I must admit, after going through the Hulk gank topics on this forum, the sheer amount of tearflow has me wanting to eventually get involved in it all.
Now my question is, can a 1.6m SP new guy train up for this? I figure I'd be flying a Raven to do the ganks, since I hear they do a very good job of it. I'm not exactly sure what skills to go about training though. All I know is that the Hulk has to die in a few volleys before CONCORD has their way with me. I'm not exactly all knowing on DPS type skills yet, as I've mainly been focusing on Nav and Learning stuff at this point. I've been flying Minnie Frigs up to this point too, so I figure a racial jump is in order as well.
Any guiding advice for me? I figure I'll either be pointed in the right direction or laughed off the forums.

Not a good idea. Hulks have fairly good tanks, most suicide ganks are done in groups with cheap Destroyers / Cruisers.
Stick to what you are doing, do NOT crosstrain so early unless you despise Minmatar ships (which you have no reason to, they're awesome) as you need to focus your SP training this early.
Train for a Thrasher and ask the people doing all the Hulk killing if they want an extra person on the kills. Or go suicide the T1 Barges in Ruptures, if you must. ___________________

This is an outrage!
Do not teach this new person criminal actions!
New guy - you should train for a Retriever, and start mining - make your money the legit way.
Don't let them talk you into a life of crime - you will lower your security status and can't even come in Empire then will be banned to areas like the pirate swamps of Decon near Balle.

Edited by: Alderon Mizuchi on 20/06/2009 16:06:34 Subspace, you sound like the type of person I'm out to gank in the first place. And until I'm suicide ganking, I'll keep myself busy pirating, ninja salvaging, and can flipping everyone I can. And lol at thinking it's about the money. Tears are far more valuable than ISK to me.
And I guess I'll hold off on working towards suiciding for now. I was training up Nav skills and Small Autocannon/Rocket support skills to eventually get myself into an Interceptor for lowsec roaming/canflipping. I'll just focus on that for now and worry about suicide ganking later. Any other opinions are definitely welcomed. I could always use more tears as well.

I tried to torp a hulk for fun and to test the response times,
within 6 secs I had concord there jamming my raven, it did take them 15-20 secs to kill the raven but during that time the drones were firing on the hulk.
and that was in a 0.6 system,
So try using a domi with heavy drones and blasters, that should kill the hulk before concord comes and ends all the fun.

Yeah, I wasn't really sure on whether or not the Raven was the best ship to use, it just seemed to be the ship that I heard most people used. I've seen the Thorax used a few times as well. By the time I start doing this I'll have plenty of money from ninja salvaging and miner ransoms, so hopefully I'll be able to test a bit and see which ship I perform better with.

T2 blasters on a Thorax and a rack of unnamed damage mods would probably do the trick. You could also fit a smartbombing BS and find a group together and let them rip.
.5 security is the best location because it takes upwards of 30 seconds for CONCORD to omgwtfbbq your ass...so... |

Probably going to go with a Thorax then. Training up to a Thorax and T2 Blasters shouldn't take very long at all. |

You can take down a hulk (and sometimes even the pod) in a 0.5 system with 4 reasonably skilled T1 fitted catalysts. Two for a mach. One for a retreiver. Your sec status will obviously take a battering. |

A Thorax alone will not gank a Hulk. Read what I wrote earlier, stop being delusional and stupid.

I'm not being delusional and stupid. I never said I was going to solo gank in the Thorax, I'd be with a few other guys. Thanks for that though. |

Not really good advice.
OP-
It is quite easy to solo gank a Hulk with a cruiser, but you have to pay careful attention to some detail and you have to be very committed in your training and invest in some damage implants for your clone to maximize your results.
If you skill for a Thorax, get T2 medium blasters with med. blaster spec at 4, all damage related supporting gunnery skills to 5 (tracking and range/falloff skills are also critical), and make sure you have your medium drone skills and advanced drone interfacing to 5 you should be able to solo a light to moderately tanked Hulk.
A 5% all turret and 5% medium hybrid turret damage implant will also make that last bit of difference between leaving the guy with 10% hull and completing the kill. But all of the above is the easy part.
The hard part: getting an ultra-precise warp-in so that you land dead still at about 1.5-2km away from the target. THIS IS THE MOST CRITICAL PART of the whole thing. If you don't do this, even if you land at 3-4km away, you run the risk of missing the kill due to the horrible range and tracking issues that blasters have.
Ship fits are very straight forward (neutron IIs, magstab IIs, faction antimatter, some sensor booster IIs etc.), what is most important tactically is that you make sure that you already have your drones 'unpackaged', because if you don't they'll lag a bit as they do so when you first launch them, and also be ready to click on that r#tarded ass dialogue box warning you about attacking in highsec.
I've killed quite a few hulks solo, and very consistently at that. It does take a great deal of skill and timing on the part of the aggressor, despite what all the carebears say, but it is also very rewarding when you complete the kill and watch their tears in local. Yes, tell a new person who can barely fly Rifters that he can solo gank Hulks in his Thorax. Great idea. You still can't kill the well-tanked ones though.
Edit: Not to mention the investment required in T2 fittings. Jeeeez. Oh and he needs damage implants as well, whoopee. |

