I found a wormhole, and nothing seemed different about this one than any other really. I checked the info, saw that neither message was displayed indicating an imminent collapse. It led into unknown space so I doublechecked everything and got ready to go through. I hit the button to warp through when a message popped up saying "This wormhole has already collapsed". Bewildered, I figured perhaps this is a bug. I go to hit info on it again, and as I do I watch the whole thing dissapear within maybe half a second.
I know that they collapse, but I thought there were only two factors that could affect how/when; mass going through, and a pre-alloted amount of time not known to the player. The two messages in the info screen of the status of these factors were something like: "The wormhole has begun to decay, and probably wont last another day", and "This wormhole has has its stability disrupted by passing ships, but not yet to a critical degree." Im sure that neither one of these is the worst message for how long till collapse. I've seen the first message on other wormholes say something like "This wormhole is dangerously close to collapse".
I guess my question is, was what I witnessed a bug of some sort, or can wormholes really collapse like that with no "danger" message in the info screen? The time difference between me seeing the info screen for the wormhole and me trying to go through could not have been more than maybe 20-30 secs. I always thought as long as you were always careful you should be ok, making sure to check the status on a regular basis. If they can collapse with no indicators, this changes my travel plans with wormholes somewhat.

I've seen "This wormhole is reaching the end of its natural life". Doesn't really answer your question, but it's some additional info

I suppose someone just jumped out from it and collapsed it. Since they would be cloaked as with any gate you would not have seen them.

Gotta admit that it didn't "last another day"

Edited by: Xia Kairui on 18/03/2009 15:25:25 On SiSi I found a WH in a low sec system and shared its location in the "wormholes" test channel. Since it was still there the next day I decided to play around in it with an Orca and a corp mate, and several other folks joined as well, including another Orca.
The passage of the two Orcas (and an unknown number of other ships since the Wh was relatively public knowledge) caused the WH to reach the "This wormhole has has its stability disrupted by passing ships, but not yet to a critical degree" stage. We fooled around a bit and then decided to leave. The other Orca jumped, and the WH collapsed, going from the "Not critical" to "Poof" states in one fell swoop.
So, the morale: don't ever believe a wormhole, they are lying sods, especially if you shove big ships up theirs :P
In other words: yes, they can collapse without further warning.

The first wormhole I found has the "won't last another day" and "not significantly effected by mass"-messages. Upon finding it, I got a bit "Do I dare go through in my rigged covops or do I get something cheap to zip try for a sneak peak?" SO I warped to a gate, changed my mind and warped back, deciding to brave the unknown in the Cheetah afterall, but then it was gone. Bookmark was at the wormhole. Probed a bit to see if it had moved, but nope.
And I talked to a guy in local who also said that it had just disappeared. So yes, confirming that wormholes can disappear before you think they will.

I had a similar experience the other day. Two corpmates and i went through a WH in high sec space, found some sleepers, killed and salvaged them. We had taken 2 BC and 1 prober through the WH. The messages on show info were as the OP indicated. So, my mates left the WH, and as I was leaving I got a message similar to 'As you warp you are surprised to see that the wormhole has collapsed behind you'. Sure enough - it was gone.
I felt particularly lucky that day, since i would have been stuck inside in my Drake, no probes. Moral: don't trust the WH! They are deceitful. -------------- We build the stuff you need! Call for more info. |

Inconsistent descriptions:
I had a similar situation happen where the wormhole in 0.4 k-space had 'not significantly impacted' or some such. I jumped through in a covops, really just to scan around. An hour or so later the WH had collapsed. The k-space system was so quiet, I suspect the WH had timed out, but there were certainly no messages to expect that was imminent. So I'll save for a different post how I waded through 15 signatures to find an exit. I looked carefully at the description on the w-space side and the k-space side of the exit this time. They varied significantly. On the w-space side the exit wormhole sounded fine, on the k-space side after I had jumped through, the descriptions were 'significantly affected, collapse within a day' or some such. So I was curious if others have noticed that inconsistency.

Had a brand new worm collapse on me earlier today, just after DT. It had the "less than a day, not disrupted" message as well.
Either the messages do not update properly or there is something funky going on worm-city, I am leaning towards the former explanation (database related most likely).

Sorry guys, I spilled my coffee on the wormhole control panel.
