Wat? With a 45mil sp amarr character your lasers should be literally burning right though ships and still hitting another ship on the other side for omgwtfbbq damage. How much of that is in gunnery?

Okay I'll fall for it, but in 2003 there actually was a boxed set release. Very thin pamphlet (it could not be described as a game manual by any stretch).
For those that remember the olden days, eve can still feel fresh. As we're all playing in the same area as everyone else, new and old, and the "rules" can change every six months while keeping the basic feel the same, it's the only game on line or off line that has me coming back to it.
Sure we all need a break every so often, perhaps real life perhaps for a bit more perspective from protracted whinage and corp breakups. But it's still part of the game that keeps us coming back. Few people can say they've kept their account going AND logging in to do more than change skills over the last x years.
Self Motivational Game Genre should be attempted more often I think, so far no game has got close to Eve's characteristics and feel.

I fell in love with Eve for the same reason I used to love UO: PvP is costly and you can actually lose something. ((Note: I loved UO from beta in 97 til they made it a carebear game)) I have tried various other mmo's when the "Eve Burnout" strikes me, but I always come home. Not only the pvp, either. I think it's the most beautifully rendered game out, will be for some time, and the offline skills design really appeals to people with time constraints (like myself). I don't have to be here 24 hours a day to keep up my character, so I can compete with even the powergamers, to an extent. A very unique and completely awesome feature. Frankly, I can't "get into" Age of Conan, which I was excited about buying. Aside from not having time to invest in it, I always think about hitting the top level and the game ending. In Eve I have three characters of various age and none of them will ever be completed.
The TL version (a short story)
November of last year my aunt (a fellow gamer) takes me out to get my birthday present. Much to my dismay it wasn't a pair of buxom strippers and a can of whipped cream, but a trip to EB games. She picks up a WoW box and hands it to me, telling me she's been playing it for a year or so and loves it, it's like UO, etc etc. Basically a sales pitch for me to leave Eve and game with her, which I admit I miss from time to time. Not wanting to seem ungrateful, I give it a fair shot. After some mindnumbing chinese water-torture quests (kill 50 of this, run 100 miles, climb the highest peak and spit into the wind, etc) I have a decently powerful mage and enough gear to compete. So, I give a yell on Vent to my trusty aunt, asking her where this great battleground is. after the directions are given, the conversation turns for the worse...
"So, where are you?" "Heading to the bank to get rid of some valuables I don't want to lose" "What?" "Valuables, I can't afford to replace some of this stuff yet." "You can't lose them" "Huh?" "You can't lose them, carry whatever you want" "I can't... wait, so if I can't lose mine, I guess they can't lose theirs?" "Right." "So I can't loot them? I can kill but can't loot. That right?" "Right" "So what do you get for pvping?" "Points and some rewards." "I can't lose anything, my enemy can't lose anything, and we all get a reward when the dust settles." "Yep" "Then why bother pvp'ing when they turned it into a damned quest?! Go kill 10 enemies and here's a nice new staff." "For fun, I guess." "IT'S NOT FUN IF THERE'S NO RISK INVOLVED"
I'm grateful for the space back on my hard-drive at any rate......

Amazing belief you have there. It was on the store shelves back in the day. It really was. I no longer have the box, but I distinctly recall buying it.
Anyone remember the "Zezman Maneuver?" Check out the old version of Eve and what it used to look like.

LOL, wow, I remember that I think.
I still have that CD from the box. Too bad it's useless :( It would take at least a week to patch...and they don't have those patches anyway... (\_/) (O.o) (> <) The writer of the article did not quote himself- Cortes |

It was originaly released as a box game, I still have the box as well. But at some point there where some issues with the publisher and EVE went the download route.

I picked up EVE when I looked over my roommate's shoulder and saw the pretty ships and lasers all over the place (mining lasers, but i didn't know that at the time). I've taken a break or two since then, but I don't think I'll be leaving anytime soon. - Always be Happy, Never be satisfied. |

Back in the day when the only ship types were Frigates, Cruisers, Battleships and Industrials, I mentioned in a thread how cool it would be to have Destroyers, Battlecruisers and Capitol ships. Lo and behold! Eve developers had the same idea. Great minds and all.
Same thing when I mentioned that it would be interesting if you could jury rig your ship, and salvage wrecks of ships. Those things also became reality. I began to suspect that perhaps Eve Developers do listen to their players ideas after all, or perhaps its a case of parallel invention. Quote:

It was on store shelves in the beginning. I typed out every letter, and used up all characters one is allowed in a single post. But thanks for the compliment (thinking that this was a professional review).

For me, this is why eve online is the best:
-The best PVP in an MMO - period -Offline Skill Training -Diminishing Returns to keep it about player skills instead of player level

It's not very hard to rate EVE as "the greatest mmo of all time," as there isn't a lot of competition. As a general principal, MMO's are worse than awful.
The only thing that could compare is Planetside, except that game got worse with every single update and was left to languish.

there are quite a few decent mmo's out there. city of heroes and wow being two of em. but here's where eve grew on me: when i hit end-game for the other two, i died a little inside. ive been on and off with eve since beta! but it's only since last december that ive consistently been subscribing. it had to do with:
- finally getting the SP to fly advanced ships with T2 weapons and relevant skills (yes, it matters in pvp, at least the t2 weapons part) - finding a great corp with chill people who like to do different things (sup TI) - learning how to survive - and the most important one: becoming almost completely desensitized to ship loss, which prevents eve burn-outs that i had before; this was the biggest hurdle to overcome....but once i learned how to make isk and to pvp smart in cheap ships, it was good
so why did i play the other two mmo's? simple, they had a few things eve will never have:
- i could log on and instantly do my thing; if i wanted to pvp, id immediately get into a queue and pvp; if i wanted to do a raid on the other continent, id teleport, instantly find a group, and do it (clone jumps are a ***** due to standing requirement) - no punishment for being stupid in pvp --> no burnout - wow's environments were bloody attractive, and very well animated! (eve is sloooowly getting there)
but yes, once u learn to love it, eve is really a cool game.

I have a similar experience. My first MMO was EQ and I've dabbled in others but they all seemed to be just a remake of EQ. Until I found EVE. It was so different that I really want to keep playing it.
Not to say EQ was bad; it was ****ing awesome. I just got burned out on that style of game. WoW IS a good game (though the community leaves much to be desired) but comparing it to EVE is pointless, they are far too different to compare. It just depends on what you want from an MMO. I wanted something with more depth so I like EVE.
