I've found that destroyers are a very difficult class to fly correctly and effectively. They are great at killing frigs and some AF's, as DPS boosters, bounty stealing and things like that. It takes practice and work to figure out how to use them best, but I don't think at all that they're useless.

Destroyers aren&t very well balanced. Only Trasher can do both close range and long range effectively. 3 meds, can be shield buffered and decent dps. I would say it&s it's "perfect" destroyer.
Coercer has plenty of dps and range (pulse coercer is almost sexy) but with only one mid it&s pure damage platform and it lacks alpha which is still useful for killing smaller ships despite hp buffs. And CCP fix medium beams and pulses, those are stupidly hard to fit and use on ships they're supposed to be used on.
Cormorant is pure long range platform but it's not really preferable to use it over harpy for most part IMO. Damage and alpha are low.
Catalyst can put out dps but it has very low alpha with rails. DPS with blasters is rather commendable but it's very fragile ship and you have to armor buffer it since you only have 2 meds to use (propulsion and scram). Fairly mediocore speed. Could be fun for quick solo strikes against ratting cruisers?

I don't see why that would be true. An AF is going to have to come into scrambler range to get any kind of reasonable damage from frigate-sized weapons. After I turn off his MWD he may as well have nothing. Well, worse than nothing since his cap will still be gimped.
And what are AFs going for these days? 20 million + fitting? That's about three times the cost of a competitive Thrasher fit.
I'm a bit of a cheapskate, so my Thrashers are about 7M a pop, or 12M if I'm going a bit overboard with the fit (trying a poly-fit thrasher now).
Anyway, a AF coming in scrambler range means he's going to most likely win, unless I caused enough damage to kill it already. Consider that a arty thrasher will have a disruptor, so you have either a scram or a web in the remaining mid (or you maybe roll with a MSE, but I don't like the MSE fits tbh) - both of which will only buy you some time and most likely not enough, given the arty Thrasher's hitpoints.
It relies very much on keeping range for a good portion of the fight.
Okay, sure, an arty thrasher is going to be in trouble at short range. That's why I much prefer autos for 1 vs 1.

I have killed 3 Ishkurs in a arty Thrasher and lost 1, and only because I burned off my guns with the Ishkur in half hull, the noob.
Of course, all were AB fit.

Edited by: Steve Thomas on 17/09/2009 23:29:01 Thrasher is so good you can use it for many of the level 2 kill missions with a half decent fit.
That or its proof as to how meh our cruisers are
The rest are for tearing apart Frigate swarms, Drone swarms, as salvage boats and overpowering Level 1 missions more or less in that order.
PvP the Wolfpack will rip you a new one repetedly with them but you need to know what your doing and how to fit what you fly, and they have issued Vs some of the PvP fit groups in some of low sec.
No sec? Flackbait for the most part.

The Rupture is a downright excellent cruiser, at least as far as PvP is concerned.
Due to the popularity of AF's and their huge price increase T1 Cruisers are more viable now than they've been in a very long time. Unfortunately however it seems like at least the turret based ones will become AF-fodder if the proposed AB-bonus changes go through.
As for the Thrasher it's awesome, I'm not that fond of the AC variant though but the arty fit is very cool indeed.

I use dessy's to rat BS spawns in .4-.2 where you can usually get just one or two Battle ships with support frigs...
Its really easy to get under the big ship guns and just unload lots of dps and get the bounties...
Frigget pirates usually leave ya alone when they realize their scanning down a dessy too...
Just bolt when and if you see cruiser or bigger.
The Intakis have an obligation to defend the Federation, but not to assult others on its behalf. |
