Edited by: Whitehound on 10/07/2009 09:22:53 I declare this to be the official TDF 2009 thread, and that Lance is going to win it ...
For some good information see this link. The official web site is here.
The TDF can be viewed live on the web but is under the constant threat of copyright violation. These two web sites - p2p4u.net & p2pstation.net - seem to have the best lawyers and continue to stream various TV stations into the web. Use them at your own risk.

Cycling, if it is not dominated by drugs, is probably the most intense sport out there. The human heart pumps blood with 180-190 beats per minute through the body and over several hours. There is no day where not one of the cyclists falls of a bike and dislocates or breaks a bone. Already on the second day of the tour did a cyclist start a fist fight on his bike. When was the last time you saw a fist fight in a sport? Was it in boxing? And some cyclists went down the wrong road. Show me a sport where you get this much tragedy and I will watch it. But is it for puffs? I do not know. -- "Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." - Ace Rimmer |

More tragedy! I love it!! I want to see you riding a bike for 200km and then start a fight. You probably drop of your bike after 50km and fight for your life in an ambulance. Speaking of Lance, he is going to win it!! -- "Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." - Ace Rimmer |

Going to be a good tour this year, so far there has been some drama already, Cadel Evans! His team really let him down in the Team timetrial. Astana have the top places tied up at the moment, but I reckon in fighting has the possibility of derailing them. Personally I'd like to see the entire team get behind Contador, Lance has had his glory, all 7 of them. Time for the younger riders to make their mark imo. I reckon we'll see the Astana team pull Contador over the Pyrenees let him defend and save energy in these mountain stages, possibly 1 or 2 attacks depending on who gets out in front, but the real battle will be in the last weekend imo, Mt. Ventoux and the time trial on the sunday will mean that if people have conserved energy they can possibly take minutes out of any rivals, it will come down to the last few days I'm sure this year
Oh and sorry for Rabobank, absolute disaster this year!

It is not about glory! This is exactly what some of the younger ones go for. Instead, it is about experience. If Lance gets beaten then that is o.k., but there is nothing wrong with an old, experienced cyclist showing the younger ones how it is done. It gives the younger cyclists something to look forward to in their careers and when they see how some one older can continue to win the TDF. Cyclists like Jan Ulrich for example win it once and then disappeared in a cloud of doping accusations. Where is the glory there? Lance has yet to win it again. And he lets the younger ones have revenge on him! If they manage to beat him ...

Cycling has such attrition on its riders. They race for hundreds of miles over days that puts relentless pressure on their hearts. A lot of them die in their forties. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

Edited by: Whitehound on 10/07/2009 14:09:45 There are worse ways to die. I had to see how an old woman was entered into a hospital and whose family did not know how to take care of her once she was too old to get out of bed. When they finally brought her into the hospital was half of her body open and sore flesh. I was a PC technician at the time and had to scan the pictures of her into the computer for evidence. Could you define a lot because I am having a hard time finding anything that supports your claim.
I can find a larger list of professional wrestlers that died too young.

Cycling is for junkies, I'm sorry but it's the best sport in the world for a "how to beat drug tests and win" and ignore the obvious.
A shame really because if the sport was clean it would be the pinnacle of endurance and athletiscism, but it isn't.
Sad thing is I will still watch it.

Oh I agree, the thing is Lance had 4 years out, and comes straight back into the top team there is a lot of speculation behind who the team will focus on, imo it's not right to simply say Lance! without giving the younger riders a chance, I'm rooting for Lance as much as the next guy but to automatically assume he's the leader and all the other should focus on supporting him, I just feel it's a bit unfair to the other riders. But as you say at the end of the day they can attack him and they can go and win stages, also I guess you habe to look at money, Lance winning for Astana will reap more money I guess in terms of sponsorships.

Today the puffs have to climb three mountains and with the first one being the highest already. There will be a lot of puffs arriving in separate groups and bigger time gaps at the finish. The descents will be fun to watch, when the puffs go 80km-90km down the mountains.
What kind of tyres are they now using? Yesterday did one puff, blow two tyres on his descent and still managed to control his bike. Does anyone know? -- "Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." - Ace Rimmer |

Just to let you know that they also look at the red blood cells concentraions. Blood doping does not require any drugs and is one of the more effective ways to increase performance because you significantly increase oxygen carying capapcity.
EDIT: To be clear there are some drugs that mimic blood doping results and those can be tested for also.

Don't forget that the lab that's analysing all these samples (and there are thousands of them) needs time to do so, usually results from the first few days won't be available for atleast a week or so. Doping usually isn't found early on as a result, unless the person in question was caught before the Tour even started. (because they're checked on regularly while training or at home)

Today the race was boring. They were fast, probably very fast, but nothing really happened. I suppose they just all wanted to get started, get over the first mountains and then decide on a tactic. -- "Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." - Ace Rimmer |

Yea todays stage was a real shame. Ive always thought that the Aspan and the Tourmalet are some of greatst climbs to be had in the pyrenees but the way the stage was setup this year neautered them, the 70km decent to the finish made anything done on eather of these two climbs pointless in the GC. Anyway at least the breakaway managed to win today. Anyway alps should be very interesting this year even if it is at the expense of the pyrenees. My favorite for the yellow jersy Andy Schleck blowing everyone up and taking the race on Mont Ventoux, but im not so sure as to put any money on it the feild is just two strong this year.

Yeah, it is hard to imagine why they would ruin good mountain stages such as that. I understand they want to try to negate the pure climbers, but those little light weight guys are going to get their damn legs broke in that super long time trial coming up anyway.

Hmm, somewhat. Europe has a rather easy attitude toward drugs and has for a long time. The wrench in the works is when sponsors get involved as that is when cyclings pocket book takes a hit. Even though a famous (with the fans) rider gets tossed for drugs, the fans still love him. Such as when Richard Virenque went through his drug period/bust. French fans don't care when French riders test hot, as long as they cry a lot as they cross a finish line.
I really can't believe the tolerance of the Armstrong guy. He is the most drug tested athlete in the history of all sport. The scrutineers have tried every test under the sun and they have nothing. He gives them too much, I would be unable to put up with that.

Cycleing is awesome.
However I'd be more intrested in watching it if the contestents were tattooed young ladies wearing hot pants and halter tops, peddleing around in skates and knocking each other into parked cars and mail boxes. And there should be some sort of ball in play.
That would be awesome...
Anyways TDF is still good if you catch the fun stuff on youtube. Anyone getting through the entire race is an achievment all on its own, winning is pretty much awe inspireing.

If a 'mountain' has a road over it, they're aren't exactly, steep, dangerous and mountain climbers destination are they.

The fact that there's a road running over it doesn't mean the rest of it isn't steep. There are plenty of descents where you really do not want to miss a turn, or they can sc**** you off some rocks 400 meters down the sheer cliffside.
