Howdy,
After a little bit of luck in a fiction competition, I was finally able to buy myself a beautiful new Phantasm cruiser. I have an extremely low skillpoint level though (2.5 mil SP )and have a horrible fear that my new ship will be suicide ganked while I run missions (Level 1 & 2) in High-Sec with it. At present I'm working on my shield skills and plan to fit it for shield tanking (all advice gratefully accepted).
My question is, how should I fit the Phantasm so that it would be effective for missioning but able to escape if I get into trouble? What sort of ships would I be able to take out with it?

You can't If people want your ship, they will get it. If I see your Phantasm in HS, I will risk it also.
good luck

Well... I have a few more sp... well, quite a bit more, like 13 mill or smt on this char, and I just got a phantasm bpc. I'll build it and sell it tbh. As an amarr the shield skills suck a bit and people will just primary it...
tho maybe i'll rat in 0.0 with it for a while first
nah... sell it...
i'll buy a few bc's or something. meh.

lol. A phatasm is a 170 mill ship, not worth doing any ganking over :P If you do, you serriously need to get out and see some new systems :P.
A phantamsn is an axcelent ship tho, more so for PvP.

I assume that is a troll. (not you OP). Unless you were planning to fit it completely complex/faction stuff, people wont bother to suicide gank you (allthough you can never be sure). ---------------------------------------------

Well, I'm not going to be spending a colossal amount of money on it and aside from moving it to my home station tonight, I won't be missioning with it for a while, because of Rule 1. Once I have some decent defensive skills though and work on my turret skill a bit more, I might risk it.
If shield skills suck for Amarr, should I swap to training up armour based skills instead? I did try armour tanking once and it seemed to eat my capacitor alive.

Edited by: Andrea Skye on 30/03/2009 12:08:43 Messing with eft i came up with:
3x focused medium beam lasers 2x Nos
Large sheild booster II 2x mission specific hardeners cap recharger 10mm ab (or another cap recharger if u want more cap)
damage control II 2x heat sink
drones 3x warrior
Rigs, sheild resist or safe gaurds if your being cheap, ccc/s if u splashing out :P
That should tank ANY level 1 or 2 and even handle most level 3s, hell it could probably handle a few level 4s... It tanks 350 ish dps for 1 min20 sec with my skills, which is plenty of time to cut down on incoming dps.
Id recommend going to ammar space too, as you will kill sanshas and bloods very quickly. :P

your not going to get suicide ganked in highsec.
running level 1 and 2 missions in a phantasm is overkill lol.
you might as well use an arbitrator or caracal , equally effiecent .... they stole my sig :'( |

This is very true for a high skilled pilot. At her nooby skills it should be fine... might even be dangerous at times. |

Heh, its a fair point.
I'm hoping that while I use it for missioning and train my skills, I'll also get a better feel for how the ship acts in combat. Eventually, I'd like to start trying it in PvP, once I can afford to replace it >.>

If you have poor shield-tanking skills you can: - try a terrible armor tank - try a laughable hull tank - try a poor shield tank
My suggestion? Sell it and buy/fit a Harbi (comparable ship, but a moderate armor tank instead of a moderate shield tank). Or save it until you have the ability to shield tank or you have the ISK so you don't feel bad losing it in PVP.
It is a great ship, but it is definitely skill-intensive to fly it with any success.

At your stated skill level your two best options are actually A: Sell it, have a crap ton of isk (for a new player) to spend as you choose on insurable ships and stuff to learn in. B: Save it as a rainy day ship, skill up, and realize about 9 months from now "holy s*** I have a phantasm"
C: Fly it now...not the best option.

Just go for C, it is a good mission runner (the tracking helps alot, and the harb doesnt have that), and with a decent setup you shouldnt lose it anyway so you can sell it later. Having a ship gathering dust in your hangar is pretty stupid when you can have fun with it. ---------------------------------------------

The Phantasm is a PvP ship, not a mission ship. While it can do level 1 and 2 missions, that has more to do with the fact that level 1 and 2 missions are a joke than the Phantasm's amazing PvE power. You're going to run into serious problems trying to run an active tank and cap-hungry lasers (the PvP Phantasm avoids this problem with a buffer tank, but you can't do that in missions), and you're still going to lose to a Drake by a solid margin.
However, if you insist on abusing the ship like this, a couple things to consider:
1) You are in no danger of getting suicide ganked. Killing a faction cruiser would cost more than anything the gankers can reasonably expect to get from you, unless they've already scanned you and found that you have tons of expensive faction mods fitted (which I hope you won't). However, you ARE in danger of them trying to get you with aggro tricks, so you still have to be careful.
2) 2.5 million SP is incredibly low for a faction cruiser, especially an Amarr faction cruiser. Again, level 1 and 2 missions are a joke, so you might get away with it, but don't get yourself into any situation which would be even remotely difficult or you will probably die.
Honestly, the best thing to do is buy a Drake and keep the Phantasm in your hangar until you have the SP to use it properly in PvP. -----------

Phantasm is an awesome ship.. Before even taking it out i'd seriously skill up both Ammar and Caldari Cruiser to at least level 4... No point in taking a ship out costing 150-175 million if you can't fly it properly. And beeing able to use a ship to it's full potential is just so much more fun than having to run for cover every five minutes..

for a low sp pilot i would just get a harby and call it good. there's no need to risk losing a faction ship running missions like that. i would use it to show off in the killboards.

Well, I managed to get my beautiful Phantasm back to my little hidey hole of space without trouble and even took it for a spin for a couple of missions.
Even with some very basic equipment, I can see that it is a very powerful ship and I imagine in more experienced hands it could be truly devestating. As such, aside from a very very occasional mission, it will stay safely in my hanger until I'm in a position to use it fully for the terrifying world that is PvP.
What would you suggest as a mission ship that follows a similar vein to the Phantasm - something with a strong focus on lasers and shield tanking?

In PvP: You will be primaried, and killed first. Without doubt. (If you want to Pvp with it, this is what will happen.)
In Pve: It is a pretty decent ship, and you don't have to worry about getting suicide ganked. It is not worth it. -------------------

Sansha ships are the only laser/shield tankers tbh.

Sub level 4 missions can get away with shield tanked amarr. In fact, I'd say they are more optimal than an armor tank. A shield tanked omen would do just fine on level 1s and 2s. The idea is to burn the enemy away with lasers before your LSE buffer is gone.
I speedran level 3 missions in a shield-tanked harbinger when grinding standings for 4s. That said, I have a lot of SPs in the harbinger and my tank never really was used - it was "gank everything before you get shot at too much". So yes, amarr can certainly shield tank some ships in both pve and pvp.
That said, Amarr really is about the armor tank at the end of the day. You wont get through level 4s with a shield tanked amarr BS - they lack both the mids and CPU to do so. Sansha ships are fun, but they are a small (and extremely expensive) fraction of the ships available to you. Be prepared to invest in armor tank skills (repair systems V, hull upgrades V, comp skills IV) if you want to stay amarr.
