I've been trying to look for a forum thread with some feedback on this.
Im not a very fast miner, but I have been having fun chomping up roids and refining them to sell - However.. im at the point now where im stuck with that to do.
I was told not to bother placing sell orders (I make 5 jumps to do so in quite a populated area with alot of labs) but instead to fill buy orders (means jumping up to 12, at a similar price to what im selling mine at) simply down to loosing any profit I may make in taxes.
I dont mind mining to fill others buy orders, if its reasonable, but is that what the general masses do?
What do you do? Any feedback would be great. Be gentle. :p

I, quite honestly, would do whichever brought me more ISK for my effort. Seeing as you're paying the taxes either way, are you making sales 5 jumps away? Are those areas in the same region?

The 5 jumps takes me just into a different region where mins sell for a better price, also the buy orders there are for much bigger quantities.

This depends on the price of the mineral in question. Tax shouldn't really be a consideration until the margin between the buy and sell order price is about 1-2% (whatever your tax rate + broker fee rate is).
Occasionally you'll see manufacturers in remote systems who will pay a nice premium over the sell orders in the more popular areas.
Typically, though, you'll waste a lot of time making single trips in an industrial. If you don't have a freighter, just save your minerals until you have enough to fill a freighter and create a courier contract to have it delivered. The extra time mining will balance out the fees.
If you watch your mineral prices over time, you'll see that the same high orders pick up in a cyclical basis. You could either negotiate a deal direct with the manufacturer or just place a sell order there ahead of time at his usual high rate so he'll pick it up (or just wait for him to create the order and do a direct sell).
If you can spare the extra time before you receive your ISK, then this is a good way to get more for your mining. When you trade in the hubs, you'll end up competing with traders. Our profit depends on our ability to rollover product; we'll drop our prices if it means we can sell our product more quickly by cutting you out. This gives us back our isk for reinvestment. Miners, on the other hand, increase the value of their time by holding out for higher prices.

I use to like to find system with large buy orders at a good price and then mine around them, vs mining in some random spot and then hauling it. Another thing is to find out who is putting up the large buy orders and contract them directly and see if they want to buy from you via a contract.

When you sell to buy orders, you only get slapped by the trade tax (1% base, 0.5% with accounting level 5). When you put up a sell order, you get both the trade tax AND a broker fee (1% base, 0.75% with broker relations level 5, modified BOTH by NPC corp and NPC faction standings to anywhere from around 0.25% to over 1%).
The only issue is just how fast your sell orders would sell (if at all), and how much more could you mine during the time it would take you to make those extra jumps hauling.

Don't forget all the time needed to fly back and forth to update the orders, considering it's in a different region.

This? Your mine the minerals you won't lose any profit from taxes.. its ALL profit!
However, I would not worry about putting up sell orders UNLESS they were selling for at leat 5% more then the buy orders.. If you can not get an extra %5 or more profit (-1% to -3% taxes) from sell orders its NOT worth the hasle. ..
