When I grouped my weapons, their ammo capacity went down.
I'm using light railguns, and individually every railgun holds 200 charges, which means I need to reload once before the start of the mission, and then I'm good.
When I grouped two railguns, they can only hold 40 charges per rail gun (so 80 total, enough for 40 shots), which means I have to reload several times during a mission, sometimes mid-combat.
Why did the ammo capacity go down?

Ammo capacity doesn't change. If it was 200 ungrouped, it is 200 grouped.
As the above poster indicated, perhaps you didn't have enough ammo in your cargohold to full load all the guns?

Plenty. Over 2000 units, so ammo availability is not a problem.
I tried dragging the ammo to the group in the "normal view", and also in the ship fitment view, but nothing really helped. - Your good Doctor. |

By the way when it says "200" on the group, that means every weapon in the group has 200. I hope you are not dividing that number by the number of weapons in the group.

I thought it was probably this too, but hybrid charges are all the same size according to the item database.

While holding shift drag unloaded weapons on top of each other in the fitting screen. Can be done docked or undocked.

If you notice the little white right pointing triangle > near the bottom of the cap display, that's the options menu. You can right-click that to enter or leave grouping mode, or to lock/un-lock the buttons to move them around, etc.
The overview has a similar > for menu options.
As an above poster pointed out, the fitting window works too for grouping, and shift-drag (I think the buttons need to be unlocked for that one though, which is the default)

btw i suggest to use the fitting screen version of grouping, particularly for when u want ur guns to fire in a row on a the larger ships :P
heres what i mean: if u use the HUD to do it u might mix up guns so that when u fire u get something like: 13421432 whereas if u use the fitting screen ur guaranteed to get 11223344 and so firing guns looks nice ^^ ======= Homeworld Hamachi Network

You can stack weapons? So cool!
So what limits weapon stacking then? CPU and Power?

Weapon grouping is just an extension of a game feature to reduce lag from having a lot of objects on screen. If you fire more than one weapon within a small amount of time at the same target, those shots are automatically grouped.
Manually grouping of weapons just does the same thing, but allows you to press just one button to fire your weapons at the same target at the same time.
I don't recommend grouping all your weapons to a single button, but if you always fire 2 weapons per target, it make sense to make 2 weapon groupings.
The only limit on weapon grouping is that the weapon be a turret or missile launcher of the same type.

And they have to be the exact same type. If it's got a name, they all have to have the same name, eg they all have to be Malkuth Heavy Launchers.

It's a matter of judging what level of overkill you can get on the targets you're blatting.
If grouping all your weapons together will never or only rarely one-shot your targets, then you should group all your weapons together as you want to be firing at one target at a time. When you reach a point where half your weapons will often one-shot a target, it's worth splitting them into two groups and engaging two targets at once, so you're not wasting shot timers on a target that's already dead. Similarly once 1/3 of your max volley is enought to overkill a target, split 'em into 3.
It's bad tactics to engage more targets than you can kill in a single volley, unless you can kill less than one (when you should engage just one), since spreading your damage out means that each enemy is firing back at you for longer. If you're forced to do it by the engagement ranges of your weapons, then you need to rethink your fit.
edit: removed a bit of quote that wasn't necessary.
