Edited by: Soon Shin on 08/08/2009 19:26:43 Eve is nice and all with its UI and interface, but I don't feel like I'm actually piloting a ship as proclaimed by CCP, the point and click moving is really cliche in my personal opinion, not to mention its kinda hard to direct which direction you ship should go.
I'm not sure if this has been done or not, since EVE Forums doesn't really have a search tool.
I'm proposing that there should be a new control for ships, giving an option for players to move the ships left, right, up and down using the arrow keys and using the WASD to accelerate, decelerate, shift the ship left and right for sharper turning.
The agility, mass, and max speed will of course affect how the ship flies, but this control scheme will allow players have a higher degree of control over their ships.
When you want to turn right, you have click at an area right of your ship and wait 5 seconds for the ship to simply react to the command. but by using the arrow keys, the ship will respond instantly, making it turn precisely when you want it to turn.
The player can quickly interchange between using the arrow keys and the mouse for convenience.
This way a person's piloting skills will have, in my opinion, a greater degree of impact in fights.

Do they have a mouse and a keyboard in a pod in the first place?

no, but i think it is easier to use your mind to assign a direction to the flight computer and let it to all the work then to say to it "do a triple loop-de-loop then turn 34 degrees to port side.
21,000 years into the future , manual control is obsolete

Edited by: nemississ on 08/08/2009 19:39:24 To do what you propose ccp would have to completly re write the game from top to bottom and create an entirly new engine.

Do you seriously think that in a 6 year old game like eve, this has never been suggested before, and if it has, there might be a reason it havn't been implemented? It has been suggested again and again and again, it is not going to happend for technical reasons with lag and server load, deal with it.

With each tick of pressing and holding an arrow key it will send a move reponse to the server, this response has to be sent back to every player to their client to update their known position of where you are.
Modern FPS' can struggle with 64 players with each player receiving all the data, EVE online will regulary use 100+ players and in null fights nearing 1000 pilots can be fighting. If now without it the nodes can crash and people can have up to 5min latency times, how would 1000x more commands help that situation. If you are also able to propose a networking solution to getting 1000 dynamic clients in sync with over 1000 commands a minute each then you will have a job anywhere in the world. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |
