i'm currently running on XP Home amd 3200+ 64 bit 2 gigs of ram and a pny 8600GT 256mb vid card. Before the graphics patch i could run 2 instances of windowed Eve( one on each of my two monitors) with the graphics turned all the way up without any probs. Now not so much, it's pretty laggy with the graphics turned all the way down (17fps).Both monitors are set at 1024 x 768
My question is i need a simple and VERY cheap ($100 or less)solution to get me back up to running the way it was before. I was thinking of a 8800gt or a 9600GT. Can i overclock the 8600GT to get be by for a bit? i'm also open to ATI cards tho i haven't used one in years. Would another gig of ram help??? I just need something to get me by until i get a new computer in a few months
Any suggestions???? ----------------------------------------

Its a bit of a big card tho so you need plenty of case space and preferably good cooling. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Run both copies of EVE, see what your ram usage is. If it is close to or more than the amount of ram you have, ram is your problem. If not, it's your graphics card.
Personally I think an 8600 gt isn't powerful enough to run eve twice, but it could also have something to do with only having a single-core cpu.
Also investigate your eve graphics cache setting.
You're not going to be able to overclock enough to go from 17fps to playable. - Experienced EVE player trying a new character |

fps on a game like eve is 90% of the time related to your gpu. CPU and RAM are important obviously, but your graphics card is what gets taxed the most. also, the HIS Hd 4770 512mb is pretty much the fastest graphics card for less than ú100.

Edited by: Lurkios on 11/09/2009 17:05:46 Unless your current PC somehow has a pci-e slot and you can just purchase the gfx card you plan to use in your new pc early and use it until you get the new one...
I doubt there's anything you can do that'd really be worth the money. A 9600 isn't going to make any difference really:
for nvidia xx00 series cards read first number as architecture, second number as a performance rating of sorts
so a 9600, while more or less equal to an 8600 (save for architecture optimizations and such) would be less powerful then an 8800.
It'd really be kind of a waste to buy a more expensive gfx card if you're just planning to upgrade - since your new PC will almost certainly using pci-express... (And any pci card capable of running eve well is probably going to be over $100.
I doubt ram is really your issue... Another gig certainly isn't going to hurt anything, but I really don't think it's going to help anything either. (You'd see ram making more difference during load times, such as undocking, if a fleet were to warp in, etc. etc. With 2 gigs you shouldn't be so low that you are having to page for regular flying.)

Not quite, the newer ones are generally 100-200 more powerful than the old, so 9600 is roughly equivalent to a theoretical 8700. It's at least twice as powerful as the 8600, but still much weaker than the rev2 8800 or the 9800 (which are the exact same chip). - Experienced EVE player trying a new character |

I used to get a problem that looked a lot like internet lag, but it was actually due to lack of memory.
It was noticeable mostly when warping to busy gates where the game would stutter a lot, once you were at the gate with everything loaded into memory it was smooth again.
If your pc goes to the hard drive a lot when you are warping to a gate then maybe more memory will help.

I have XP Home 2.2 duo core, 2 gigs of RAM, and a 1 gig 8500GT Nvidia card. I run two clients fine, regular graphics, and usually surf the web at the same time.
So my guess would be the video card. We have about the same model, but mine has a lot more built in memory. Both of our cards are on the crappy side but the built in memory probably makes the different for me. ----------------------------------------------------

Wrong. I have an 8600 GT 256MB DDR2. Runs two instances of EVE just fine. It could probably handle one more. I also have 3GB of DDR2 OCZ RAM.

Edited by: Korizan on 11/09/2009 18:52:34 Well first question you have to ask is how is your computer running with one client ? If it was effected by the patch then you have something to work with.
SINGLE CLIENT RUNNING Quick test what is your frame rate in station and in space. If you are getting less then 60 FPS on space sitting @ a planet your graphics card will most likely be the problem.
Now multiple clients are effected by your RAM ,How many cores you are running and your video card or cards. Each item you change will help but like any chain it is only as strong as your weakest link.
In other words they are all bottle necks and upgrading one will not make the issue go entirely away.
Now when I run 2 clients on a AMD 4000+ single core with 4 gig ram and a single 3870 video card I will see 60 FPS on the monitor I have selected and the other one will see about 20 FPS till I select it then the frame rates reverse. monitor sizes 1600 x 1200 & 1280 x 1024
If I go to a different computer AMD x4 920 Phenom II with 8 Gig of ram and 2 3870 video cards I can run both clients, one on each monitor again monitor sizes 1600 x 1200 & 1280 x 1024 and they both will show a clean 60 FPS no matter what I do.

Hmm,
I have a (512mb I think) 9800GT and I noticed EVE running very slowly, it was client side as my connectivity and bandwidth had not changed.
Things would just take a while to load e.g. ship models, station interior etc.
When I upgraded to 4gb from my previous 2gb, this problem dissapeared.
HOWEVER:
At the same time as the upgrade, I also had a nasty bit of malware removed from my PC that was doing all sorts of indecent, rude things to the registry; so it was probably that.
Why not save up your pennies and upgrade both? EVE Trivia EVE History

Quick and easy fix. Don't be an Eve Slave and play with one single account until you have fully upgraded your PC.
There is plenty of fun to be had with only one session...
