So I was happily going on using my 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB HDD, when one day (today) it decided not to work
HDD powers up, no unhealthy noises or anything, computer recognises that there's something there by the way it sits at 'Detecting IDE Drives...' for over a minute before eventually giving up
I tried changing the cable and even putting the HD in another computer but same thing happens. Kind of annoying since that drive was where I stored everything, inc some stuff I've been working on which is quite important.
I found this: http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recovery-seagate-barracuda-7200-11.htm which seems to detail the problem quite well, but I really don't want to have to send my HD off unless I REALLY have to and was wondering if there was anything else I could do to get my data back?

Try this.
Failing that, a company such as http://www.datatrack-labs.com would be able to disassemble and clean everything up, but for a fairly hefty price. Depends on how important the data is I guess.

I'm fairly sure the disk itself is fine, there's just the problem with the firmware that's stopping it even being recognised
I read up somewhere that you could swap out the logic board which might fix it, which would mean buying the same HD again and swapping the parts over, which would be MUCH cheaper than sending the thing off but I've not done anything like that before

I just checked their website, this looks promising:
"8. Free Data Recovery Terms and Conditions.
8.1 Free Data Recovery is only available to hard driveÆs affected by the firmware fault which causes the hard drive to be detected as LBA 0. The FREE data recovery is only available to hard drives from the DiamondMax 22, Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 SATA range."
only catch is they'd keep the HD and I'd have to buy a replacement HD from them for the data, but it beats paying in excess of ú200 anyways.

Lots of people, including geeks dont backup stuff like photos, documents that are important. I use an external USB hard disk and use robocopy to do a differential backup of all my important files. So rather than doing an entire copy every time it syncs the backup with the source. Only adding new files and also deleting files from the backup that are no longer present in the source.
Example batch file for doing my docs directory:-
robocopy.exe "D:\docs" "E:\backup\docs" /E /ZB /COPY:DATSOU /R:2 /W:1 /NP /MIR
You get robocopy from Windows Resource Kit
Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

way back in the early days(1988-1996) we used to swap out the logic boards on drives that had an issue with starting up or being recognised. in most cases it was good enough fudge to get the customers data off the knackered drive. then put the board back and RMA it for a new one. got a lot of customers out of such sticky (i got no backup situations). it can still be done, but you really must have identicle drives(logic board/media) to do.
1TB drives are now ú55 on ebuyer atm so are not to bad for using as archive purposes and the DRAGO expandable storage solution is very good option for the price.

I looked into this but couldn't find the drive for sale anyway, looks like it's been discontinued completely
not suprising really seeing how common this problem is: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/16/barracuda_failure_plague/
Quote: "Seagate 1TB Barracuda drives are failing at an alarming rate, with users complaining of a plague of such failures spreading across the globe.
Barracuda 7200.11 drives made in Thailand (ref: ST31000340AS with firmware level SD15) are failing at boot time with a firmware error that is said to lock the drive up and render it inoperable.
Users seem convinced, energetically so in some cases, that the incidence of such drive failures is far higher than the statistically low incidence of failures to be expected with any drive."
so yes be wary when buying seagate

I'm glad i bought my Samsung 1tb drive Though for the first couple of months i'm keeping a close eye on it and keeping all of the brunt of my data on it mirrored on a second, smaller drive. I remembered hearing bad things about Seagate's 1tb drives but couldnt remember which ones, also i know from past experience that Maxtor is bad juju.
I would have gone for a Western Digital one if they were in stock but i needed the disk in a hurry _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

hmm... this is rather bad, since Seagate has (or at leas it had) the reputation of having rock-solid reliable hard drives.
/me looks at his UDMA66 8gb seagate HD still in mint condition ---

Well I've looked around more and looks like there's a way to do it yourself (without sending it off to data centres)
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807
catch is it's quite complicated and I've never done anything like it before BUT if it works it'l fix the drive and only cost me ú20-ú30 or so
figure I might as well try it, wish me luck!

Good Luck!
If it fails to work you can always get an old drive case that still works and transfer the platters to that one. Yes it's fiddly, but it can be done without a clean room and lab.

I doubt it, most HDDs are super reliable (like only 1-2% fail in the first year) but for these models of seagate drives, due to that little bug, that's said to be anything up to 40%
