I hope WIS never comes out, or if it does you have to own dust and an xbox and pay another sub or something to do it. Besides if you want to walk around dressed like a ****** 'cybering' then secondlife is free and full of like minded people... Oh and griefers from ebums

@OP: You do realize that this is a spaceship game...right?
I mean...the original premise of the game was undock, fly around, do some stuff, dock.

Couldn't agree more. It was a terrible idea when it was announced, and I was hoping the Dust announcement would mean the end of WiS. Currently I'm still only 50/50 on whether it will ever appear, and still 100% sure it will suck.

Edited by: James Vayne on 02/09/2009 12:13:47 There's a factor you're not considering here.
Sneaky Marketing Lies.
Marketing department says: No, no WIS in dominion.
Then they release Dominion and ZOMG! it has WiS and everyone says 'How cool is that!'
It's a way of stopping consumers becoming too apathetic in regards to future developments. Judging from the fanfest material from last year, I'd say WiS was good to go. CCP said that they'd had troubles with animating the avatars realistically but i'd propose that with the advent of DUST 514 they overcame this problem a while back. WiS is good to go, they're just holding it back until an opportune time. Probably until they have the first 6 months of metrics from the release of DUST 514 to see how this has impacted the user base of EVE in regards to people subscribing or, like yourself, canceling said subscription.
That said, They're probably adding more to it. WiS would get fairly boring if all you did was walk about so I expect they're developing WiS missions and epic arcs to give WiS some real functionality and interest other than 'Hey i can walk about....now i wanna go back to my ship and kill some people'.
The question you have to ask yourself is; do you want WiS NOW? Or would you rather wait a bit longer for better development and more content?

It is pretty annoying though. Like Factional Warfare that was supposed to come out in 2006 for Kali but dosen't actually til 2 years later and even then, it felt like they spent less than a week on it
I'm hoping Ambulation will be a little more complete if it ever comes out but I can't hold my breath at this point.

Most gamers like the ability to be able to walk outside and socialize with others. This is why games like World of Warcraft and Second Life is so popular. Being able to live out your dreams is always a great thing. ________________________________________________

We play immortal pod pilots with bucket loads of money and ships that can take us anywhere...What's real life like again I left mine cus it was pretty dull.
Still the beer and whiskey tastes nicer in the real world than it does for pretend in game.
As for Walking in Station, Ambulation or whatever it's going to be called when it actually arrives, I'll see myself sitting in the corp office wondering if I should undock and then deciding not to as it's too big out there so I'll get the corp mates to do stuff instead. Hopefully you can direct members via the new COSMOS system (communications not the old cosmos system) while sitting in a station reading a book.
I think this is the most negative thread I've ever written, sorry long day in front of the spreadsheet.

Yeah technically I'm just taking a long break. But, that's still somewhere around 100 less bucks for CCP, if not more.
The responses to my OP were priceless as always. Eve forums do not disappoint.
FYI I really did cancel my sub, and I don't play WoW. I'll be using this time to do other things besides mmos. Also, there were a few folks who agreed with me that not having WiS is game-breaking. Power to you folks.
As for CCP not promising WiS for winter release; by the mere fact that they included the statement "WiS won't be in this release" in their announcement, shows that they were refuting there WELL PERPETUATED idea that it WOULD be released in the winter. Of course, legally, they never announced it. Whatever. No one ever legally does anything these days. Just like I'm legally not quitting Eve.
I still like the game and like I said, I wasn't upset. It'd help ya'll to read (but who expects your average Eve forum goer to do that?) I'm just telling CCP (and by extension all of you folks) that CCP loses a few hundred bucks (a drop in the bucket yeah) for being such slow-asses on WiS.
End of story. I'd close the thread if I could. |

It was a very subtle jab at people only being able to socialize in game and it being a dream. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Anarchis Zanas on 09/09/2009 14:11:03 Although I'm sure I won't actually enjoy the WiS experience myself I think expanding the gaming options is exactly what Eve is about. Everything is optional in Eve, you can do what you want and that's the nature of a sandbox game. The choices is what I love about Eve online. Adding the ability to walk around stations or fight in FPS mode on Dust follows those same ideals because you can just play the part of the game you enjoy since that is what video games are about, having fun. I like the direction CCP want to take things, opening up new possibilities and choices for the player base. Eve already feels like several games together as when you play most games you do a, b, c - probably in that exact order too whereas in Eve you decide what type of game you want to play.
On the topic though, I don't feel WiS is game breaking for the current player base at all. Mainly because the people who have been playing Eve for a while are here because of what is already in the game, not what is missing. I get bored with Eve myself but that's because I've played it for so long, that happens with all games, it's the different options that keeps me entertained after all this time. It would be nice to expand the horrizon for the player base, to bring in more players and add more possibilities, since that is what a true sandbox is all about. But I can't really imagine what WiS could provide to the current player base that would be the difference between subscribing or not unless they are planning far more than they have announced (or with my ignorance, more than I have read). So whats so big about WiS that will make you resub after it's implemented?
