Edited by: Lachesis VII on 14/07/2009 00:21:09 So, I figured it was time to unveil a project I've been working on for the last few weeks in my spare time.
I think we can all agree that Ombey's and Dotlan's maps are great, packed full of hard info, and are quite useful for many things. However, one thing I've never been able to adequately use them for is tactical navigation and planning roams. While they're not hard to read, they're not exactly laid out in a logical, hierarchical fashion, and the constant region jumps across pages complicate things, especially when it comes to finding easy loops, shortcuts, and workarounds. Even Ombey's OGLE map is a bit convoluted.
To that end, I've decided to make a pirate's roaming map. It will cover every low security system in EVE, even those in pockets, along with every high security system that borders low-sec, on one contiguous map, with all systems organized in as close to a linear, logical fashion as possible. Main pipes and loops will be immediately apparent and easy to follow.
As of now I'm planning on including only limited info about each system. Why? Because a roaming pirate doesn't care too much about these things. Mostly, I plan on indicating known hotspots, chokepoints, dead ends, etc, as well as whether or not a system is devoid of stations. I'd also like to call out the home systems of any major pirate alliance or corporation, though my knowledge base on this only really extends as far as the area around Mara and the area around Amamake (to some extent).
So, here's what I've got so far. I apologize for it being largely unreadable, to post a zoomed in version of the full map wouldn't be acceptable right now. I'm making the map using some basic flowchart software, and will be converting it to a vector graphics format (PDF or SVG) prior to final release.
http://photos.napalm.net/clubsi/piratemapbeta04.gif
To illustrate what the map looks like close up, here's a zoomed in sample from a very early version (my first day of work on the map, actually).
http://photos.napalm.net/clubsi/PirateMapBeta02.gif
As of now, I have virtually all of lowsec charted; I'm just wrapping up the deep southern regions. After that, I need to pretty it up in Illustrator, work on the typography, and so forth. I know the current zoomed version I'm posting here is ugly; remember it's a beta. :)
What I'd like from the EVE-O community, if possible, is feedback, ideas, and so forth. Also, if the rest of you piratey types would like to have your corp featured on the map, feel free to post a response with corp name and your home system.
Anyway, the final goal is for this to be a very lightweight, easy to use tool, that will hopefully illustrate some system relationships that haven't been immediately apparent before, and encourage longer-range roams.
That's it, and thanks!

Looks ok, but I doubt I'll use it.
The main reason is that as a lowsec pirate, I pretty much stay in the same area and after a few weeks you get to know the area pretty well. I'm fortunately in the position that we only need to roam 3 or 4 systems to get fights. (Oh how many planned 0.0 roams have planned and never made it the 6 jumps out because we have been getting epic fights along the way)

Lana, I agree with what you say. I know my home very well. That's one reason why I don't plan on including much in the way of system specifics; pirates know their homes quite well.
I originally started making this map because my corp relocated, and I wanted to get familiar with the environs. Of course, things snowballed.
That said, my corp does like to roam; we'll go 30-40 jumps out sometimes, just for the hell of it. I know our corp isn't alone in this. Also, this kind of map should be good for quickly learning the local configuration after a move, of vacation, etc, etc.

I personally like this map. It lays it out flat and in a very simple way to understand what systems routes (and alternatives) are availble. I try to do this same thing in my head whenever I look at the map in game and I can only theorize so far.
So in short - NICE JOB!

There will need to be a way to zoom us to a part of the map.
For example, I like to stay in my home area but sometimes there are wormholes to far away lowsec -- strange territory where we could go cause a ruckus for a day if we knew a little about the place. But I need to be able to type in a system name and have it zoom me to that part of the map.
Otherwise it will take forever to find the sector just by scrolling around a giant JPG image.

