There is an issue with the latest WINE releases that cause EVE to crash randomly for no reason at all. In the last couple of days the person that introduced the patch that "created" this problem discovered that the issue is directly tied to the fact that although EVE (and other games) report as being able to run in high memory location, it includes d3d9x, which CANNOT run in high memory, so certain memory ops can throw the client out of range for d3d9x, and cause the client to crash hard. So, without further adieu, here's how to get EVE running on just about every linux system out there.
Please note, although this SHOULD work on most linux systems, I'd like to state that this guide was written with X86 version of Fedora Core 11. Milage may vary; if you had to do something a bit different, let me know and I'll modify my instructions accordingly!
- Uninstall wine from your repo if it is already installed. You may want to remove your ~/.wine directory also (which will remove all installed apps); but it isn't absolutely necessary.
- Make sure you have installed the recommended packages for wine. Running "./configure" later on should produce no warnings about missing libraries.
- Open a console and navigate to ~/ (home)
- Download the bleeding edge source for WINE (make a sandwich while you wait):
- git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ~/wine-git
- Navigate to the new source path:
- Download the low-memory bug patch and save it to ~/wine-git (virtual.diff):
- Apply the patch. It should say "patching file dlls/ntdll/virtual.c" alone with no warnings or errors.:
- Compile WINE (and make a lot of sandwiches while you wait). Please note that you will have to "sudo" or "su -" or whatnot to obtain root privlages in order to run the "make install" command properly:
- ./configure
- make depend && make
- make install
- Download or otherwise obtain "d3dx9_35.dll" and "d3dx9_36.dll" and place it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
- Run "winecfg", click on the audio tab, make sure the audio test works, press apply, then click OK to close the box.
- Download winetricks:
- wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
- Install corefonts and vc6 runtime (for good measure) via winetricks:
- Run "regedit" and add the following entries. Note that you may have to add the keys to Current User, and that all values are of type string:
- [Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]
"DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="1024" "MaxVaryings"="52" "MaxVertexUniforms"="1024" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" (if you have graphical glitches with interface, change it in "Backbuffer" ) "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="(you videocard memory here)"
Once you have done all that, you should be able to run EVE with all of the settings maxed out (assuming you have a decent video card of course). Although there are minor problems here and there, it seems that 99% of everything looks and runs fine, including EVE voice and shaders. The UI is near flawless, except that you can resize window into unusable negative width/heights (so don't do that :p). Also, some people have issues alt-tabbing out of EVE (causing a crash), you can fix this by running EVE in a window the same size as the desktop (thus effectively being full screen but not exclusive). You may also want to disable desktop effects (compiz, etc) if you are experiencing weird problems as well.
Hope this was helpful!

This is great! Worked like a charm. Thank you.
Steps 6 and 7 are no longer neccessary since the patch is now included in the repository. Step 2 can be done by executing, as root, `apt-get build-dep wine` on Debian, Ubuntu and other Debian-based distributions.

So you are saying that the NEW patch (the one that disables messing with lower memory, NOT the commit that had to be reversed) is now in TRUNK? If confirmed, I will remove the steps from the guide.

I'm on Fedora, and I didn't want to assume a distro so I simply guide them to the multi-distro guide on wine's site, but thanks for the tip :)

At least it says this:

Alexandre patched dlls/ntdll/virtual.c after the reports on Bugzilla:
http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/?a=commit;h=c10bdbefd69786846b035d1c38de3052bed67875
So, yes, I think it's safe to assume it's in the TRUNK now, and most likely in 1.1.27, when out. --- Kat :: Recruitment :: Hikage Corporation :: Veritas Immortalis |

