I was thinking. We have those flouting billboards in space. Have the Dev's ever considered contracts with company's like Spice, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper promoting their product via in-game billboards that would be updated every update interval with these advertisements.
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression Battlefield 2142 did this with their game? Is place actual RL advertisements in the maps. But anyway, my point is, this could really save EVE some money developer wise and player wise granted that the companys want this. After all, a lot of people play EVE, I'm sure companys would like to promote their stuff through something people see on often occasion.
Am I insane or does this sound like a decent idea anyway?

I'd be ok with ads that were EVE related, but anything outside of EVE like Coca Cola appearing on the billboards would detract from the game, in my opinion.

They could write it into the backstory, say someone found an ancient recipe for coke and started manufacturing it to compete against quaff or something.

things like that are pk in a contemporary setting, but putting them in games that would an anachronism is just bad.

LOL, I remember playing Battlefield 2142 for the first time, spawning on some russian winter-themed map and running into a "Core 2 Duo" billboard. LOL.
Joking aside, I support this idea.
Some people might say that this would break the immersion, remind people of real life and what not...
To them I say: It is already impossible to roleplay in EVE, or be truly immersed. Nobody tries. Nobody cares. I cared, tried, and you know what happened? I was met with ridicule. The other players laughed at my naive attempts and the huge holes in the EVE faction lore stopped me in my tracks anyway.
So don't talk to me about immersion because I know you would be lying.
Let's just admit that we don't RP, ever, and invite the real world in here so we can make a profit off it. That would be the true spirit of EVE.

I'm under the impression that advertisers prefer to target their ads to specific national populations, e.g. Finns or Canadians or New Yorkers.
Obviously there are some exceptiosn, such as Coca Cola, Intel and so forth, which might be willing to invest some money into advertizing to "EVE Online players", but not a lot.
And yes, it would be immersion breaking.
Currently there's little immersion to begin with, but once we get WIS (and we will get it - remember that CCP owns the World of Darkness, and will want us to playtest their new graphics engine befre they launch the Vampire/Werewolf/stuff MMORPG that the license allows them to launch) that will change.

If you ever played a game called Planetside, they did this to help offset the cost of hardware fees or something and they found everyone ended up blocking the sites from their firewalls.
Now, if it was implemented correctly, as items would appear to be part of the game, then sure, why not. But if they just tack on Real Life ads in their current form in a box floating in space then I say NO WAY! A very good Artist can take a real life product and put it into the EVE Universe, do that and I would say Hell why not!
What it also allowed you to do in Planetside was pay for your stuff to be piped though the in-game ad window. IF CCP allowed this as part of an ISK SINK or hell even real life funding, like, buy two months worth of ad space for $40 and get two months subscription free (GTC cost 34.99, so the 2 month ad costs $5.01)
Overall I'd vote no way in hell for real life ads, I'd vote, Maybe for EVE Developed versions of real life products, and "YES!" to an big ass ad billboard people can place ads on for a ISK fee.

Thats the most absurd statement I have ever heard. It's not going to be a traumatic experience once you start seeing some ad from Stride gum. So your telling me people are going to quit??? You are seeing RL ads on a billboard or something somewhere-- not having ur EVE life inbox spammed or having some employee from pepsi scamming jita trying to sell RL products to you. God..some people are just so conservative here lol.

I agree with this. I don't think this will severely screw with the player's ability to play or interrupt gameplay in any fasion, this is just opening up to company's that are interested promoting their product through games (like Dr. Pepper, Stride, Old Spice and etc.) and it will save us some subscription fees or pay off server improvements etc.

You are insane. Do you really think CCP would pass anything more than a token saving on to their customers?
If you end up bringing coke adverts into eve then i will pod you mercilessly over and over again.
There are many ways to improve outside revenue, some of which CCP are already exploring and i'd be happy to see small businesses like cyberdog or other sci-fi oriented companies play a role but for the love of god don't let the multinationals in.
As a side note the negative effects of getting coke advertising wrong in a heavily networked environment like eve mean that an anti coke sentiment or campaign can spread easily through the playerbase and do more harm than good. _________________________________________________ Lifeboat ----> + Human |

There's no point. CCP already makes enough profit and as someone else said, they may lose subscribers because of in-game ads. Thus they'd increase their revenue for a few quarters before seeing it tank. Less subscribers makes the ads worth less and so fewer ads will be placed but you've already lost subscribers and so you're losing money again.

those little billboards in space are only visible on the off chance that my camera is pointing that direction. i hardly ever see them. no company would pay CCP to advertise on those.

Not many here may be familiar with Anarchy Online (Funcom) but it was an incredible game that only Eve seems to match in complexity and customization with a robust and quasi-decentralized market.
One of the only reasons I eve got hooked to that game for 3-4 years was the free play option they offered for the classic game with in game advertising. It was not very obtrusive. Several ads were EXTREMELY well designed and very funny, and overall improved the game. I can tell you now I spend zero moments looking at the billboards in this game because of their generic and boring nature.
Granted I upgraded to a paying subscription to enjoy the expansion content but the principle was a sound one. Attract new players with free or subsidized accounts via in-game advertisement.
I for one support the OP's suggestion and think it should be considered with the option to disable it. Really, offer $1/month of the subscription price and 99% of the people whining now would sign up in an instant.

I avoid advertising any way I can. I don't watch TV, I block web ads, I listen to my own audio files and CDs instead of the radio.
I would not subject myself to people pushing things I don't need to save even the entire subscription cost. Come on. It's less than 50 cents American a day.
And you would happily allow advertising to be injected into your skull to save just a buck or two a month? Not just no, but Hell No. ---- Suddenly Ninjas Blog: My Loot, Your Tears
