Current Situation: The average EVE player may not be aware that they have to save their settings folder periodically or they risk losing Overview settings and Bookmark folder organization in the event of a hard drive crash/wipe. The task a repopulating your bookmark folders when they've all been dumped into main space within People & Places is a frustrating one.
Proposed Solution: Save bookmark folders server-side. Bookmarks are already preserved that way so maintaining folder structure is the next logical step towards making EVE more user friendly.
Pros: New players and veterans alike won't be quite so frustrated by the loss of settings folder files.
Cons: It will no doubt require some additional database load on CCP's servers.

I support this but it's only the tip of the iceberg. There are additional settings which I'd like to be saved server-side.

Agreed. I have hundreds of players in my buddies list and I run eve on different operating systems and different machines. Recently, my local Eve user settings became corrupt due to excessive fiddling. I wiped them out and launched the Eve client to rebuild everything. Now, I don't have folders in my buddy list -just hundreds of names in one list.
Other candidates for server-side saving might include the following: *Ship Fittings *From the Esc screen menu: General Settings, Layout, *Theme Selection* *Character screen: Remember the last page viewed. *and etc...
It's a great start, Avalloc. Thank you.

Supported, but for ALL settings.
If the database load/storage is the problem, store the settings on another system that may not even be connected to the current server network and sync them (ie, transfer only if different) on client startup or shutdown.
Pros: Log in from an internet cafT, and you still have your settings. No extra load on the game servers nor on the game network. Only minor changes client side for transferring the file on startup/shutdown. No changes to server.
Cons: Minor change to client. Bandwidth will go up slightly if many people run their accounts on different machines. Feature to "clear settings" must be implemented in the web gui. -- Ceterum censeo reinforcements needs to stop shooting drones. |

With the additional parameters specified by mr Dirk above, I wholeheartedly agree.
Redoing your fittings, your overview and bm folders, is not fun at all.

I don't see why this is necessary. It means more lag server side, for something that takes very little effort client side. If CCP needed to stop us spamming directional scanner to stop lag, think how many server resources searching for all our bookmarks will take! ---------------------------------------

Actually, I was just considering this. The best idea I could think of was the ability to build yourself a library that compresses all settings and stores it in a small file. This way, not only could you restore your settings and save the server hamsters, but you could also share settings with others.
This would require a bit of coding, especially so it doesn't affect the raw game files and only changes the cache. The file could be shared on eve-files or saved to a USB drive for portability, or simply e-mailed.
Otherwise, I do support this measure.

I use a desktop at home and laptop when travelling.
Bookmarks and Market quick-links should be stored server side.
Overviews... I would suggest that this be optional. If you use different machines, then its likely that screen sizes are different, so overviews would be different.
Maybe your main settings are stored, but you have the option to use local settings on a secondary machine.
