Edited by: Chaos313 on 15/03/2009 20:03:08 Hello all,
I am very new to EVE, and have a bit of interest in mining. I read a few guides and decided to pick Amarr since the idea of lasers was more appealing than the other weapons at the time. However, I am reading through version three of Halada's excellent mining guide, and discovered that Amarr does not have a mining cruiser, nor a battleship with mining bonuses. However, the Caldari cruiser has a huge bonus to mining yield.
Does that mean that for an Amarr, my only real choice for mining is to pursue mining barges? Unfortunately, that is at least 25 days of training away...
Mining in a frigate, even jetcan mining, doesn't seem particularly efficient since it can only use two mining lasers at a time, and that leaves me completely defenseless.
Am I missing something? Can Amarr mine successfully with something other than a frigate? I would be extremely grateful if someone could help me understand if I made a mistake with Amarr?
Thanks!

Edited by: Galehund on 15/03/2009 20:18:30 forget about race as a fixet set of skills like you might be used to in other games.
in eve, given time, you can do anything and train everything, no limits, no silly classes and no predetermined setups.
as for mining, what you want is a mining barge and then a exhumer(hulk), fitted with t2 strip miners and t2 crystals so you can proberly illumunatet the roids in the name of the empress

Edited by: Seraph Castillon on 15/03/2009 21:17:39 First of all: if you want to fly Amarr ships then do so. Don't cross train only for a mining cruiser. Why? If you want to mine at a profitable level you'll be doing it in a Retriever, Covetor (Mining Barges) or Hulk (Exhumer) anyway. And they have nothing to do with the racial space ship command skill tree.
Do Amarr have mining ships?
Tormentor (Amarr frigate) has a series of mining bonusses, including a 20% yield bonus.
Arbitrator (Amarr cruiser) has a 10% bonus to mining yield per skill level. That's not as good as the Osprey, but not bad at all.
Also covered in the mining guide is the Apocalypse (Amarr Battleship) that does fine for mining.
While mining, if no open launcher slots, look to drones for defence.
I suggest you continue training for ships you want to fly. This really keeps your options open. If at some point you decide you want to be a miner then take up mining barges. If you choose that path I suggest going straight for the hulk as anything less you can more or less match or surpass mining in a battleship.

Besides, if you just starting, and interested in mining, please don't let 25 days of training scare you. If you want to get good at it, you are looking to months and months of training :)
And, as the others said, don't let your choice of race mislead you, anyone can fly Hulks equally well.
Good luck out there :)

forget about cruiser and especially battleship mining.
Any real deal and serious wannabe miner will train towards barges, and you can get in to a retriever in no time, and during that time you can easily earn the 4 mil to pay for it.
If you're interested in mining, you're interested in barges. There is no mining without barges and especially exhumers.

The Amarr do have a mining cruiser: the Arbitrator. Like the Gallente Vexor, its mining bonus is to drone yield, not mining laser yield. Having drone skills is a good thing in the long run, though. I did just fine with a Vexor until I was able to fly a Retriever. Having combat drones in that Retriever enabled me to solo mine in 0.5 systems and kill the rats before they could do much damage.
Its a guide, not a rulebook. Feel free to improvise and enjoy your playtime.
I promise nothingÖ. --CCP Prism X |

I would have to agree with this. I went Tormentor < Augaror < Harbinger < Retriever but I would go straight to barge if I had to do it again. While the training requirement to get to harbi wasn't all that much the whole process seems like a waste of time in hindsight.
As a new player you need to understand the difference in mining yeilds with strip miners (Mining Barges) and anything you can do with mining lasers (Frig, Cruiser, BC, or BS) is huge. Ideally, you want to get into a barge as soon as you can.
On the other hand if you want to do other things in EVE besides just mine, training up cruisers is eventually going to need to be done anyway.