Well if you can fit drone control units to a thorax, you ARE uber.

You can't lock a hulk in a rax without multiple T2 SeBo's? And you can disable that warning box iirc.

I have also found that quite often launching drones and then shooting the hulk they usually don't auto aggro, and that I have to right click attack target to get the drones to shoot. didn't notice it until we left a hulk in structure
upon review of my fraps they never attacked on their own before either. |

the 5% to medium turret damage implants are given out as a storyline reward, so they are rather cheap. (around 3 mil in the citadel) |

Edited by: Salastil on 20/06/2009 22:30:31 Edited by: Salastil on 20/06/2009 22:29:51 The point is to kill Hulks that are profitable to pop. You need an alts for this. A ship scans the Hulk to see it's fit. Go for faction fit ones, hit ones with tanking mods as generally they're the most expensive item on it. The point is to use T1 mods in a dirt cheap ship. Thorax and Brutix are the workhorses for Gallente and probably the best overall. Warp in overheat your guns before they fire and max out damage mods. Don't bother tanking you're neuted and jammed instantly. Pop the Hulk use alt to scoop your own Drones and the wrecks you've just made. Hopefully with luck you'll have made 100m+ profit.
Now go to 0.0 and bounce between a few systems and pop the largest rat in each one. Each session change clears the required time that passes between sec status boosting.

What I like to do is load up an 8 highslot BS with smartbombs and a bit of a tank. Cap boosters as well. Then you warp in within 5k of a group of hulks/others and light the smarties. First volley pops all the barges, second volley pops the hulks and the pods of the barge pilots, third gets the pods of the hulks.
Tried, tested and true, and all you need for skills is to equip smartbombs, cap boosters & armor plates.

You wanna keep it cheap and insure your ship so you only lose a few million per attempt (and some sec status but who wants that?). Before you do your ganking though, make sure you get information about the target and the system. This is what you want to check out:
Target Hitpoints (EFT it maybe, get a general idea of how long it will take to kill) System Security (How Fast CONC will respond) Sentries (Will Sentry guns be present?) Participation (How many people will you have?)
Personally, I prefer one of 2 Tech I Cruisers for ganking. Rupture or Thorax and it is dependent on the system security. High security systems where you are either engaging under sentry fire or where CONC responds almost instantly deserves a Rupture. No T1 Cruiser can match the sheer alpha strike of a Rupture. Load it up with damage mods, artillery, and some heavy launchers. Pop in 2 rounds of ammo into each weapon (that's all you'll have time to fire) and get ready to instapop almost any industrial type ship with a group of 5 or so people.
As for lower-high sec space, Thorax is where it's at. Medium Drones + Blasters will get you an absurd amount of DPS (which matters when you're not being isntapopped by sentries/CONC).
Either way, you'll want a small group 5 people or so and to pick your targets wisely. Do some scanning with an alt. Maybe use the test server to see how many ships it will take to kill a Hulk in < x amount of time. Definitely a ton of fun and a way to burn sec status.

You make it sound alot easier than it actually is... Hulks EHP in average range from 8000 to 12000 and you will usually have enough time for 2 smartbomb cycles MAYBE 3. Even using the YF-12a smartbombs won't give you enough damage to solo a hulk in 3 volleys before concorde BBQ's you.
Also consider that unless you don't have issues with your sec status before actually doing the gank, then you will have an additional issue namely faction police. There is no way your plated BS will be able to warp in time before you get scramed without wither a buddy webbing you or depositing the ship for you.

not to derail, but how much exactly does it cut down the time?
could i jump between 2 systems over and over again or is there still like a 5 min wait between sec gains or something?
