can anyone give me a list of bands that use trippy effects in their music? I'm looking for more of a dark sound, kind of like original ambient music, and maybe some modern rock that does this. None of this ambient techno crap- pick something that will bring me down and then make me think?
Thanks =]

Would be easier if you could give an example of what this "ambient techno crap" is. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

You know what? scratch that comment about the ambient techno. I really don't care. I'm lookin for something that will make me kinda trip out O_o help please? Something with a slow to medium beat (bass is good too),and preferably no vocals (if they're good I guess that's passable too)

Autechre?
The Autechre fans better chime in on this but the little I've heard would work well as EVE mood setters.
Wait, that's kind of electronic.
Want trippy? How about Flaming Lips' Zaireeka? Better have those four (4!) separate stereo setups, each with a CD-player, all plugged in and ready, though.

You should check out some of my work.

That should be enough to get you started.
If you're interested in what you hear, I might be able to slide you a free copy of the album.

Aghast Archon Satani Beherit (the '94 and '95 albums) Bohren&Der Club Of Gore are a ****ing great doomjazz band Elend are the uncrowned kings of medievalseque dark tirual ambient (The Umbersun trilogy is actually the reverse of a 14th sentury catholic rite) I dont know if Karjalan Sissit qualifies, but he oplays siome seriously ****ed up martial ambient Then, we have MZ412, the ****ing mindkillers And their close relative, Brighter Death Now Everything the Old Europa Cafe and Cold Meat industry labels have put out.
Suuri Shamaani is the low-fi project of the guy behind beherit
Neptune Towers is the ambient project of noone other than Fenriz
And if you are interested in ambinet black metal, I can name a few dozen bands worth getting into.

WTB some acid O_o that is perfect, it belongs in the soundtrack of some Japanese-horror themed movie or video game.

I liked that, goes very well with eve. Autechre I usually find a bit too... choppy, to listen to for more than a few mins. Guy below the quoted poster... seek help.
My brain is doing other stuff atm so no suggestions from me, sorry. Respect to mr. Skye here tho! -----

OK, not exactly modern, but I've got a couple of suggestions.
Can't go wrong with a bit of David Bowie (stop giggling at the back) and in this case I think the albums Scary Monsters and Low would both seem to fit the bill; lots of strange noises and odd ideas with the added bonus that your mum/wife/kids/significant other may well not like it. Low in particular is very dark... in fact I'd say it was downright bleak. Good stuff though and truly excellent through headphones sat in a darkened room late at night.
Peter Gabriel also does dark and farily trippy quite well, although usually not for entire albums at a time. Check out Intruder and Games Without Frontiers from his eponymous third album sometimes known as Melt or Melting Face.

Raison D'Etre <3 :)
Also, while we are here, how about Current 93, Death In June, and their likings?
Oh, and while not exactly this kind of music, the Grand Declaration of War album from MayheM has some very, very disturbing electronic parts.
Btw, is anyone interested in me listing some ambient/industrial black metal bands?
I love to play my role as a wlaking metal encyclopedia

They even have an entire album up for free download. (one of their early ones)
Or you could look them up on MySpace. AstroSoniq on Myspace
I really like their latest album. (Speeder People) The fact that I know a few of the band members personally does help of course.

Well.. Fantomas comes to mind http://www.myspace.com/fantomasband Fantomas "directors cut" has reworked horror film scores, and thier "Surgical Specimens From the Musuem of Skin" is most deff odd and dark. Some might be a bit 'choppy' for what you are looking for. And if you feel yourself slipping into the abyss, just listen to "the pirate song" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsJyfN0ICU best when doing negative standing things in EVE.
Hope this helps

Another group for consideration: Boards of Canada. Here's a link to their later work (Dayvan Cowboy), but the older stuff (Everything You Do Is A Balloon) is vague, trippy and very dark at times. In that last link, the intro runs till around 1:40 and the distorted bass is supposed to be in there. Sidenote, the clip the guy put under it (not the official one, afaik there never was a video for the song) is seriously freaky, and the first clip shows a guy with balls the size of grapefruits.
The whole discography of these guys is one long ride into old fashioned sounds mixed with dark tones, slow beats and overall awesome composition.
