I'm currently flying a Dominix for level 4's since my drone skills are close to being maxed. However, I'm curious if the Mega would do a better job of completing the missions faster. Let's assume gunnery skills are on par with drone skills. I was hoping to get some advice before spending the money on the Mega.

Edited by: Ivan Kinsikor on 22/04/2009 22:23:10 I used to mission a lot in the Domi and then switched to a Hyperion. The Domi is the lazy man's mission boat. Aggro everything, launch drones, take a nap, collect loot, lather/rinse/repeat. It kicks ass, it just does the ass kickery slowly. The Hyperion can easily run level 4s with a single LAR II and I ran dual mag stabs in the lows which pushed my dps up quite a bit. The Mega would do alright, but the Hyperion is a bit better suited thanks to its rep bonus. The real gain by switching to a rail based platform is instant DPS. You really pick up a lot of speed by not having to wait on your drones to go from target to target.
Oh and for anyone who tries to argue in favor of the Mega just soley because of the tracking bonus, all I have to say to that is that a little manual piloting goes a long, long way. ---------------------------------------- *****es don't know 'bout my nano'd Titan ---------------------------------------- |

If you got some money make a shield tanked domi with rails. And yea this is my sig. Real PVP'ers only use f1. |

In the case of the navy mega, which is easily affordable these days, more buffer on the tank, better tracking, less cap issues, more drone space, room for third mag stab, etc. I've flown countless missions in both navytron and hype. Only thing the hype has going for it is it looks. On mission performance it's beaten everytime.

This - even an armor-tanked Domi (single LAR etc) with rails and sentries will easily perform ridiculously well. ----

sentry drones are instant dps too. I've never flown a mega or a hype in a mission, but then again, I wouldn't even consider it. The dominix does get a double damage bonus, and as your skills in gunnery and drones get higher its damage potential shoots through the roof. I haven't gotten t2 large rails or t2 sentries yet, and I can still do 9 out of 10 missions in my dominix with 2 magstabs fitted.
I did see a really nice looking shield setup with 425's, could someone post one?

My domi
Highs 6 425 2's (optional, exchange for faction to save CPU and PG, but you'll loose a bit of damage)
Mids 1 CN large shield booster (faction needed for CPU reasons) 2 Invuln 2's (or CN if you have the money) 2 omnidirectional tracking links (garde 2's with 40km optimal - yes please )
Lows 3 Gallente Navy magstabs (need faction for cpu reasons) 3 PDU 2's 1 cap power relay
Rigs 1 ACR 1 Sentry Damage Augmentor 1 CCC
Drones 5 garde 2's 5 warden 2's (or other sentry - you won't use them much) 5 ogre 2's (two omnidirectional links allow them to kill even elite frigates in one or two volleys)
Setup requires a 1%pg implant or some other way to grab 1%pg (faction PDU, -1% gun pg use implant etc.) With t2 invulns, requires drone rigging 4, or a 1 or 3% cpu implant. With max skills and no implants, it puts out 1043dps at 40km. The downside is that those missions with mass aggro can break your tank fairly quickly. If you're willing to loose some of the garde's range, you can upgrade your tank by dropping one omnidirectional tracking link for either another hardener or for a shield boost amp. Loosing the tracking link drops garde's optimal to 34km however, and makes the ogre 2's not hit quite as hard on elite frigates. Without running crystals however, thats about the only way to allow the tank to run through many of the tougher missions.
Going with a slightly more safe setup can give a bit over 900dps at 30km, and remain an armor tank Highs 5 350mm 2's 1 drone link augmentor
Mids 2 omnidirectional tracking links 1 tracking computer 2 2 cap recharger 2's
Lows 1 LAR 2 3 hardeners 3 magstab 2's
Rigs 1 Sentry Damage augmentor 2 CCC
Drones same as above
This setup gives a tank that is more powerful and lasts nearly twice as long (not that 4 minutes is all that much). However, you would have to drop to plutonium to get an optimal of 40km with your rails, which would reduce dps from 906 to 872. You can also change CCC rigs for armor rep rigs to get more boost tank, but less endurance. Of course, you can also raise the dps by switching to gallente navy magstabs, but they aren't needed for the fitting like in the shield tank.
Answering the original op's questions though, the mega is faster if you have significantly better gunnery skills than drone skills. Once your drone skills are good though, simply adding guns to the domi makes it come out better in all ways than a mega, or even a kronos. The most I could get out of a kronos was 731 gun dps, or 889 total dps (but the remaining dps would rarely be on the same target like the domi's sentry drones would). As the kronos has the same bonuses as the mega, but the same effective number of guns as the hyperion, it is undoubtedly the best gallente ship if you have poor drone skills.
Please note - all these numbers were achieved by using max skills and faction ammo. However, since I am only missing large rail spec 5 to get those max skills, I don't see that as unreasonable. Also, at this point the damage boost you get by using faction ammo more than makes itself felt in mission completion times - a difference of one volleying a target as opposed to two volleying him, which rapidly makes itself felt.