The latest wine release, 1.1.27 should contain patches to prevent the freeing of memory which was killing Eve on Linux.
Per the bug link from the wine developers, the 64-bit Eve is loading the 32-bit Direct X libraries, possibly in a way that even Microsoft says not to do.
I can't test 1.1.27 due to lack of network access at home at the moment. I did use a patched git checkout successfully for the last week.
If the problem is persisting, please reopen the bug report with wine and ask the Eve dev team to look into if they are 'voiding their warranty' in how they use Direct X.
Some Tips:
- Re-cleaning the ~/.wine installation should not be a necessary piece of voodoo if you had running wine 1.1.24 or earlier. wine should update non-overridden libraries as needed. YMMV and I recommend backup of the ~/.wine directory in any change, update, downgrade or experiment.
- I keep the CCP folder elsewhere in my home (~/Documents/Eve/CCP) and link it back (ln -s ~/Documents/Eve/CCP ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP) instead of completely reinstalling the several gigabytes of EVE each and every single time.
- EVE needs two 32-bit direct X libraries at this time, d3dx9_35.dll and d3dx9_36.dll. You can keep them in the CCP/EVE directory instead of in the %SYSTEMROOT%/system32 directory (usually ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32). Windows and wine loads libraries by looking at the application's directory first then the system32 directory. This tip works well with the previous tip.
- If you run wine from the command line a lot, setup a shell alias. For instance, for ksh you add to .kshrc the line
alias wine2 'wine --display :0.1 explorer /desktop=EVE2,800x600 C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe'
and open a new terminal window. Typing wine2 in the new window should start an in-a-desktop 800x600 Eve on monitor 2. When EVE finished loading, the window will naturally resize to whatever resolution you set in EVE.
You can create another alias, say wine1, without the --display option and with a different desktop level (say, EVE1) to quickly (re-)start wine on your first desktop if you have multiple monitors. You can use this to setup debugging wine runs by adding the wine +debug options.
- If you do re-install wine a lot just to play eve or other Direct X games, you can export the whole [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\Wine\Direct3D] key. Say it is exported to a file called my_filename.reg . Import that each time you re-install by running 'wine regedit my_filename.reg'. Obviously keeping the file outside of ~/.wine is required to preserve it between wiping ~/.wine.
Quote: Once you have done all that, you should be able to run EVE with all of the settings maxed out (assuming you have a decent video card of course).
Can anybody confirm that wine still posses the high CPU while application is idle bug? I've got a multi-core CPU at home so it's not a show-stopper for me, but having EVE eat a whole CPU while sitting at the login window or character selection screen is silly. Also, it impacts the function of Eve Voice (causes drops, etc).

It's not linux-specific thingy. Due to lack of FPS cap eve consumes all available resources to render even login screen at highest possilbe fps, as far as i understand.
Also - both recently introduced crashes were fixed. 1.1.27 works flawlessly with the exception of crash on focus gain.

Yeah, it's not a bug at all. Eve is not idle at the login and it's most definitely not a Wine concern. The concern is purely more bull**** joke material that far too many people have fallen for.

directx installation failed with error '-9'. It is suggested that you restart your computer and then run DXsetup.exe located in bin\\directx in your eve folder.
this is the error i recieved and of course i attemped to run dxsetup, but immediately error's out, did i miss something??

The splash screen is displayed, then it vanishes and nothing happens. This is pretty close to this Wine issue except none of the given tips solved the problem for me.
Note that the trial version of Crossover Games led to exactly the same issue.

this may sound stupid, but i've seen that and it was due to an incomplete shortcut. are you going in through /home/(user-name)/.wine/drive_c/progr......./eve/eve.exe??? and launching from there? if that works for you make a new shortcut using a this route ... /home/(user-name)/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe"

You seem to be using an old R300 based Radeon (9500, 9700, 9800) with open source Radeon drivers. These drivers don't fully support GLSL and Opengl 2.0. You can try latest GIT from MESA (read a news about improved GLSL this week but don't know if this affect this card).
Your best option is to try the last usable FGLRX or simply switch to a better AGP card.
Here the status of these open sources drivers : X.org Radeon driver

Edited by: Biakuzolm on 21/08/2009 22:47:47 I've tried it too with my other computer, which has an ATI HD4850 GPU with latest Catalyst drivers.
I was able to enter the game with the trial version of Crossover Games 7.2, but there were 3D issues (no models, black screen in station except GUI). Trying to compile an old Wine ATI patch did not solve the problem.
Tonight I saw the new release of Wine 1.1.28. Little hope. Extremely little though. I deleted all my Crossover Games and Wine installations. I followed again the tutorial from the original post. No error during all the process, sound test in Winecfg is OK. I also used Winetricks to get "Gecko" and "vcrun2005sp1" installed, just in case.
I used wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1280x960 "J:\EVE Online\eve.exe" to run EVE ("J:\EVE Online\eve.exe" is my EVE installation on my real Windows XP drive, I kept a dual boot temporarily. Crossover Games gave the same result using either this XP installation or the .cxgames installation, so I decided to keep only this one).
The EULA is well displayed, I can login, I can reach character selection menu. But when trying to enter EVE world, the loading progress bar gets stuck on "Entering Station" state, and nothing happens. The errors are the following ones:

I really can't understand what to do now. I've probably tried every tip I found on the internet. It's a fresh Linux Mint 7 installation with clean and bleeding edge source for Wine, functionnal fglrx drivers, "Blackbuffer" in user.reg, desktop emulation set to on in Winecfg, and a recent ATI HD4850 GPU. So many people state that they can run EVE through Wine 1.1.27 (or former version) installed with .deb binaries and almost no custom settings with this hardware. Id did not work for me, either "out of the box" or with custom settings (supplemental dlls, modified user.reg, etc.). I did not find any ATI patch corresponding to my issue and for recent Wine versions on WineHQ.
I'm thinking about cutting my veins with my USB keyboard right now.

