I know this is not a new thing, but having a POS in Wormhole space for over a month now has been one heck of a grand experience for our tiny corp.
The whole thing started out as a half joking suggestion. Our corp has had it's share of disasters as far as setting up a POS in known space. Two of them were blown to heck and back, and a third we had to shutdown and drag out of null sec as the alliance we were with suddenly betrayed us (boy was that a rush, hauling those arrays while being picked off by our supposed "allies").
We'd set up another POS in high sec (a 0.5 system in Amarr space) to do some research, etc. Our corp leader wants to moon mine so bad, he pretty much dreams of it every night. I had suggested that we look at setting up a POS in Wormhole space, that while there is no moon mining, nor ice for fuels, there would be plenty of rare roids to mine, gas clouds and then Sleeper loot and salvage.
I didn't think he'd take me seriously........my mistake.
Next thing I know, we're setting up a POS in a Wormhole system. I thought we were going to do more research, but apparently not!
So off we go into the wild. We found a WH in high sec, and dove in. I had already scanned the unknown system, and found yet another WH leading to another unknown system. This is where we made our mistake. We took all the POS equipment into that 2nd WH. I'll explain why I think that was a mistake in a few.....
So we get our POS set up, one of the outer planets, get all the arrays that we wanted online (Tower, Hanger, Ship Maint., Refineries, Componet, Ammo Array, etc) and then get all the weapons systems online. We even brought the Stron for the POS to go into Reinforce mode, so most people wouldn't want to try and attack the POS do the the resources they'd have to expend bringing it down, etc.
Then we went to work mining. Wow! There's everything here, Jaspet, Dark Ocher, Hed, Hemo, Kernite, Gneiss, even Anknor! We've minded a lot of gas, mostly C70 and C72. Killed lots of Sleepers and looted their wrecks.
Now back to our horrible mistake: New WH only open up to low sec! I'm not sure if anyone else has done any research, etc on this, but our WH system consistantly opens up to low sec. About once out of 30 times has it opened directly into high sec. Of course the problem with that is, opening up to low sec, we play hell trying to bring in new fuel and trying to export out our rare ores and gasses. Gate Campers and PVP players make life a living hell for us when we try to do that of course. We have to carefully plan things to get more fuel in and to get stuff to sell out. Really bad days are when the PVP "Hunter/Killer" groups come into our WH system. Those are the "Rainy" days that we just sit in the POS and log. Any mining is stopped as, of course. Those are the days that I stay off EVE and get house work done.
I keep wondering if we had stayed in the first WH system that we came from High Sec, if the wormholes consistantly open up back to high sec? I know it's suppose to be random, and the low sec WH that we have open up are random, some days we're only 1 or 2 jumps from high sec, other days we're 7 or 12 jumps into low sec (side note: on those days that the wh is deep into low sec, we rarely have problems with PVP Hunter/Killers, as deep into Low Sec is a ghost town, as most players don't want to risk going in that deep. On days that the WH opens to low sec only 1 jump from High Sec, are the days that the PVP guys come in (bored Gate Campers I guess). )
So "Hi" from a Month in a WH System......32 days and counting.......

So, did the rush come from being able to harvest the womrhole ressources (of which you got alot more because it was a Lowsec wh, or the danger of pvp when crossing lowsec? :) -

Well the WH i live in is a low level one and always has a high sec exit so its not toally random once you're inside the WH, i've only seen 2 types of WH from here, one leads back to high sec and the other leads to more dangerous WH systems :) --------- Liberty Rogues Site[/center]

The rush was to get the ores that are in WH that you can only find in Low Sec or Null Sec (that and the gas clouds).
Our CEO has this habit of hearing an idea and then "KAH-CHING!" he ends up with ISK dancing in his eyes, ha! We do laugh at each disaster. You have to, laugh, or you'll end up hating the game and quiting. So we joke a lot about it. I get my Raven blown to smihtereens by other players, and I just shake my head, and joke about how I just made a ton of money off the isurance! hehehe.
We're thinking seriously of trying to move to a new WH system. I've got an alt that can probe and I think I'm going to stick in one from high sec, and just hang there for a few days, and see what WH's open up.

