OK so I am a returning player to Eve (had a miner which was my main about 4 or so years ago but ended up leaving due to boredom). I'm now back and extremely interested in the exploration side of things.
So far I have trained my first mil of points towards a covert ops ship/cloaking and relating scanning abilities as well as practised a lot of scanning in high sec .5 and above area's to great success (well found tons of wormholes and a few complexes).
My question is this:
- Is there money to be made as a solo explorer? From what I'm seeing after extensive searching on the web the answer is NO as when you find stuff you undoubtedly need to come back with a few guys in combat ships to take out the rats before you can hack/analyse/salvage... Are there places where this isnt the case?

If after 4 years you are still looking for zero risk and high reward then you better stick to sitting in your hulk and wait till you get bored again...
Or you better join a corp which does the combat and you the scanning.

If you have a Nighthawk or something similarly tanked you can solo 8/10 right? Isnt that worth it?
Maybe a Faction tanked Golem to do 8/10 solo? I guess sometimes the loot can be worth it...

Valid point Zarroth. however I am not necessarily after zero risk. I am currently solo'ing lvl 2 missions in an omen (and was after 9 days of play) be it very challenging. Its just my play style is vying towards the exploration side of things.
I think it would be ace flying around cloaked in null sec space like a nutter looking for riches and rewards. But would it be fruitless?
If it is, well i'm already in a corp and intend to do the group thing as well anyway...

Not in hisec.
You can make good isk in lowsec exploration if you know what you are doing. Almost all lowsec sites are soloable in a t2 fitted BC. Some of the tougher ones like "minor annexes" need more firepower.

Yes. There are radar sites in w-space you can solo in a Drake, because I've done it.
However, these sites are pretty rare. You're going to find a ton more that you'll want friends for. ------------------ Ironfleet.com |

I took a 10 month break from eve from january-october of last year. Came back with 300 mil in the bank and very few assets. Using essentially nothing but exploration and invention as money makers, I now have 6 capital ships, a couple billion worth of researched BPOs, and 4 complete POS setups with faction towers. I also have about 4 billion liquid.
Unfortunately the last patch changed so much with exploration that I don't really enjoy it anymore.. I actually just suspended all 3 of my accounts to take another break.
Solo exploration is going to be hit or miss in w-space. You can solo there but it is VERY time/ skill intensive.
Solo exploration in k-space (NPC 0.0) is probably still a very good way to make ISK (this is where I made all my cash) but the fact that pretty much anyone can do it easily now is going to severely devalue your finds there.
Anyone telling you that there's no cash in exploration either doesn't know what they are talking about or doesn't want more competition.
Caveat: when I say solo, I really mean solo with an alt. Difficulty goes WAY up if you can't split the scanning/ fighting/ hauling between a couple accounts. Of course working with a friend will work too.

Sorry, another caveat: this is not zero risk.. you will die a LOT in pretty expensive ships and may lose implanted clones (I lost a blackops, many rigged cov ops, and a few HACs and BS during my isk making binge) but if you are doing it right you will make enough to cover 10X what you lose.

Well about 3 weeks of solo exploration. I have a POS in w-space. And have RE'd three T3 cruiser BPCs. In a week I'll be doing tons of subsystems. So yeah, I'd say it's fairly profitable solo.

You aren't very detailed in what sorts of sites you want to run. Wormholes? Grav sites? Ladar? Unknowns? Radar? Magnetometric? And what sorts of ships you can rn them with.
Last night I had my best ever night of high sec exploring. One ship in an expedition dropped a low grade snake implant and a medium shadow tower BPC. That's probably several hundred million isk. But, believe me, I've got a lot of crap over the last few months and spent a lot of time exploring.
Most high sec sites can be done in a T1 cruiser (Vexor is my cruiser of choice). Some high sec expeditions will kill a Vexor (Drudge Factory for example) and a few of the hardest high sec unknowns can be very challenging (although I never actually lost a Vexor to one, it was pretty close a couple of times.)
High sec radar and magnetometric can be soloed easily (I ususally use an assault frigate nowadays, but a cruiser will crush them). Some of them are completely unguarded since the patch. Magnetometrics are pretty worthless, but radars can give tens of millions in drops.
The easiest Wormhole radar sites are lootable in a well skilled\equipped Vexor. Easy Magnetometric in a well skilled\equipped battleship. Those can drop wrecks worth quite a lot.
Gravimetric sites I wouldn't bother with, as a rule. (Possible exceptions if you find omber/kernite near a storyline agent so you can sell it for absurd amounts.)
Low sec radar/magnetometric are soloable (I've done it in an AF but that was too slow, so a cruiser would be better). However I don't have low pop low sec near my current base so I don't do it much. They're more profitable than hi sec ones, sop radar especially is worth doing.
