Well, I'm another with this problem.
At best I get 5 mins in game before it crashes with a 'connection lost' or 'socket closed' error. Been like this for 2 weeks now, slowly getting worse from once every 1/2 hr to every couple of mins.
It's unplayable for me which is really sad 'cos I miss EVE. --

I was getting the dreaded "socket closed" issue as well on a very frequent basis, though I noticed that it was only occurring on one of my computers at home, the others played fine. The one difference I noticed in that computer was that it was running McAfee Internet Security 2010, while all my others were running Norton Internet Security 2010 with no issues. I uninstalled McAfee and installed Norton and haven't had a single socket closed error since.

A further update for everyone still plagued by this. The pingplotter works but does eventually force you to buy the program which is really unnecessary since its just a interface overlaying what every single one of our pc's can do for free. I worked with my friend and he send me the following instructions. Follow these and you should never see a socket closed message again :
Open up notepad and paste in the following text:
@echo off :start ping -n 1 87.237.38.200 ping -n 10 127.0.0.1 > NUL 2>&1 GOTO start
Save the file and on the Save As screen open the "Save as type" drop-down and change it to All Files. Enter the file name eveping.bat (or any other name you want, as long as it has the .bat extension on it) and save it.
You can now run that file, wherever you saved it, and every 10 seconds it will ping the eve server and display the results.
Modifying the code: -To ping a different IP change the IP address on the first ping line to your new target. -To change the interval replace the 10 on the second ping line with however many seconds you want between pings.

So, it started for me as well (dandy); that pingplotter usually shows to me:
Quote:
Ping statistics for 87.237.38.200: Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 22ms, Maximum = 22ms, Average = 22ms
But then every 40-50 seconds or so:
Quote:
Ping statistics for 87.237.38.200: Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 0, Lost = 1 (100% loss),
Every 5 minutes or so it repeats that a few times, et voila; my clients drop out.

Just wondering how many of you have both a wireless card and a NIC card enabled on your computers?
I was dealing with this issue also for the past 3 weeks and just disabled my Wireless card to test if this is the problem.
Once I disabled the wireless card i was able to connect back into eve and its been running stable since... If it changes i will update this post. |

UPDATE* about a hour later from ^^^ post... Socket Closed - No router (directly into the wall), no firewall, did not loose Net outside of EVE...
Run NetMon during your eve session and see if you are getting a FIN packet that corresponds to your socket closed error. Also, check to see if you notice TCP checksum errors or sequence numbers not matching.

Well,I've been having this problem for almost 8 months,But it's never been as bad as the last 3 weeks. I use 2 systems and both get the socket closed error, but admittedly one system more then the other, even though both are on the same router. Today I tried a new ISP. I even hooked up the 2 systems directly to the ADSL modem(1 after the other of course).I still have socket closed errors. When I'm in a Orca,I can't get past 1 gate without getting Disconnected. And this is happening on both systems. I was really hoping that this problem was more my old ISP,but obviously it isn't.It's also highly unlikely that 2 high-end systems,One 1 year old,the other 2.5 years old would have the same problems from the systems themselves..
So have no clue where to go from here..Just wanted to say that changing ISP's did nothing to help my situation..:( Just to add, I went from Shaw cable to Telus ADSL. Guess I'll try sisi and hand in a bug report on it as CCP Fallout asks..

So I just noticed something very interesting. I had two clients of eve open at once. One client on tranq and the other on sisi. I'm on wifi and have been dc'd 3 times from tranq in the past 4-5 hours but not once at all on sisi.

A few observations: 1. This problem co-exists with inability to connect(or frequent disconnects) to IRC(quakenet, haven't tried other networks). 2. Occasionally i get trough and can stay connected to irc, during these windows i can also stay connected to eve with no problems. 2.1. right now i can stay connected, it's 15:02 local time on a monday so it's off peak hours. 3. I suffer similar disconnects from Bad Company 2 too, this appeared two weeks ago. It is not universal to all games, L4D2 works like a charm. 4. While running multiple accounts and playing with my roommate it doesn't affect all clients, last session(before it became entirely unplayable for me 90% of the time) my roomie was dropped every 10-15 minutes, and one of my accounts was dropped only once.