Edited by: Biakuzolm on 21/08/2009 23:13:48 Sorry for the flood. :/
Just note that disabling shades in main menu settings and setting all graphics to low do not return the same errors when trying to enter the world. Here are the errors I get : http://pastie.org/591083.
Tell me if I should post elsewhere to have help, I really don't want to pollute this stick thread, but it's written in the original post to report here if one has any problem running EVE with this tutorial.

(In fact Linux Mint auto-installed fglrx drivers, I really thought those Catalyst were up to date. I tried to check it but I did not find where it was written in the Catalyst window. Here, I manually installed the Catalyst 9.8 version. It works like a charm. Marry me Xeiyu.)

My first problem is When I install eve and then run it right after its installed it doesn't load the end user agreement page so I can't scroll to the bottom and I am left looking at a black box with a broken scroll bar.
The second problem is when I try to open it eve again, I took it from an older topic because its the same problem:
When i try to run eve through wine, i.e. wine --> programs --> eve i get this error:

another way of upgrading wine and keep it upgraded is adding the winehq apt repository.
I upgraded my wine from 1.0.1 to 1.1.27 via the package manager, by adding the WineHQ APT Repository:

Luckily both the problems you mention here are simple to fix!
1. The issue with scrolling in the EULA is a result of a lack of fonts in the folder ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts.
If you install the Microsoft Core Fonts from the repo, and copy them to the wine folder like this, your problem will be resolved:-
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/* ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts/
2. The issue with loading from the icon is a problem with the icon created by the installer.
The icon is in a file called SOMTHING.desktop, open it with gedit, or another text editor, and delete the "/nsn5f75.tmp" so it just ends as "/temp"
I also recommend changing the Exec= line, so it reads:-
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/jackson/.wine" wine explorer /desktop=EVE,1024x768 "C:\\Program Files\\CCP\\EVE\\eve.exe"
Hope this helps, James.

Ok No joy here. Tried this a couple of different ways now without success. I even tried to install it via Playonlinux (cool app CCP might be able to assist in creating .pol file.)
Basically I get an openGL error. See consolidated error log below.

hi all,
I used to have the splash-screen issue (eve showing splashscreen, but nothing more) a lot after i upgraded from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. Not really sure what changed in the process, but this script will get eve to start again every time:
cd "/home/weary/.wine/drive_c/yourevedirectory" sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -j DROP -p udp --destination-port 53 ; wine ./eve.exe ; sudo iptables -F
Not really sure why it works, but i figured it had to be a timing-issue, because of the suggested cpuload-trick earlier (which did not work for me), and the only network-traffic eve did was some DNS-requests. Somehow blocking those (and re-enabling dns before eve really starts) fixed it.
ps. note, the above lines might disable your local firewall, if you had any. I used a default wine and (closed-source) nvidia installed by ubuntu 9.10. no custom compiles. I did disable all visual effects(compiz), not sure if that mattered.

I've tried all the various bits of advice I can find. I'm using the latest version of wine out of git. I've used wintricks to get the d3dx9_35.dll and d3dx9_36.dll files. I'm running wine with a desktop window. I've updated to the latest version of my NVIDIA drivers. I've tried wine-1.1.23 instead of the latest wine-git.
And, yet, still, every so often I get the "no mapping for 00002746" crash. Sometimes it's minutes in, sometimes I crash every 10 minutes. Sometimes I go for hours without getting it. But I eventually get it. It's very frustrating.
Is there anything else I can do to make EVE stable under Wine?

