I'm going to quote a couple of e-mails that are sitting in my inbox. They are from a small indie game company called Caravel Games that uses a subscription-based service to provide support, help and updates to their products. Underlined parts are for emphasis.
First e-mail, dated April 27th 2009:
Quote: Hello!
This is an automated reminder that you've only got one month of CaravelNet membership left on your account.
CaravelNet is an online service for players of DROD that you signed up for earlier. To order another year or get more information about it, you can take a look at this page: [URL removed]
If you've already paid for a renewal to your membership, then you should have received an e-mail after the order with subject "CaravelNet Activation" which should be used to credit the renewal to your account. If you don't have this e-mail or have any other questions, please send me an e-mail, and we'll sort it out.
If there's anything I can help you with, please let me know!
-Mike Rimer
Second e-mail, dated today (May 20th) 2009:
Quote: Hello!
This is an automated reminder that you've only got one week of CaravelNet membership left on your account. I sent you one earlier, and I'll send you one more the day before your account lapses. After that, no more e-mails are planned to be sent related to your CaravelNet account.
CaravelNet is an online service for players of DROD that you signed up for earlier. To order another year or get more information about it, you can take a look at this page: [URL removed. Again.]

I'm scheduled to receive a third e-mail on May 26th.
This is not a disguised advertisement, this is me demonstrating what CCP sorely lacks on their customer support front: Automated subscription service announcements. Caravel Games are not "big fish", they do not service hundreds of thousands of players. And yet they manage to beat the pants off you guys. This isn't an impossible task, it can be done. And we would be so grateful and people's opinion of your customer support would rise sharply.
Learn, guys.
(They also charge only $12 for an annual subscription. I guess it would be extreme optimism to expect you could learn that as well? ) |

Is it really that hard to look at a calendar and say "Oh look, my billing cycle is coming up".
As for the $12 yearly sub well LOL, just freakin LOL. Go back to your flash media game.

There you go! Make an actual attempt to leave the basement and get a GF. Then when her times comes around you know its time to pay, in so many ways.....

I guess some people are just too lazy/stupid to log into their account and check how much time they have left as well.
Of course CCp could always put the time remaining on the character selection screen, but then we would have people that would still complain they didn't know about it

I have a txt file on my desktop with the account expiration dates for each of my 5 accounts. Every paycheck I open that file, and check which accounts will be paid that pay week.
It's not hard.
And for those of us with multiple accounts, I'd be getting mails from them almost on a daily basis about ONE of my accounts expireing if they did what that company did.
Personally, I just think that they should find some say to integrate a count down timer(Like skills) that shows when my account will expire and show it at the login screen.

You know, the majority of the posts here so far say this...
A new car?...BAH!!......Why should I give up my horse and buggy?
Followed by the CCP apologetic fanboi base replies.
Look, mass emailing is simple technology. The OP has a point. CCP does tend to ignore the simple things in life when it comes to EVE. The customer comes first and the customer is always right. That is basic business practice.
And all you with rude comments should really just STFU, You add nothing to the thread but bandwidth waste.

Your analogy is great and incredible as you say we want to stay with age old technology!
Oh wait, I use this nifty little piece of technology called a debit card. With the aid of this debit card CCP can auto bill me each month as long as I have money in the account. This way I don't even have to think about the billing cycle at all. And the best part is that banks world wide support the debit card approach so unless you live in a 3rd world nation it would be pretty hard to claim that you can't get one.
So to continue with your analogy the email system would be like you wanting to upgrade to a steam car while I drive by in my Lamborghini.

Actually, in reality, the customer is at best occasionally right.
I have little patience with people that swallowed that rhetoric when they got their first retail job straight out of high school, and have blindly regurgitated it ever since.
If the customer was always right, they would never have to ask you a question eh? Or simply say "I believe I should have this service you offer for free". For that matter, since they know more about what you do than you yourself do, they probably should be the ones running the company... right?
But as we all know, in the real world, this is not so. At best, you may occasionally have a refreshing interaction with a customer that has a passable idea of what he wants to ask about or comment on... but those conversations are few and far between.
Back to the point of the thread... an option to turn on/off a notification service would not be a bad option to consider implementing. Although frankly so few people really need it I could also see it being considered a waste of time and resources.
However, OP, your condescending attitude and the overall tone of your post is completely unneccessary and it is highly unlikely it will have a positive impact upon CCP to consider your request.
Apparently, you need to learn lessons similar to the one you amusingly presumed to teach.
(Hey, if you are going to be condescending, go big or go home.)

There are people that don't like to have funds automatically withdrawn every month from their accounts. I myself like to pay as I go. The day i don't want to play anymore, I dont have to worry about funds being withdrawn.

Yeah I can do that too. I pay month to month and when I get I bored I go to my account to the left of this screen, click cancel account, click yes I am sure, and I'm done. I play for the remainder of my time for the month, as would you, and I am not autobilled for the next month.
Next imaginary issue please.

Actually I like this idea.... is it really that big of a deal to have them warn you of an up and coming bill? Especially since it's an automatic deduction unless you use GTC's.
Not sure why CCP fanboi's are opposed to this idea.

Its amazing how many players seem mortally offended by the OPs suggestion. Its a good idea, easily implemented, and would help a lot of players who use GTCs and the like. Yet the attitude seems to be: 'I don't personally need this so its a bad idea'. I think Eve would be a better game if players could avoid these knee-jerk reactions to anything new. The forums would certainly be a more pleasant place to visit.
Still, trolls can't help being trolls...

What I really find funny is that this fix is so easy even a caveman can do it, but forum users apparently can't.
Most Emails have a calendar system. I'll use Microsoft Outlook as a prime example.
Open outlook/Go to calendar. Make a new recurring event. Place the time that you want and have it say pay bill. Make the item monthly.
Problem fixed and it takes all of 5 minutes! Even if your computer is off at the time this message appears it will still ping as soon as you power up.
You get your message that you want, stylized to your liking, and my inbox doesn't get flooded with even more crap that I delete anyways.
If anyone wants to play dead weight and say that their email account does not have this option I can link them to a widget calendar that does the exact same thing. And if that isn't good enough I can rant about you being a momma's boy that expects to be spoonfed in life (Each service is free)

Yes, would be nice to have for those not using CCPs recurring billing service, but waaayyy down on the list.
There is simply more important stuff for CCP to fix and implement than that. Until there is not any more important stuff to care about, we all should be able to remember when to pay again ourselves.

A different department would handle this.... it's not like ccp is 5 guys in room together doing everything. (There is a thing called a billing department. I hear trolls lurk there too.) Further more as we are paying for a sub I think CCP can do the courtesy of sending an e-mail ahead time warning of such a thing. If you're not going to use it then so be it. But you have no reason to object to others using it, or asking for it.
God you'd swear the guy asked for people on these forums to send their first born children. _________________________
