Hi all,
Quick question, what would be a good EFT defense rating that would allow me to do L4 missions? would 900 be enough? I'm not exactly sure really the "Definition" of the defense rating, any help would be much appreciated.
P.S. I'm not planning on doing L4's right away or anything, just wondering, thanks

The answer depends on a few things such as: Are your gank skills good or does your Raven do 250DPS only? Can you follow guides and manage spawns?
If you can kill fast...then even something as small as 300 defense is fine. Unless you plan to aggro the whole room.
Shoot for 500.

no one can give you an awnser to that question..
I do 300dps tank roughly and can do all level 4's without warpouts. and i do it up close and personal.
however most of my tank is my own dps... i kill there dps faster then they can overwhelm my sheilds...
Anywyas what amount of damage are you doing? what kind of weapon? what kind of support for htose weapons? (painters, tracking computers?). cna you use tech 2 drones?
supply that information, and people can give you a better idea.

Yeah the above posts are pretty good indicators of how much you need. 300ish if you kill fast and are knowledgeable about the missions, 500ish to be safer. With 900 as in the original post you could tank just about anything save for full agro (which you should never have) from a couple of the harder missions. Also, the "definition" of the defense rating is just the amount of dps you can tank, with your resists included. |

Offence is also defence. After all, wrecks dont hurt you much. You should try getting a defence rating of about 400 dps, especially if youre new to a mission and dont really know what to expect. Better be on the safe side. And just a general advice before you start on lvl 4's: make sure you have good drone skills, so like drone interfacing 3, and t2 drones are handy too. Drones are the ones that usually cause your ship to pop ;) And ofcourse read the eve-survival.com guide before you start.

If your tank is full active go for around 800 - 1000 in EFT and you are on save side if you dont go beserk and kill the triggers first. I got a Domi with all Tankskills LVL 5 Active Tank and 80% of my Missiontime i only have 1 repper active.
Defence around 800 is mostly all Tankskills Level at 4; 4 active Hardeners and 2 Reppers.
Depending on the DMG you do, you dont have to activate the 2nd repper, but if something goes wrong, your glad you have one. Its ok if you are not Capstable with 2 Repper, you only have to turn the 2nd repper on if the Dmg is to high. You can activate him until you are full armor and then deactivate and wait until 30% armor or so. |

In EFT if you can do approx 600 dps to NPC's you are planning to fight then around 300 - 350 dps tank against same enemies should be quite adequate in level 4 missions. Can do fine with less if you do more damage or know well what you are doing.

If you add up your rat-specific EFT Defense and your EFT DPS, you want to shoot for something on the order of 1000 combined total. As others said, you want to be trading off Defense for DPS, as long as the combined total is at least 1000. So if you have 600 DPS, you can get away with about 400 rat-specific Defense generally for L4's. That's assuming a BC- or BS-sized buffer tank that can withstand the initial incoming damage. |

I do over 1000dps... (and use dual painters, in a golem) and i know for a fact that a 0dps tank wont keep me alive (well on lots of missions it can but not all).

... it's a rule of thumb, not gospel, which means it's not going to work exactly for everyone every time, but should work for most people most of the time. And the fact that a 0 DPS tank would work for you in most missions confirms the rule of thumb.