After Dominion was broken under my Gentoo installation I tried to update my wine. Dependencies were destroying my a bit aged system, so I needed to jump to the actual Kubuntu for this as a fast backup. Compiling a whole system on my computer will take some days, so I ordered a friend to do this on a cluster. Still waiting for the postal package with the DVD...
The actual Kubuntu has a bug in the 64bit variant of libfontsomething so no KDE programs actually started on my system (Intel Dual 6600/64bit). After switching back to a 32bit Kubutu variant everything was okay.
But the mentioned i386 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32-rc8/ is idiotically compiled with the use of 4GB memory so the whole thing is only using 2GB actual memory on your system. This cause problems.
If somebody is just at this point: bake your own kernel with the 64GB memory support enabled. After my backsystem will run again halveway stable I will switch back to a current Gentoo.
I discovered following problem: when undocking from station the whole EVE client freezes for a second, which was something new. I checked if any Windows run machine has the same effect but got a negative, so it's with high propability the new system. For PvP this is absolutly unaccaptable. You will die in that second, or better: get locked and die miserably. Maybe the reason for this is the 2GB limit and access to swapspace. I will update my experience with the new kernel with 64GB enabled and running on a 8GB environment.
Performance on Kubuntu/Ubuntu kernel was way worse than on Gentoo but Gentoo is no easy system. It will bring you lot's of "gifts" you don't want together with extreme performance. I will use it but can't give it as an advice.
But my system performs like if a background task is running under Kubuntu compared to Gentoo. But way easier to setup and maintain.
Thanks for the help so far. -- FREEDOM, PUNK & AUTOCANNONS

This got things moving for me (I was getting the splash-screen-for-a-few-seconds-then-nothing problem). I had heard that starting EVE with no internet connection got things moving and this is exactly what this does (basically you are blocking all access to DNS servers - UDP port 53 - for the duration of the client stat up). This should go in the top post, it has fixed this issue for me on my desktop (running Ubuntu 9.10) as well as my laptop (running Gentoo).

Looking for some help on this guide. I am following the guide above and had Eve previously somewhat working but frequently crashing. The suggestion was made via the ingame linux channel to try this guide. I'm using Karmic 9.10. I uninstalled the previous version of wine and ran through this guide. All seems to go smoothly until step 8. At step 8 when I make install, it just flies, really way to fast to be doing anything of significance. When I try to cd ~/.wine after the install I get the message:
doug@doug-desktop:~/wine-git$ cd ~/.wine
bash: cd: /home/doug/.wine: Permission denied
I tried chown and chmod on that directory with apparent success, meaning no error messages, but still get that error when I try to get into the directory. When I run winecfg I get a similar message:
wine: chdir to /home/doug/.wine
: Permission denied
I'm fairly new to ubuntu and linux but errors such as this in the past I've had success with the chown and/or the chmod commands, but this time I've had no such luck. The speed at which it installed makes me think that something is missing. When I run: dir ~/.wine I get the following:
dosdevices drive_c system.reg userdef.reg user.reg
Any ideas you have would be helpful.

This seems to happen about 90% of the time, the other 10% of the time the game will play well for <5 minutes and I get the same error and the framerate drops from really good to less than 1 per second before I crash within 30 seconds. I resolved this by simply turning off the audio in game.

Originally by: Persephone 66 I just tried the fix in the OP and now I just get the splash screen and Eve just shuts down. :(
Kubuntu 9.04 Dell inspiron 1420 1 GB Ram Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS
I had that problem as well. Eve would start once, then never again unless I destroyed the settings folder. Then it would start once and not again. Following a different thread on these forums, named ... (checking...)
my guide for Eve in Ubuntu 9.04
and setting the prefs.ini as suggested there solved my problem.
I'm sure there's a possibility that other factors are at work on any individual's distribution, just this sounds similar to a problem I just fixed.

The only error I get is an "unable to elevate" error... I've tried patching wine, still have same error.
I'm running LinuxMint8x64, with a q6600 processor and a Nvid Geforce8600 gts card. I'm running on about 7GB of ram, and have all my proprietary drivers installed.
Eve was working fine before I re-installed LM8. The only reason I'm peeved is because I've paid for about 5 months subscr, and I've been unable to play for over 2 weeks now.
Why can't the dev's just offer a .deb net-based pre-installer?
Wine-doors hasn't helped, and there's nothing available through PlayOnLinux... I'm so frustrated by this.

Top google hit is http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=544907 which is very old but there is someone that is using 64bit Linux.
Any chance you have installed 64bit version of LM8? There is fixes around for making Wine happy on 64bit OSes.

I had this problem too. Make sure your WINE configuration is set to emulate Windows XP. I had mine set to Windows Vista. When I changed it to Windows XP this error went away.

