Hey all! Just thought I'd share with you my latest build, Just got done fixing up my bike (Sorry for the huge picture )
I know she's not much of a looker but it only costs ú4 to fill the tank, she does 35mph AND is good exercise. All I've got left to do is put a pannier on her it's all good to go! I am thinking of replacing the single exhaust with a double though, in the hopes that it'll make it a little quieter.
So, what do you think?
(yes, that IS a stack of CED video disks in the corner there )

Edited by: Benco97 on 25/03/2009 11:41:14 Indeed it is! It's a Raleigh Activator MKI (That's 17 years old by the way ) with a 48cc two-stroke engine. Nice isn't it?

It's...a velomoteur? a mountain bike model? It looks mint...haven't seen one of those since I was living in france for a few years a lifetime ago. I love the sound they make. How many gears does your hairdryer have?
It's cool man, must make journeying to/from work/study a bit more pleasant. Back when I were a lad, I had to cycle 25 miles to work, uphill in both directions...and not just hills but pretty much vertical mind. And it was always snowing, didn't have grit back then. Our bikes only had one gear, none of this change gear malarky. And if you wanted to sit down...well we couldn't afford saddles so we just had the metal poles. -------------

Sorry, it's not a VTlo moteur, it's a regular Raleigh Activator which I have attached an engine to. It took me a couple of days to get everything working smoothly (I'm not particularly mechanically minded and I only had a small Phillips-head and broken spanner..), the clutch was a particular problem because I managed to mess it up amazingly but it's all done now.
The engine has no gearing, RPM is controlled directly via the twist handle throttle, to start it just get peddling and engage the clutch. With the clutch disengaged it works exactly as the original bike did, an 18speed mountain bike.
It is GREAT fun and a good way of getting around, it's very hilly where I live and I'm not very athletic so the engine is a vast help. It hasn't quite run in yet so I'm expecting a slight performance increase which I intend to squash by putting a pannier on it

NICE, i really like it, considering you build it yourself.. Reminds me of my driving sofa i once build
Once you master that speed devil, of the hills get too high, i have a 525cc 4 stroke engine you can get for cheap

I think you've underestimated the hills around here, I've seen a fiat lupo fail to get up one of them.
Look at it this way: Pushbike + hills + me = No travel, No exercise Pushbike + Engine + Hills + Me = Travel wherever I like and get exercise doing it
I don't ride solely on the engine, it's only there to help. Peddle on flats, Coast on slopes, Engine + Peddle on hills. Sorted.
As such, the bike gives me a degree of freedom (I can't drive a car for medical reasons) and is a good outlet for energy while getting some nice fresh air and exercise.

You put that together?? That's great stuff dude, very nice job. Is that a battery or some sorta dynamo? Hope it's rainproof
And the obvious question...where did the motor come from?? -------------

Well, the little black box connected to the sparkplug is the magneto, no battery required for this little thing and it's..mostly..waterproof thanks to a liberal application of 'trician's tape. The engine itself? I actually bought it with this in mind, found a bloke who does this sort of thing for a living in England and he sent me some mechanical parts and tada, one motorized pushbike (After a whole lot of sweating and swearing anyway).
So far I've been about 45-50 miles on it, was one hairy moment when I got up to a little village called Horeb above Llandysul and my handlebars came loose but I survived, got it fixed and went on my merry way.
I'm glad everyone likes it and I've met three people while riding it so far that thought it was great.

So this is a KIT build? Basically the engine + gas tank + connecting parts?
OH DUDE! I SO want one of these! How much did it set you back? And do you know if it's possible to get parts in the States?
EDIT:
Well, Ask.com is my friend. I found THIS.
Not bad. Too pricey for me ATM, but maybe as a fun side-project once my other major home projects are done! Get me a cheap Toys-R-Us mountain bike and slap this puppy on it! Woo!

That looks to be exactly the same engine and kit as I got except your exhaust is black, not sure of the significance of that. As for finding kits in the US... I thought these sort of things were pretty popular and well known over there, over here they are unheard of but there are lots of videos of Americans riding them so I'd assume they are easy to source.
This is where I got mine from, seemed like a good website with plenty of info and warnings about everything as well as a nice gallery of completed builds (Which put mine to absolute SHAME by the way, mine is definitely the minmatar model)
Normally these things have a dubious legal standing in the UK (Because all our government want to do is stop you from doing anything) and must be taxed, MOT'd and insured as well as having passed a CBT, However, I have found a little loophole in it all in the form of Mr "Vehicle Excise and Registration act 1994", Chapter 22, Subchapter 2, section 18. "A vehicle (Including a cycle with an attachment for propulsion by mechanical power) which (a) is adapted, and used or kept on a road, for an invalid, and (b) does not exceed 508 kilograms in weight unladen, is an exempt vehicle"
As my Osteoarthritis prevents me from driving I have looked and looked and looked for a solution and I found it in the form of a motorised pushbike. If I didn't have this affliction then I would surely have a difficult time insuring the bike and using it legally...or I'd just drive a car, whatever
Having looked into the matter at length it would seem that most US residents get a much better time of it with many states not requiring any licensing, taxes or fess of any sort. Lucky buggers. Still, if anyone is interested in this sort of thing then it'd pay to know your local legislation with regards to motorized bicycles.

Im positive something like that would never be legal where i live.. it would prolly be labeled as a "30km/t scooter", yet it wouldnt really exist as a scoot, given its originally a bike.. and hence prolly cant be insured/get a license plate..
But thumbs op for doing that project, and biking (somewhat with help )while having Osteoarthritis. You're a cool dude in my book
