Right now I have a pilot who has been spending the last 4 months in a hangar training learning skills and the basic ship fundamentals while I figure out what exactly I'm going to do with him. But I'm having a slight dilemma with that process. I tried to roleplay in EVE a few times in the past few years I've popped in and out of the game. But what I've observed is a majority group of players who have argued and shunned against my attempts to roleplay with arguments that the finer mechanics of the game beyond "care-bearing" just don't leave any room for it. So, I got a bit discouraged. EVE Online is about the only game I haven't roleplayed in for the 14 years I've been in MMORPG's. I'm asking the general populace on a RP specific forum if attempting to try again is going to be worth the frustration of putting up with a crowd that I see as having us outnumbered by a large margin. I already know that if I want to roleplay, I ought to simply ignore the nah-sayers and just have fun with it. My issue is talking to myself in a pod in the middle of space just doesn't seem very fun to me. I can only have so many conversations with myself before I run out of things to talk about. Razz
What I would like to be involved in is an environment of roleplay that isn't clickish. I would like to find a group that would accept my pilot for how *I* choose to develop him and not attempt to mold me into what they think I ought to be or a route best suited based on game mechanics. I'm not interested in the functions of game mechanics. I learn that by trial and error. What I'm interested in is immersing myself into my character and the universe that surrounds him. Game mechanics are certainly not everything. |

RPing with other RPers is a possible solution? If you RP in the game, do so in RP-only channels. And remember, local isn't an RP channel. Local is the unofficial talking bull**** channel/checking for targets radar. Find some people that want to RP and do so in a private channel with them. Also, most things EVE-related are in-character whether the player wants it to be or not. Only obvious out of character but EVE-related examples I can come up with faster than I can type are nerfs/buffs by CCP. Also, most game mechanics are explained by new eden version of laws of physics.
And if you are asking this on a RP specific forum, why are you also asking this here? -------------------------------------------------

That part was meant to be edited out. I moved it from the Intergalactic Summit forums. |

Mr. Gunvald, have you looked into the Caldari Independent Navy Reserve [CAIN]? They may be a bit to "clique-ish" as you say, but at least that's one good option. Also, try using the corporation recruitment screen and filter for corporations using only the "roleplaying" tag. In general, the above poster is correct in saying that RP in EVE is best done with a group that goes out of its way to roleplay. There are many groups that do. Just remember that if the first doesn't work out for you, leave the corp and hunt for another.

Ah-- a fellow player whose goal is simply to "play the character." Always good to see.
First thing: corporations that are specifically geared to our style of play are very rare because players like us are very rare. Most will allow OOC concerns to influence their roleplay, if not actually guide it. It's difficult not to, considering that real consequences follow.
The best thing to do is generally to find a corporation that suits the direction your character wants to go. If your character is a loyal Caldari, go for a Caldari loyalist corporation. If a corporation does not yet exist that represents what you want the character to be, well, you can always start one.
Once this is done, the way you stay "true" to your character is simple: you stick with the corp for as long as your character would do so and otherwise do what your character would. Do not hold others to the same standard or expect them to understand your approach; just leave them to play in their own way.
If you feel you must alert your corporation to your views on the game and your character, be careful how you broach the topic. Indicating a willingness to betray as soon as betrayal becomes in-character is easily mistaken for declaring treacherous intent. Some will respect you for your dedication to your character, but others will find your approach impossible to understand, wondering how your character can be more important than your OOC friendships.
Eve is a great community for roleplay, but the "serious" roleplayers are a tiny minority. Be flexible, keep your head down, withhold judgment on those not willing to go as far as you are, and you'll have a blast.
Oh-- and yes, RP channels are a good way of getting involved, as is the Intergalactic Summit, where you first posted.

My personal opinion, in-game RP beats forum RP every time, but that's my personal style.
It sounds like you at least know what you want, just that you're not sure how to go about getting it. Places to start in-game would be The Summit channel, and you can join the channel OOC for out-of-character interaction, which is used by a decent portion of the community. Also, look around on OOC Forums and see if you see anything you like. Chatsubo
Find people you like playing with, keep true to your character's personality and traits and purge everyone who gets in the way