I seem to have found a way around this constant connection lost problem, ive been playing for the last 6 hours with +40k people online.... Go to your CCP Eve File,Open the "BIN" and search for ExeFile,Double click and the game should open,Works for me....hopefully ccp fixes this issue soon

CCP what gives with this socket close error? I had no problem with it when I was in my 21 day trail and once I upgraded I get this annoying problem. It is so bad now that I can even log on tonight! Once I hit connect it says socket close. I am not paying monthly for a game I can't play.

Another victim checking in. I have never been affected before, no hardware changes whatsoever. It started about 1 week ago, happens randomly (sometimes once or twice a day, sometimes up to ten times) and seems to be more frequent in the morning (GMT+1).

Just signed back up to EVE again. Haven't been to much busy places but was in Dodixie and got "socket error" roughly every 15min for about 5 times until I left the area. Previously in EVE I have never got this error.

yup, 30k ish here aswell...
i wonder if they will alctually look into practical solutions to the issue that once we hit that magic number, the crashes affect everyone at random. It's all very well creating sexy vids for CCP's sponsors to invest, but realitically is now the time to consider a second univers to relieve the strain, i can only imagine whats goiing to happen when you keep adding more subscriptions.
Maybe you could stop accepting subscriptions and tell the last 5k or so players "sorry, its full, heres your monery back" (Fat chance i know, but im getting worried that CCP is getting so worried about setting up their global corp that the game is going to become dead
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A NEW SERVER FOR PEOPLE WHO DONT WANT TO PUT UP WITH THIS FAIL
I WILL HAPPILY SACRIFICE MY 30mil Skillpoints, all my ships and Isk to actually play the game without the lag, disconnects and without the eve files becoming corrupt twice per day

+1 had the issues about 2 months ago. couldn't play eve with 2 accounts because i would get disconnected every 5 minutes. with 1 account i could play for like 1 hour until i got socket closed error. then i just resseted everything in my home. Modem, Router, switch and it seemed gone. But now after 2 months its started all over again. and resseting everything is not working anymore. also from the 10 crashed 5 of them are without the socket closed error. it just restarts the eve client.
CCP stop ****ing around and give your PAYING COSTUMERS some answers. atleast update people every month or so.
I don't understand every year i watch the video's of fanfest and when people get to ask ccp qeustions they allways ask stupid crap like when can we walk in stations. but no-1 comes up with a good qeustion like why the hell is CCP's customers support so Bad or why they have no telephone number so we can yell at them. Edited by: JohnSco on 24/05/2010 11:35:20 Edited by: JohnSco on 24/05/2010 11:33:35 Last night I had the usual 'socket closed' error that threw me out to my desktop. It then paused a couple of seconds then brought up the login screen for Eve. I always get the socket error when I'm docked and examining the market - usually when I'm exploring items and their descriptions. The text descriptions of the item, ie attributes, fitting, etc, disappear after examining eight or so different items. I just thought it was a memory error with my older machine. Glad to see it's probably not me as I have a dedicated Comcast cable line with virtually no problems. I'm using Windows XP with McAfee. I have the latest updates for both. Socket closed errors are frustrating as hell but I'm also glad to see that it doesn't happen to me while I'm out of dock. I'm using XP with McAfee.

When I was at my college, it turns out my issue with frequent socket closed errors was aggressive throttling. It seems like neither the server or client keep attempting to stay connecting; rather, they try just once, and if they get a packet either don't expect (for example, a keep-alive packet timing out and the server getting a market request instead), it simply closes the connection.
As some people have suggested, maybe some sort of SSL encapsulation will help a lot of people suffering from throttling and QoS issues. Failing that, maybe additional attempts to stay connected?
I managed to bypass my school's filtering using Proxifier (30 day trial) and an SSH tunnel (myentunnel) through my own proxy. Works wonderfully. By the way, this is my signature.

