is that so? who is running the server now? and can we have their hamsters?

Ouch... that's painful, but qft
+1. Server crashes more than about once a month (considering daily maintenance which could be extended if needed) aren't acceptable. CCP go buy some new hamsters.

This is what happens when you run Windows SQL server. The system borkes and the whole thing dies.
Why can't they just run FreeBSD (or some other type of *BSD) and have mysql or some other handy database on it. I would crash less then the Windows stuff. ---- There is no limit! |

Meh, there was a thread recently about someone calculated a dancer to equal only ~.06 in RL. So, all we need now is CCP to start selling those next to the plexes and all will be much better with the verse.

Because they only use Windows/Mac now. No *nix. It is plain un-american to run anything but Windows/Apple.
Actually thought my client had frozen at first, running through Wine. Sound wasn't looping though.

Honestly, I thikn there very very little change MySQL or PgSQL or any of their cousins could handle the transaction volume and speed.... Now partition that data well and put it into a massive Oracle cluster and we can talk.

Honestly, no one wants to pay millions of dollars a year to use Oracle. Funny how the server has ran on MS SQL all this time and it works fine, something like this happens and its OMFG ditch that piece of M$ s*it and get something real.

This is the dumbest thing I've read today. Do you have *any* idea why they chose MS SQL over other RDBMS's? Do you have *any* idea what resources MS has dedicated to Eve over the last 5 years? Do you have *any* idea why the server is currently down and what it would take to prevent it recurring?
No, you don't. You have no information to base any opinion on, you have nothing. You are the worst kind of cheerleader for OSS, where you just roll in and blame ANY problem on closed software without justification of any sort. All that happens is people with a clue realise you're an idiot, and the good people working in the OSS movement look bad by association. You are in fact hurting the products you think you're helping.
The idea that you could run something like Eve on MySQL is so stupid it's funny. There *are* free RDBMS's that can handle Eve or be modded to handle Eve, but MySQL is definitely not one of them.
The best thing you can do for these products you love is just shut up. Opening your mouth isn't helping.

Please leave the computer science to the scientists. Do you have any data to suggest that MS SQL is at fault for the server problems? The answer to this question is ``no'' because CCP does not provide us with any means of gathering that data.
I doubt that you understand the costs involved in switching RDBMSes. It's not as simple as drop in a new database, move your data, and go. SQL is, in theory, standard between them - sure - but in practice, this doesn't hold up _at all_. Your simplest SELECT queries might be portable, but your hundred-line stored procedures and replication setups sure as hell aren't. There's also a _MASSIVE_ amount of quality assurance work that needs to be done.
And to boot, your suggested candidate MySQL has had QA problems of their own - the former MySQL AB president has gone on record criticizing the 5.1 release. It had several critical bugs reported during the release candidate phases which were not fixed by the time it was declared stable. --- Owl |

Yes, some fortune 500 companies make limited use of a product. That must mean it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and it can be used in all situations!
