Before i go into this i would like to say that i dont know a whole lot about computers.
I have been using the computer for a while now. It was when i was about 17, so my Dad got it from dell. It seemed a decent enough PC and ran all the games I had. The only change i have made to it is a new graphics card and a new mouse (well a new mouse mat aswell).
However it is starting to run slow and im unsure if it well cope with the new games that are coming out. I was looking to spend a small amount on it and try and replace some bits and bobs. My budget will be about z100-200.
Dont realy know how to put what i ahve got but ill give it a shot.
Windows vista (yeah i know) ATI 4850 2GB of ram Intell 6600 2.4ghz no idea what motherboard and tbh i dont know how to find out. A basic integrated sound card
So simple question is what is the most cost effective way of improving my computer.
Im really sorry about being so crap at this, but i would appreciate all feedback.
ask any question you want and ill try my best to answer. cheers _____________________________________

Is it starting to run slow on things that ran quicker before or is it a problem with new software? If it is the first item, you might want to look at defraging the hard drive for a little better performance. Also to help get a little more speed you could make sure as your default when you boot up you don't have a lot of crap running in the background that is chewing up cycles. Also, when you are gaming you should disable any services that you don't need at the moment. It is best to do this by copying your configuration and then tweaking the copy so you can boot from it when necessary.
Now I understand you aren't very computer literate so this sounds like craziness, I suggest you get some friend who is knowledgable who can maybe help you.
If it was me I'd take the 200 bucks and pay someone to break into a neighbors house and swipe their better PC. Just make sure that the neighbor has insurance so he can get a nice new computer. lol (I am joking of course...well sort of...)
And get that new mouse mat before you have some real problems...

i have vista 32 and looking to 'buy' windows 7.
I do defragg but it is more the newer things that are running slower, so the latter option. While not being a computer genius i can do basics and i do keep my computer in good health.
But i was more looking at how i can make it play on up and coming games

Well if you get windows 7, look at the 64 bit version then you can buy more RAM, most mobos support up to 8gig. And look at downloading the program CCleaner, just goggle it and read reviews and such...good for cleaning up junk on ur comp and making run a bit smoother...its a free download btw :)

Any idea what ram to get as there seems to be a **** ton of them. Probs will only get 4 GB as i think that will be fine.
The other question is if a quad core is worth the money. And if so can i only stay with intell? __________________________________________________________

I fail at posting with my main the last two times,
meant to post with me
Well Kingston, Corsair and Mushkin are decent brands for memory. As for the processor quad core is good, dual core is good too. Your processor speed is 2.4 gHz which isnt bad but if you want to upgrade it just make sure the socket is compatible with ur mobo before you buy it. And know how to switch out your processor too

Oh and to find out your mobo manufacturer, http://www.gtopala.com/ this site has a handy tool called siw that you download and just run and gives all kinds of info on your comp. including your mobo manufacturer and model and stuff. I recommend goggling siw reviews first and reading about it.

Get Motherboard monitor or sisoft sandra to find out what MoBo you have.
Is your version of Vista 32 or 64?. If 64, get 2 gig more memory and maybe a better gfx card. You should be able to get 4 gig o' ram and a 4890 gfx card for z200

I would Recommend CPU-Z, as it tells you alot more than just your mobo make. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

If it's a Dell motherboard your best bet is to put on a necklace of garlic and dance around the thing casting evil out of your house...
A Dell won't be too upgradable, too much proprietary hardware, at least it used to anyway...
