Hi there,
We've been playing for 3-4 months, we have 6 characters between the two of us, and we want to taste carebear tears.
Should we just go to a low-sec system and scan the cargoholds of passing haulers? Just how big a hit will we take in standings and is it worth it, or are we better off scanning someone down in WH space?

Edited by: Omara Otawan on 17/09/2009 04:04:23 Scanning haulers (for target selection purposes) is not gonna do it, if you want any success you just kill them all and search their wrecks for good stuff, there are not many going through lowsec anyway.
You'll need at least cruiser sized ships with fairly good tanks to kill haulers before you die to sentries, preferrably battlecruisers (which in turn will make you perfect targets for other pirates and pvp folks).
If its just about carebear tears, I'd suggest stealing ore from miners or probe mission runners and steal their loot (in highsec), you get a fight from them now and then, and the tears are gonna be plenty.

Oooo... I thought sentries/concord was only in .5+ To completely avoid NPCs/sentries we gotta go to nullsec/WH?

Yes... oh yes it is. I want to lick the salt from their swollen, puffy eyes. I want to wipe their frustration from the corners of my mouth. I want to... (ad infinitum)

Yes, all low sec has sentries.
However, I wouldn't advise going to 0.0, you will die alot . . . . . more than in low sec due to bubbles and lose your pods to boot.
Start out in Frigates or Cruisers, check www.battleclinic.com for fittings, or the ships and modules section on the forum
Should start out in frigs, catch cruisers and other frigs ratting.
When you think your really fluent in frigates, up to cruisers, and you should probably stay at cruisers for a while, cause like someone said, anything bigger makes you an AUTOMATIC target for other pirates and pvp'ers, battlecruisers are slow to align, have more than big enough sig radius and are quite a bit more expensive (30million isk for a Vexor + all the equipment for me ; Myrmidon costs MORE than 30 million, let alone fittings and riggings, more in the range of 80 mil total value of my Myrmidon)
When you get to cruisers however, that also widens your array of targets, when you start flying cruisers, you can start engaging ratting battlecruisers, thats hard to do with frigates.
Good Luck. Please re-size your signature to a maximum of 400 x 120 with the file size not exceeding 24000 bytes.Applebabe

Go to Amamake and fly to the top belt in the list. Carebear miner corps frequently hold mining ops there but they often have a cruiser for a guard, so bring a Battlecruiser.

You will be better off trying to ransom ratters or ganking pirates than trying to intercept a hauler in low-sec. It's up to pilot error for a blockade runner to get caught in low-sec.

Edited by: Chiastic Slide on 18/09/2009 00:12:57 So high-sec players can't go through low-sec without getting killed and people who want to gank carebears can hardly do it without getting bust up in low-sec or null?
This game sounds a bit uneven.

It's just that OP is going to die a lot because he hasn't figured stuff like sentry guns and CONCORD before aiming for low sec.

Edited by: Simone Khan on 18/09/2009 07:27:54 Gate Camp 101 - You need at least 4 or 5 pilots to do it right. And your ships need to be able to tank the gate guns. Battlecrusiers are fine.
1) Find a low sec system bordering high sec (preferably a pipe into null sec) 2) Have one pilot (cloaked if possible) stay in the high sec system a bit off the gate to tell you whats coming in. 3) Make a safe spot 4000km off the gate in the low sec system. 4) When something juicy (that you know you can take) approaches the gate, warp to the gate and kill it when it jumps in. Pick up the loot and warp back to the safe spot.
Fit your ships for max damage with just enough tank to handle the gate guns. Fit sensor boosters with tracking scripts to lock your targets quicker.
Always watch local. If ships start jumping in from another system. They are probably coming for you. so dock up.
Whenever possible put another pilot (cloaked) in the next low sec system in the pipe. He can warn you if a fleet is jumping in or tell you if something is coming through that gate that you might be able to kill.
I usually pick up 3 to 6 kills an hour (including 3 ORCAS in the past week)
Have Fun!

Until you can tank the sentry guns I would just flip cans or scan down mission runners in High Sec and take their stuff and get em to shoot at you. Maybe they will even war dec you.
You could also war dec the mission runner corps in high sec that number up to 30 to 40 in the attributes tab of the corp description. This usually means they have only about 10 or so people who are active in the corp. And since you only number a handful (which include alts) and you are not that old in-game you may get them to undock and fight.
If you do the high sec war dec thing I wold also advise you to have a locator agent. Mission runners tend to scatter when war decced. And they tend to be surprised if you take 20 jumps to hunt them down. ************************************************* I have three characters. One has Cov Ops V along with all the bells and whistles that goes with it. |

Go to a system like Amamake and hunt around looking for targets. There are plenty of lone frigates hunting there. Amamake is a pretty nasty system though and at first you will spend a lot of the time either being out-gunned by a skilled opponent or blobbed by a large number of ships. Don't worry about it. You will quickly learn how to spot a trap and as you gain experience you will win more and more fights. I made lots of friends when I first started doing this in my Rifter.
For tips on how to pilot a frigate in combat take a look at my Rifter PvP guide.