I am sorry but Dominix is by far a faster mission runner than Hyperion or Megathron. Try to fit it with Garde II, Omnidirectionals and maybe even Mag Stabs. If you use a double rep noob-fit, it is not the ship's problem, it is yours...
On topic, Dominix is the best all arround mission running ship arround, unless you can fly a Golem.

Does the SIN trump the domi in mission running or does a bit better kinetic resists (obviosly doing missions against rats that do kin dmg) and 1 more mid slot not make up for 1 less rig slot?.

Why people insist on putting .... on sentences I'll never know. **** drives me nuts. Anyway, I'd much rather rely on a full rack of big tasty railguns with magstabs/tracking enhancers and a flight of mediums to mulch the small stuff. I think it honestly comes down to flying style more than anything. If sitting around your sentries works for you, well hooray, but I prefer to be on the move and keeping my transverals where I want them to be so I can get the best hits possible.
At least, that's what I did back when I flew a battleship for level 4s. HACs are way more fun to mission in when I do feel like killing a few hours mindlessly.
@ The navy mega, wouldn't know, never was a big enough carebear to actually get past the shame of owning a navy anything.

I've tried a few ships for lvl 4s, tachyon abaddon and mega pulse navypoc with solid gunnery skills and amarr bs V, while they certainly do the job well and good they're outclassed by the dominix for anything but sanshas/bloods/drones (and that's with shoddy drone skills and close to no gunnery). With curator IIs it even rivals them for those.
Sentry drones really is the way to go, I found the setup i currently use on this forum and well.. it's really awesome, I doubt even a paladin or golem will beat it.
5x 350mm railguns (I use meta 3, can't do t2, not even close) 1x Drone link augmenter 3x omnidirectional tracking thingys 2x cap recharger II 1x LAR II 4x Hardener II 2x cap power relay II
aux nano/ccc/sentry damage rig
With t1 sentries it was pretty good, with t2 sentries it's a beast, the king of pve. Sure it is somewhat annoying you can't move around a lot, especially for those missions with far away gates, for those I use the heavies/mediums/lights and do my travelling first.

Oh, you can fly whatever you like. I am not the type of guy who tells people what to fly. But the guy who started this thread did not ask what you like more, he asked what gets the job done faster. Garde II with 3 Omnidirectional have no problem hitting anything while it approaches and hit really well at ~50kms (typical long range Battleship in missions) and Ogres II (with 3 Omnidirectional as well) 1-2 shot elite frigates.
EFT it or try it yourself, but at the end, Dominix and Megathron do about the same damage with the Dominix being much more versatile, easier to use, cap stable and with less tracking issues.
Of course, as I already said, Eve is a game so you should fly whatever you like.

Isn't the Mega generally used for PvP?
I haven't seen many Mega's doing missions, or heard of many that use it for missions for that matter. That's not to say it can't do it, just seems like the Domi is just overall better for that role.

I appreciate everyone's input on this topic. Since I'm 4 days from T2 sentries, I think I'll stick with the Domi. Besides, it's already paid for .
