sec access point and determining if itĘs bubbled or notą then I got a funny feeling just as I entered warp with only one other pilot in local. Might as well run a check, -10 eh? Better scan and brace forą yup, lol thereĘs my exit gate and a Megathron. Patheticly hopufull activation of my DC and seconds later lag, flash, asplode! Naughty -10 discoĘd got my ship but not my pod, harr. 28 jumps later and a refit I was back on my way to get blobbed by Sylph Alliance.