Edited by: Lachesis VII on 14/07/2009 21:09:32 The final product should be a .rar or .zip containing the following:
1) A contiguous PDF file of the entire map (which should be searchable by text string). 2) A paginated PDF for easy printing on 8.5 x 11 or A4, should one desire to do so 3) A lightweight GIF or PNG for in browser viewing without the draw time of a PDF.

looks good, definitely can see the use in it. Nothing more frustrating with the strategic map than having to constantly flip back and forth when we roam.
Back when we lived in wormhole space this was an eternal pain in the ass.

Made a fair amount of progress today.
This version encompasses about 99% of lowsec systems in the game.

Obviously zoomed out.
I'll consider posting a full-scale GIF or PNG while I work on the nice vector version.

Looks nice, I would definately use it. When I get my yarr on and go for a short roam, it's usually a long roadtrip through multiple regions. This could help with nailing down some nice long pipes that I missed in the map window when I just hit "set destination" button somewhere that's far out and has lots of lowsec before it.

I realize I said I wouldn't actually use this, but another feature you might like to look at in including 0.0 entry points. Always good to know where they are even if your not planing on going in to nullsec.

No worries Lana, I appreciate any feedback. All lowsec 0.0 entries are included, as are a few high-sec 0.0 entries that are near lowsec (for example, the jump into Providence from Dital, which is the closest 0.0 access to Amamake). They're hard to see, but they're the blue squares on the zoomed out map.
I've also called out various quick shortcuts through highsec to disparate regions of the map. There are a few boxes that say something along the lines of "Highsec shortcut to system x, 7 jumps", scattered across the map. In a few areas where there are short highsec routes between lowsec systems that are near eachother on the map, I've actually included all of the systems in the route. I made the map with piracy in mind, obviously, but anti-pies or FW guys who are roaming might appreciate having their attention called to a quick shortcut through highsec.
The other thing I'm struggling with is the issue of highsec dead ends, etc. Obviously not all the highsec that abuts lowsec actually goes anywhere, and I'm not sure its worth differentiating between the two. The way I see it, the highsec info is useful for a few things, namely gatecamping and avoiding jumping into a highsec system on accident when in an unfamiliar part of space. That said, its not like people roam 20 jumps to set up a gatecamp. I figure anyone interested in gatecamping will know their local area well enough to know which gates are worth camping and which ones aren't.

Being a ex-pirate I could see a use for this. It was always a little time consuming finding a good low sec route to take the gang on a roam, this takes that away.. I likes it, adding it to my eve maps collections!! Prop Lachesis and tell Spec I still love him . -----------------------------------------------

Nice job! Will definitely be open during gang/solo roams. I'm not an FC, but I like to know where I am and what's around us. As someone else said, will be nice for jumping through wormholes into strange low-sec areas to see what's around.

I printed out all of the maps and use them regularly, EXCEPT the OGLE map.. Its just to large to easily be printed.. I do use the factionwar ones from time to time for piracy though...
I'd give feedback too, but im pretty sure the problem with it is that its just covering too much stuff.

Firstly, nice!
a few things I'd like to see (with very simple text or symbols)
1. Number of belts in system 2. Number of stations and station services (only rep and clone really needed) 3. Low sec entry high-secs should have number of jumps to nearest trade hub 4. Major and minor (trade) corridors should be marked
All this would make it easier to find targets >:) yarr

Lets see here.
1 & 2. I may do this, if I can find a way to do it elegantly. Right now I was just going to do stations/no stations, and leave belts out of it, but if I can develop a nice icon system once I start working on it in illustrator, I'll see what I can do.
3. I'm ahead of you on this one; though I'm not going to do it for all entry points (since some of them are nowhere near a trade hub).
4. This would be very easy to mark; thing is, I don't know where all of these are, and need community feedback and info on this kind of thing.
I also need community info on the major PVP hubs. I know of:
Amamake Egghelende Mara Old Man Star Tama and a few other minor ones, but thats only because thats where I often hang out. Obviously there are others.
I also know where a few of the larger pirate corps live, but not all of them. Community info on that would be great, as well.