Edited by: Healer Axim on 28/05/2010 03:23:19 This problem just started up for me for a second time. I'm 99% sure it has to do with connections timing out.
rewind to last year: I had changed TCP and UDP timeouts on my router (WRT54GL hacked with DDWRT 23SP1) to something low, like 60 seconds. i did this for p2p performance. that's when eve would give me a socket disconnect error. unless i was constantly doing something in eve, sitting idle would cause me to drop. I increased the settings back to default and everything was happy again
fast forward to now: i changed from a cable connection w/ above WRT54GL to ATT UVerse. i have lots of custom setups on my WRT54GL so i kept it and plugged the WRT54GL into the ATT gateway, the ATT gateway allows for said configuration doing what they call "DMZ+". its basically a network bridge. after re-tooling my house to use this new setup i started getting the same socket closed i got before. only this time no changes to the timeouts or anything else has changed. now the interesting part, its NOT ATT. i can connect to the ATT gateway and eve will *not* drop me. its definitively something with the router behind router setup and I'll be damned if i can figure out what it is. i havent had time to try DMZ at my WRT54GL level, but honestly that's not a long term solution. i have eve installed on 4 different PC's at home (yeah, i'm kinda crazy) and i would like them all to work.
I hope this helps someone. i actually am going to try firing up wireshark to see exactly what's happening, i've just been so busy lately that I havent.
tl;dr version: its not neccessily ISP's fault. the issue boils down to timeouts *somewhere*, and for some people you might be able to resolve your issue by upping TCP/UDP traffic timeouts at your router level.

Had socket closed twice today, both the same circumstances, and a very odd consequence. Ok, so I have two characters online, one of whom is probing. Twice now, when I click the 'Analyze' botton, I get an immediate 'socket closed', but the really wierd thing is I also drop my internet connection totally. That is, its not just the client disconnecting, but my whole internet drops (red lights on my router etc) if I try to probe something . I then close down Eve, and the connection comes back...
This has never happened to me before, and I have had no issues at any other time with my Internet connection. Apart from a bunch of Sisters probes, and the chance to solo a bunch of BC's in a WH after a days work on finding them , no real harm done, but now I am very wary of pressing the 'Analyze ' button.
Is this familiar to anyone?, I'm also wondering if its a post expansion glitch.

Hey healer. I had the exact same problem, where if i put the gaming machine on the DMZ it would work fine. But that is not very safe, so luckily i found this fix after 1+ years.
Sounds like i have the fix for you: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=921650&page=47#1385 Check my post here and the initial post 2 post up. For a longer explanation you can check the link i have put in the post.

Ok, I don't know if this will help, but for me, the socket errors only started after this last patch. I had been disconnected before that of course, but rarely and never with the "socket error" message box. I only found out that this (the socket one) had been a ongoing problem when I complained about it in the help channel today.
Well, it's nothing concrete to go on for you guys, per se, but at least it gives you another situation to use.

Same here.
Suddenly getting kicked out of EVE all the time with the socket closed message since the last patch. I note the solution given my a poster a few posts ago. I know a little about computers but that solution was way too technical to be of any use. If anyone cares to put it in a language for dummies then that would be helpful. Hell I don't even know if my router is using tomato firmware, and I don't know how to find out.
Is there anywhere you can register your problem with CCP and provide them with details of your setup. I've had a very frustrating morning on the game today.

This sounds oddly familiar.
There's a game (if this is considered advertising please say so and I'll edit my post) by DICE called Bad Company 2 which has a similar problem: You are playing an online match and all the sudden you disconnect. Turns out there's a bug negotiating open ports and when a new player connects to the server or if the server communication changes some people may get DC'd. This only happens to some people though.
There's a simple way to fix it though if the problem is similar (no idea if it is but it's worth a shot I suppose). Disable UPnP on your router and try playing EVE and post your results.

I get the socket error, but today I noticed a new clue (perhaps?) Game came up with message (words to the effect) ' your chat channel has been closed (wish I had written it down) then teh game died taking (as usual) my entire broadbamd connection with it, which this time fortunately reset itself and started up again. Eve is clearly screwing with my wireless modem.
