With the game growing faster than ever before; the store launch, ambulation coming - will subscription rates climb too high?
It just seems probable that another server will be necessary to accomodate so many new players.
If this happens, would we be permitted to transfer characters to that server?
I'd like to hear other thoughts on this.

But it begs the questions, just how many clients can the server support while still maintaining "decent" performance. Fortunately for EVE, its cliche type of crowd isn't very large and works to its own advantage. I believe though with the rate of growth, seeing how EVE has been doing so since its arrival, technology will keep up.

Sigh. . . They've already made a statement about adding another one.

Short Answer: The server works in clusters and is not a single machine. If there are more players they add more clusters, upgrade older ones and continue to improve their code. So no, there will never ever be the need for an entire new server seperate from the current one. There were working on a supercomputer but we haven't had news about that in ages.

No, not new server.
They'd add more regions & systems, though - done that three times already.

They've also added a metric ton of new servers to existing system. EvE is, in essence, infinitely expandable.

They added a gazillion of servers already, but they won't shard it. There is a difference

For those confused, here's a lamen's version of how it works:
- In other games, an entire 'shard' or dimension of the game world is held on one server, or as is the case in certain games, several small servers linked together. In the case expansion, they add a new 'shard', or dimension, which is a copy of all the other dimensions.
- In EvE, we have one 'shard' or dimension. However, we still have as many (or more) servers as all the shards in other games. Instead of putting one dimension per server, we network ALL the servers together, and put several systems per server.
Some systems, like Jita, actually have their own server dedicated to them. Others, however, include all the systems in a constellation, for instance. CCP has also made it possible to dynamically shift systems between servers, in the case where a fleet is taking up a lot of resources in one system, the other systems on that same server can be moved off and prevent someone three systems away from lagging out.
There are also servers set aside for unique things, like there is a server specifically for market, contract, manufacturing, chat ... etc. Even the upcoming ambulation expansion is reportedly going to be hosted on it's own, separate server network.
So with more players, they can and do simply add more server. There's just no reason to shard into more universes.

Why create a new separate server when you can just add the hardware to the existing one? -------- Ideas for: Mining

Sure would. Would probably give up gaming for real. The moment Oprah endorses EvE, I lose all faith in humanity. And having 2million soccer moms 'to play with' isn't my idea of fun.
If I wanted that, I'd be playing WoW.

No, it raises the question. Begging the question is something completely different.

If suddenly 2 million subscribers subbed up, that would be roughly 40 million US dollars or 30 million euro's (Random ass numbers). With that money CCP would probably just pile on the hardware. ______________________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008
