Ok, here's the thing, this weekend i went out of town to see my folks. I got bored a bit and i downloaded Eve to check out how it runs on their computer.
I had a bit of a surprise: the CPU of that PC its the same as mine, a dual-core X2 processor at the exactly same speed, the video card on the other hand its a poor nVidia onboard 7xxx series card. Well, the game was barely playable, i had 20-30 fps(no surprise here), but, here's the funny thing, the CPU usage was really low, about lets say 20+ percent.
Now, lets talk about my computer, i have the same CPU but i have an Ati Radeon 4850 card (4Gb RAM, 500 GB RAID HDD). Using the same settings as on my folks computer the game stresses my CPU like hell, i think the minimum CPU usage is around 60+ percent. How in the god's name is this possible ? I demand some explanation because this is pure ******ness...
(As a side note, i love what the engine can do and i love this game but i'm a bit of a geek and thinks like this make me mad :P)

Well seeing that the GPU cannot keep up with the rendering it could suggest that the CPU will not process more than what the GPU does seeing that the Premium is more GPU intensive than Classic was. If the GPU isnt a good one e.g the 7xxxS series it will not 'give' the CPU anymore information than it renders, since the ATI 4xxx series is able to give the CPU all teh information it can the CPu will do all the work it is 'supposed' to do.
I could of course be wrong and your computer it doing p2p , msn, steam and xfire etcetc. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

No, i have a very clean OS, EVE is one of the most CPU intensive application i currently have, even the other games seem to be more gentle with my computer.
And, if your first explanation would be the true that would still be kinda stupid, EVE looks exactly the same on both computers, the difference is in the FPS, i have really high FPS on my computer but i dont like the idea of the game using that much CPU for getting as higher FPS as possible, i should be able to set some limit then so i would not stress the computer so much if not necessary.
(Anyway, just for the record, i used another slower Ati video card (Radeon HD 2600 XT) and i have the same results, i think the CPU usage is the same.)

Not really thinking that the GPU in order to keep the game updated to a reasonable level will have to be offloading some more work onto it.
Assuming you get over 75fps you could set it to interval 1 to ensure the card does not do any more work than you could see
About the FPS meter, EVE online's UI is less than optimal and can cause serious fps drops when multiple windows are open. The fps meter not only update rather rapidly but also has a quite accurate graph, this will require a lot of CPU and GPU power and can reduce total FPS by 10%. It really does mak sense.
If you put teh other more powerful GPU into teh other computer you should see the CPU usage go to a similar level. If not it is a either a driver poblem with your PC or they are not exactly the same. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

The 4850 video card is much more powerful than my CPU, i believe it should take most of the processing, i dont understand why the game relies so much on the CPU. And about the frame rate, i get more than 100 FPS, it would be nice if i could set tome limit so i could decrease the CPU stress.

Press Esc, got to "Display & Graphics" and set the "Present Interval" to "Interval One". This should limit the FPS to 60 and reduce your CPU load a bit.

Faster your GPU, the more usage your CPU will get due to the fact it can do a lot more without having to wait for other components. --- Grez: I shot the sheriff Kalazar: But I could not lock the Deputy BECAUSE OF FALCON |

Quoted for truth. If your GPU isn't top-end, your CPU isn't going to need to work very hard either.

I've just built a new system with a I7 920 and GTX 260(216.) I was shocked at 270-300fps (in station,) my GPU was running quite warm and making that squealing sound they sometimes do.
I found resetting the Interval from immediate to default brought down my frame rate to a reasonable 75fps. My GPU now runs less warm and seemingly under a lot less stress.
Thanks for the tips guys

Thanks for the tip man, that did the trick

That just turns vertical sync on - wikipedia it to know what it is.
If your machine cannot cope with running 'hot' or 'warm' (or at 100%, should of just said that, it's much easier) then you desperately need to seek out a better cooling or better components from a better manufacturer. --- Grez: I shot the sheriff Kalazar: But I could not lock the Deputy BECAUSE OF FALCON |
