hi - so, I've been on a bit of a break and recently returned but no one I know is still playing and I was wondering about giving FW a go. I tried it when it was first launched and found it fun but sort of pointless and was wondering if the recent changes I read about had made it more fun or given it more of a purpose?
thanks! |

Let's see, the changes to faction war since it first launched that are in effect today...
1. Minimum requirement for joining the militia was removed.
Positive Effects : Possibly more people in the militia than there would of been, even if it is mostly useless cannon fodder.
Negative Effects : It's now a complete doddle to stick spies in the enemy militia, and they won't look so out of place among all the other absolutely raw noobs that have barely just learned how to press the undock button.
Militia chat can sometimes look a bit like the rookie help channel.
2. Stations in a militia conquered system will now deny docking to opposing militias.
Positive Effects : There's a bit more at stake now.
Negative Effects :
How does it make sense that we can dock anywhere in the enemy militias highsec, but god forbid they capture some backwater lowsec system?
Strategically, this gives militia space pirates an advantage as this whole system doesnt affect them, and they were already better pvp's than half the militia people they run around ganking.
3. Militia can purchase upgrades to systems with stations between level 1 to 5, which have the effect of cheaper station facilities and lower market fees.
Positive Effect : It's an incentive I guess.
Negative Effect :
Militia pays for it, the neutrals get all the bonuses too.
Neutrals using up all the research / manufacturing slots in such systems for their own gain with no intention of distributing to the militia.
4. Capturing plexes gives considerable loyalty point bonuses now.
Positive Effects : Gives more inventive to capture plexes.
Negative Effects :
Still doesn't change the fact that plexes are ******* boring, generally its you and/or a handful of friends sitting on your hands staring at a timer for 10/15/20 minutes. This is probably one of the biggest problems with faction war as its the central part of the whole system for conquest.
They get farmed by peoples with no interest in faction war, who not only wouldn't **** on you if you were on fire but would actually happily see you get killed so they don't have to share the loyalty points.
Everyone just takes small fast ships to any size plex so they can just speedtank and ignore the npc's altogether.
---
So yeah pretty much swings and roundabouts, faction war is a little better but far from perfect, I have some suggestions as to what would actually help but this post is long enough already. |

Recently returned to game as well and to FW. Although I am far from an experienced FW player, it appears that the recent changes have injected some purpose. Folks are actively fighting over system occupancy. I assume that the renewed interest in this has to do with the consequence of losing docking rights and also that LP is worth much more if you are dominating the war zone.
Just an impression, but there seems to be more of a sense of purpose among the militia than about a year ago. That said, I think that the corps involved in FW had a clear sense of purpose before; it just seems to be more aligned to a common cause that is tangible (introduction of alliances may have helped here too).
I would be interested in the perspective of some long-term FW players as well. |

Related question - are there any guides for faction warfare? Despite few years in the game I know nothing about this activity. |
