"Do not fly what you cannot afford to lose."
An often repeated rule on here but the only way it really sinks in is when it happens to you.
I've been playing Eve for about 3-4 months now and with my awesome 3.7 mil SP, I thought I knew the score. I thought I knew all about fitting ships and frigates for missions and hey, PvP couldn't be that different, right?
I'm also in love with the whole Sansha thing and after winning a competition for backstory writing, I won 500 million ISK. All my shiny toy wishes could come true. One of those was to own a Phantasm. I loved that little Phatnasm, fitting it with the best stuff I could by, station spinning it every day and occasionally taking it out for missions in high sec, where it would wtfpwn its merry way through LI and LII missions.
However, merely owning one of their ships wasn't enough - I wanted to build standings with Sansha's Nation. I'd had experience of the HED and 3GD gatecamps (and a big hello to all you b*****s in AAA!) and had been informed on numerous occasions that Stain was an unhealthy place to be. So, I decided to get a little taste of life in 0.0 in one of the quieter zones - Venal. I snuck up there in a shuttle and used some of that money to get set up with an Arby. A few weeks past and I got the hang of insta undocking and running like hell whenever I saw anything else in local.
I decided to take a gamble and see if I could sneak my Arby back from Venal to Amarr space and to my surprise, I managed it - this 0.0 sec business wasn't nearly as hard as everyone made out. After a night of heavy drinking and feeling like human wreckage, I decided to take a chance and fly my Phantasm down to Stain for mission running. I'd be living in deadspace pockets, I could undock in seconds - where was the problem?
Because I wasn't *entirely* stupid, I decided to do this when a minimum number of people were on - namely just before downtime. As my Phantasm entered HED, I nervously looked in the local channel. 2 people here - should be fairly safe. I warped out to a planet near the exit gate and then on to the gate itself, so as to avoid any obvious bubbles and to my amazement, I made it through. Then the next system (3 mins until cluster shutdown) and the next and the next (1 min until cluster shutdown Oo). It was clear that I wasn't going to make it past 3GD before the time was up, so I warped on to a relatively out of the way system...which happened to have 3 Sansha BSes and 2 cruisers sitting on the gate (5 seconds until cluster shutdown). That was the longest 45 mins of my life, wondering if my beautiful and beloved ship was about to get smoked by *NPCs* of all things.
The cluster came back up and my Phantasm was intact. About 3000 were online when I came back on, so I took a suicidal risk and flew through 3GD. I was absolutely gobsmacked when I made it through alive, although a friend warned me that a shout had gone up in local. The endless system jumps continued until I was in the neighbouring system to my final destination. I had made it alive!
[Cat Girl is trying to warp scramble you]
...oh f***. I hit my afterburner trying to pull away from the Inty but hey, it was just an inty - my faction cruiser should be able to smoke it right? A few seconds past and the inty was on about 50% armour. Just a couple more shots and I'd be able to run for it.
[Tempest's Heavy Artillery smacks the cr*p out of your ship for 500 damage]
...and a few seconds later, my beautiful Phantasm, that I had worked so hard to get was nothing more than wreckage. I was literally stunned - I could not believe this had happened just one jump away from relative safety in a section of space that, until that point had been as quiet as the grave.
My pod soon followed my Phantasm to Tritanium Heaven and I was back in Amarr space - all my work undone. For the briefest of moments, I considered uninstalling Eve and going back to Warcraft...

...then I remembered Rule One and what a stupid series of mistakes I had made.
I still had my Sansha standing and it will take a lot of work but one day I will fly a Phantasm once more. I guess the whole point of this post is to say that until Rule One bites you firmly in the a**, it will not properly sink in. If you read nothing else of this sorry story, read the first line and consider yourself forewarned.
PS: A couple of hours later, after sneaking back into Stain in an Executioner, I found myself chatting to the very person that had destroyed my ship. He then spent the next 3-4 hours giving me advice and coaching on living in 0.0.
You'd never see that happening in Warcraft!

Some times you win, sometimes you lose. Even though you had your nice shiny ship blown up I would say that todays lesson was a win for you, and you had the courage to go back and not do an emoquit.

Actually rule #1 is :
"Is my clone up to date ?"
So is rule 2. For rule 3 refer to rule 2. Finally, someone should make a really cool sig for me. |

I enjoyed the OP's story. It was exciting.
And a lesson on how to handle ship loss for the uninitiated.

Dear OP: You Sir, belong in Eve. You went out, you had fun. You won, you lost. And then you learned from it and went back for some more. Welcome to EVE and more importantly, welcome to the true ranks of Eve's playerbase.

My understanding is that clones are for when you get podded; what exactly are the consequences of getting podded? Has something to do with losing SP if I understand this. You can't lose skills though, can you?

Congratulations!
your story mirrors mine in many ways , specificaly about diving in head-first in 0.0 to check sansha stuff...
Well...2.5 years and countless bill losses later....i`m on it, runing for the Nation
At any rate , I wont rant here , look me up ingame someday and...we`ll see if we can work things out for you
If noone said it yet , welcome to EvE (never too late to say it)

Yep, if your pod is killed, and your default clone is for 900 skill points, and your at 1.6million+. you would lose skills.

Thank you all for the encouragement <3
To be honest, it really wasn't the reaction I expected - I thought I would see endless posts flaming me for taking 200 million ISK's worth of pirate bait right into the heart of pirate country.

I would have to say it is "Trust No One". -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

This is the part I'm most interested in. What was some of the advice? I'd be interested in hearing a bit about his/her perspective on things.

Things like transversal velocity, how to use the directional scanner properly (which saved my bacon at least twice last night), how to use a cloak, aggro rules on a jumpgate - really insightful. =)

Rule one of EVE is basically Murphy's Law.
-There is a Hostile Camp on the Other side of the Gate -If you gank that Rookie ship in a belt someone will Hotdrop a Capship fleet on top of you. -That Unaccounted Local Is watching you in a Cloaked F. Recon -If you Autopilot through Highsec AFK, you Will get Shot Down -Etc.
I've found the only thing that keeps me from losing a lot of ships is almost irrational Paranoia. Don't Take risks unless you can either shrug off the Loss, or you're willing to spend a few days working for your ship again.

This so reminds me of some off my 'better' times in Eve.
The times when you think 'I'll quickly jump this gate before going to bed'....times when you think 'there wasn't a gatecamp 30 minutes ago, it'll be safe'. Times when you look at the wreckage off your ship and think you should really have seen it coming