Edited by: nails on 14/04/2009 13:46:09 This honestly sounds like soooo much fun. As long as you built a big pos and had tons of storage capacity, just create massive stockpiles of rares, and then the one in 30 that the WH actually connects to empire, jump out massive embargos of all of your loot, keep alts in empire to slowly(or quickly) sell it off. Sounds like a get rich quick area. The chances of a massive enough faction jumping enough battleships/dreads in to take our your POS without collapsing the wormhole are pretty low I think. Your strategy is wise, and patience is required. I think the worst thing that could happen is another corp moves into your WH space and sets up a POS as well (assuming you are unable/unwilling to stop them). If I had enough time to do something like this, I'd be all for it, but sadly I don't lol. Cool read though, thanks for the post.
Anyone know if you can build an outpost in W-space? --------------

From the data I and my corpmates have gathered, it seems that every wormhole system is scripted to ALWAYS have one wormhole to the same system type, and a low chance of a second (or third) wormhole to open to a random system type.
As it turns out, the wormhole I was basing out of had a 0.0 -> Wspace link as one of the low chance spawns, as for 3 weeks straight it has spawned Deadly wormholes over and over again.
Having a regular wormhole opening into lowsec is actually a godsend in the fact that you can reliably get your loot to empire, so dont complain too much - I've been spacelost for 3 weeks now (bar one day when the wormhole openend up to Omist :p).
Your best bet is to pack a CHA with many, many months of fuel and keep tabs on your systems. A reliable k-space hole is worth more than you would think. Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Navigator |

You know, that if you have a scout go ahead of you, losec is almost as safe as hisec and the "hunker killer" groups usually tend to come in from hisec, seeing as most of the clueless carebears fly in from hisec anyway. The randomness is all in whether that first WH system is typical or not; if it was a typical "boundary layer" wormhole, it probably would indeed have consistent high-sec holes. I'm in such a system, where the scripted exits appear to be one high-sec and one "unknown" wormhole at all times, plus up to three other occasional wormholes to anywhere. However, my system rarely has the best ores (fanciest grav site I've seen is "Isolated Core Deposit" with one Spod roid plus some Dark Ochre and Gneiss and such) and really not enough other excitement to justify having a whole corp in there. ------------------ Ironfleet.com |

it cannot be that difficult to get stuff moved. Use a transport ship (t2 ftw) you can fit a Covert ops cloaking device. Makes you incredibly hard to catch in low sec. Really the only thing you need to fear is smart bombing battleships and those only appear on certain routes.
I enjoy looking forward to the next instalment of POS adventures in WH space

Wh have really brought back small gang pvp. and most class 3's and up never see a safe empire opening(we havnt for 3-4 weeks) but low sec just gives us random people to chase if we already farmed out the wh for the day.
CCP should have made this wh stuff in 2003. you log in and if you are logged straight in you know your not alone. If you have to wait for the system to load , you know your alone. one day your in kor-azor, next your in Esoteria. Heaven for small corp who wants to roam around

Edited by: Manandoun on 14/04/2009 20:29:05 My corp set its first POS down in a class 3 unknown system. Most (probably 90%) exit wormholes came out in low sec. Now and then, one would come out in high or null.
Recently, we decided we wanted to move up in the world, so we kept our eyes open for a more difficult system. Two days ago, we moved into a class 5 system, and, since then, we've had one wh exit to null, one to low, and one to high sec space. The one to high sec just opened today.

We also have a POS in a class 3 and have great fun getting it fuelled and getting our loot to market through lowsec. Oh yeah not to mention those dastardly sleepers!
The great thing is you only need a small gang, even if you're the only person online in your corp you can explore your neighborhood and find something to do solo. Even small corps can accomplish something and make a boatload of isk in the process. It is good to hear peoples adventures in the great unknown... ---