On OP:
May I suggest you switch numbers
7 & 8; running winecfg will make the ~/.wine directory, and the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ required for step 7. I do no believe the audio is dependent of the video drivers. May save some people some hassle who do a fresh install of wine.
btw, holyswhit, that make takes forever.

I just switched to linux (ubuntu 10.4) about a week ago... \o/ awesome, fps went from 60 to 145. I installed the newest version of wine 1.2-rc3.I have EVE installed and functioning with some work arounds (arial.ttf, jukebox folder renamed). Wine is running with no decorations, Windows xp.
The only thing that happens when I play is it will randomly crash for no reason. My account remains online (confirmed via other players on TS when it happends, ship still in space, local and With a popup that says somethign about visit winehq and look for a solution... that I can find. Though I have narrowed it down to if I have something on the workspace and its window pops up, and when most any window pops up in other workspaces.
Does the orignal post still apply?
I found some topics about focus with what looks like scripts (wouldn't know how to run them, or where they are to be installed, or if its relevant)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21257 listed script http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17410
I also don't have any other resolutions other tha max on my monitors (can someone point me to a setup link, think it has more to do with my nvidia gtx 250 cards and config that anything, current driver 195, saw the link for the beta 250, still not 100% if I can apply that or not)

Edited by: Satori Yakamura on 16/09/2010 22:49:40 Iam using EVE under Ubuntu 10.04 with Nivida Drivers. the jukebox problem still exists it looks like it wants to load an mp3 Codec that wine doesn't find..*maybe* but renaming it works.
I only have some crashes that occurs sometimes when iam interacting with other running programms on the second screen.
Wine itself utilize ALSA or OSS Sound Systems which results that pulseaudio is not able to play other "audio" but this might be fixed by wine-team sometime...
So be shure to set ALSA or OSS sound in winecfg and Windows XP Emulation as Windows 7 results in crashes after the splash screen.

Have the same problem when I load EVE.. just at the end of character loading, it often freeze the client and if I don't kill it with a RS232 or SSH terminal in the next 15 secondes, the whole PC crash.
Here the trick to get arround of this: 1>Bring your other computer on (can be a laptop, a 8086 or anything you can TTYS/SSH to your PC) 2>run EVE 3>Type on terminal : ps -A | grep ExeFile.exe and press ENTER 4>type "kill " end enter the pid of the good ExeFile.exe (the one with less time if you are multi-accounting, IE: kill 32244) But don't press ENTER 5>LogIn, choose your character... 6>If the loading bar stop moving or the screen hang for more than 5 seconds, go to next point, else go to 9 7>Press ENTER on the terminal 8>Go to 2 9>Enjoy EVE
I have this problem only with ATI FGLRX. With MESA R600c or r600g I don't have this problem but they miss S3TC support.

I had same issue than other report, a random freeze in the game and I tried all your fix without success. But finally I find a way to run Eve by turning off sound in eve interface.
It's not optimal but a least I can play with all graphic settings in high and 1920 without any bugs.
Thanks again.

Use only WINE. It does not need more than the latest stable version of WINE which is 1.2. Anything else you use is more likely to introduce new bugs than to help with running EVE. --

Try these :
* Delete or rename the jukebox folder * Disable sound * Disable ntpd or add -q to only have it update on boot * Don't use any cpu frequency governor other than performance * Don't use 24 bit color w/ 8 bit alpha

I had this too, using HD4800. If you don't mind using proprietary drivers, do this - System->Administration->Additional Drivers, then install video card drivers. Solved the problem for me.
You also may want to install beta Wine 1.3 (from winehq.com), since 1.2 might lock up the client as it did for me.

I'm still running after 1.4.2, even though I had to manually download the patch and apply it. Make sure that you've grabbed the following: winetricks vcrun2005 winetricks vcrun2005sp1 winetricks vcrun2008 winetricks corefonts
The "corefonts" one is what resolved the blank/black screens for me.

msvcp80.dll is part of the "Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" Package. If it's not installed on your wine system, you can install it with winetricks: winetricks vcrun2005 winetricks vcrun2005sp1
... or you download it from source: vcr2005 vcr2005sp1 vcr2005sp1 security update

There's a post up on appdb about the problem. I came across it searching for the same issue, since I have it here as well: 1.3.27 is broken, but downgrading to 1.3.26 doesn't help (nor does 'winetricks vcrun2005'). Maybe try 1.3.25? Another thread here suggests it works on a clean compile/install.
Here's hoping it gets fixed soon.
