Hello. I'm wondering what the difference is. I know that the 350mm rails have less range but more damage and vice versa but what does this mean in practice? Im trying to get my mega fitted for ratting and some mission running (with my corp mates, so no solo stuff here). I just wasted almost all of my money to get the 350mm prototype rails, and now i have 2nd thoughts whether it was the right choice.
In EFT, I couldnt fit 425mm rails without using power diagnostics, so my dps dropped a little. Id appreciate if someone could clarify me.

Edited by: Sigvardt on 15/06/2009 15:29:13 I am not entirely sure I did this proper but I simply took an AM L charge and then used the statistics of the 350mm vs. 425mm. One round of AM L is 48 damage.
(48 * 2) / 7,31 = 13,13 DPS ~ 350mm
(48 * 2,75) / 9,56 = 13,8 DPS ~ 425mm
It seems the 350mm is the better choice as it's easier to fit. I would presume tough that the 425mm can score bigger criticals hits etc. as it's modifier is larger.
Edit:
The 350mm also have much better tracking than the 425mm. The 425mm wins the battle for range tough and overall oomph. If you are at range and the target is speeding towards you in a straight line it's transversal will be 0 or close which means tracking is not an issue.

the 425's track worse , hit harder , further out, are harder to fit.
the 350's are the mid range large hybrid , the track better ( by .002 rad ) , hit less hard , less far out, are alot easier to fit allowing for damage mods.
I personally use 425's mainly because I'm cheap and run antimatter in them, for missioning . But ! 425's can't fit a frigate that's closer that 40km ish, and have issues with cruises at 30 km.
In practice you rarely are going to need ranged ammo ( beyond say 80 km ) in missions, rails can be setup to shoot way further than a mission will ever need.
If you're running missions with folks make sure you've fitted enough tank to be able to last if a wave agro's you instead of the folks doing the mission, make sure you get decent drone skills to get the scramming firgates off you so you can warp out.
I haven't run 350's I'm guessing that the radius size will make it difficult to hit frig's and cruisers anyway. And you may issues hitting at a range that you could hit a frig ( thought proto's are nice )
Run a few missions , have some fun, if you're in a group play around with the ammo you can use, then guns etc.

Edited by: Shebee on 15/06/2009 15:34:40 So basically the 425mm are better? Just harder to fit.
Should I try to fit the 425mms instead putting some power diagnostics?

425's are better for killing bs / bc at range.
350's are better closer up when things start to actually need tracking to hit.
As and example once cruisers / frigates are in close, if I've run out of ranged targets. I don't even waste the ammo shooting at the close stuff, because with 425's there is no point you won't hit anything. ( yay drones )
Not that it really matters but 350's are going to be slightly more spendy ammo wise, but I really don't think that's an issue unless you're in an ammo scarce area. ( any mission will more than pay for the ammo )

The DPS on your 350mm Prototype Gauss I is 15,76 with AM L. So they beat stock 425mm at least.
This is base dps with no skills taken into account nor ship bonus. |

By the way what ammo is prefered? Ive seen almost everyone use animatter, but whats another option?
Also, when i start fighting should i calculate the optimal range manually or can i check it somewhere? |

once you're in space with the ammo of choice installed if you click show info on your weapon it'll give you the current info with all bonus's etc figured in.
There are 8 different hybrid ammo's shortest range, -50%, heavy damage, most cap / shot( antimatter ) longer ranges less missed damage the rest of them to longest range +60% less damage , least cap / shot ( iron )
Most folks use antimatter in missions because they don't need the range, and the faster things die the better.

I use 350's in my Mega. I also use a Serpentis tracking computer, and swap scripts depending on range. I can hit most cruisers and frigates, from 50k down to about 10k. I use antimatter rounds, and hit for about 400dps, with 1100ish volleys. you burn ammo fast, but its a nice setup. I use two heavy launchers in the last 2 slots, and one burst aerator rig, and 2 mag stab. Its a nice setup. |

some good posts here.
you can fit a full rack of 350's on a mega and add in some damage mods and gives you good range and damage at mid range (up to about 47km) good for standard pvp, ratting and missioning and probably wormholes.
425's have a single purpose imo, and that is for sniper fit BS, where you use iron instead of antimatter, you fit tracking computers and sensor boosters, but dont have a full rack of guns. Sniper BS are pretty much useless by themselves but in large groups of 10+ they can really turn the tide of battle. the goal here is to be able to hit your targets with reasonable damage at ranges of 150+ km
Sniper BS fleets are a vital part of 0.0 warfare but are rarely seen in empire fleets. BS warfare is one of the things we train at A.SEC. contact us if you would like more information
