Quote: After some planning I did this quickly an easily with a destroyer, the catalyst, on a 4 day old character and this is my first time playing. Almost all of my skills are level 1 or 2. Spent about 5 hours reading up, trying different things and researching.
The key for me was to get in VERY close and then just keep blasting away. Set orbit to 500m, ended up at just under 1k. He misses 75% of the time at that range.
Equipment:
6x limited light neutron baster I 2x limited light electron baster I (had to use two of these to fit within the power capacity) small shield booster I small tapered capacitor infusion I 2x overdrive injector system I beta hull mod inertial stabilizers
using antimatter amo on all guns, 200 capacitor charges.
Every time my capacitor got under 1/2 I used a capacitor charge and had the shield booster on 70% of the time. Could not have done it without these two either. The 8 basters and his nosferatu eat up capacitor fast but the 200 cap charges are more than enough. Think I used 7.
Swapping out a weapon for a nosferatu and switching the capacitor charger for a dampener could work too. Wish I could try that, but he's dead ;) hehe
This worked perfectly fine for me.

I put a general solution for Dagan into a thread in the "New Players Q&A" last week. Note that the Dagan encounter seems to be intended as a lesson in custom-fitting your ship for a difficult single target. I dont think it should be done with brute force.
Dagan is easy to kill in any correctly-fitted Destroyer Dagan's exact fit varies - there is no single perfect solution Dagan always has very high resists to 2 or 3 damage types Some Dagan encounters can be completed in a Frigate, but not all Some Dagan encounters are difficult in a rookie-level Cruiser

Edited by: Chana Kor on 22/08/2009 14:48:29 Thought I'd relate my experience in case it helps someone. I also had trouble killing him with my Caracal. The solution was to use a webber. That slowed him sufficiently that my Scourge heavy missiles consistently did max damage. This and orbiting as close as possible let me keep ahead of his damage dealing and wear down his tank faster than he could boost it. My single ECM Multispectrum jammer was a waste of space; it jammed him maybe 1 in 15 tries. Still took a moderately long time though. |

I've distilled the following from various posts. Most of us would agree on the following:
1) You do not need t2 gear to kill Dagan. 2) Your ability to fit for a specific target is more important than the size of your ship or your accumulated skill points. 3) Dagan will drain your cap. Either be cap stable or find a way to recharge. 4) Come prepared for a long fight. 5) DAGAN'S RESISTANCES VARY. EXPERIMENT until you find the damage type that averages the most damage. Corollary: there is no one ship fit that will work for everyone. 6) Above all else, ORBIT CLOSE. Even in a cruiser.

I killed Dagan with a 4 day-old character flying a Destroyer.
After much frustration with different Rifter, Slasher, and Thrasher setups I finally Set up a Thrasher (Minmater Destroyer,) with the following:
High: (7) 200mm Autocannon I (EMP S ammo) (1) NOS (not used)
Med: Afterburner Cap Recharger Cap Booster (not used)
Low: (2) Gyrostabalizer I
All I did was: (1) Afterburner right up to him and start orbiting at 1000m on afterburner (2) Start my 7 Autocannons 1 at a time, letting each one fire four times before starting the next. (3) let each Autocannon reload and then start it firing again, ensuring that the timing remains spread at least 4 firing cycles
Results: He only hit me twice, both on the approach. He was dead right after the second reload.
Notes: I had killed his buddies on a previous approach, but that part is easy anyway.
Spacing the start up of Autocannons is important, because otherwise he can recharge almost all of his shield while the guns reload.
He appears to be a PASSIVE SHIELD TANKER, so a NOS does nothing. I made a previous run at him with three NOS and 5 guns, and couldn't get his shield down
Conclusion: With this exact build it was incredibly easy, with any other Minmatar Frigate or Destroyer setup it was impossible with only basic level 3-4 combat skills

I had read a few horror stories about this guy while halfway through the epic arc, but the encounter turned out surprisingly well. My character had about 1.2m skillpoints. I maintained a 22k distance in a Vexor while 5 medium scout drones did the rest. He never opened fire on myself or my drones, which I was puzzled (but not disappointed) by.

This has to be a purely psychological effect. He recharges x every y seconds, wit x being a variable amount depending on his current shield strength. Once you have all your weapons going, your damage output can be considered to be an average. Gaps in your damage production will not, in any way, increase your target's shield regeneration. Just because you continuously do damage doesn't mean you stop him regenerating his shields.

Most NPCs are unaffected by NOS, though you can get juice out of them for yourself, so NOS isn't entirely useless.

I killed him, just today in my Thrasher. I used 6x200mm Gallium Machine guns, 1x 280mm Howitzer and 1x Malkuth launcher. I used Titanium Sabot S in all guns and plain bloodclaw missiles in my launcher. Other than the guns, my desty has no other offensive modules (shield extenders, shield recharger, beta reactor control and beta shield relay).
I orbited him at 1000m and just poured round after round into him. I only had to reload the 6 guns once, and the Howitzer about 5 times. I was doing better damage (avg of 5-12) using EMP-s vs the Sabots (4-10), but EMP-s was 10 jumps away.
It took probably 15 minutes of orbiting and firing, but he eventually went down. Never broke my shield tank, either.
That damn cruiser in the mission before Dagan was 10 times tougher. Cap sucker, 200 damage volly strike, and fast as a damned frigate. Had to call a friend with a battleship to kill him.

I fly Gallente Catalyst for this one. Had a lot of trouble the first few times, but figured out the trick:
Fitting -
Hi power-Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon x5 with Antimatter charges, Dual Anode Pulse Particle Stream x1 with Multifrequency crystal. (I trained lasers as they are darn useful).
Medium power used 1 Cap Recharger II, 1 Cold Arc Jet Afterburner.
Low Power used Damage Control I, Overdrive Injector System II, Armor Repairer I.
Drone - 1 Hobgoblin I
How did I attack? First I went in and stomped the Escorts. Then I Orbited at 500meters, and turned on the Damage Control + my afterburner. The drone and the laser made the difference here. His shields are the toughest part of the whole thing; also, when my first round of antimatter was getting low, around 10 left, I stopped 2 cannons to reload; that helped stagger his tanking. If you get more then 1500meters away from him, he starts hitting you more, but inside that with good speed and you will not have much trouble at all.

The AI for many NPC's seems to combine boosting/repping with attacking, if you can keep the target at range so it never attacks (i.e. stays flashy yellow wihtout going to flashy red) then it won't rep either. Once you get close enough that the NPC starts attacking the boosting will continue even if you fly out of range of its weapons, but if you fly a really long way away (200km?) the NPC drops back to non-attacking, non-repping mode.
I've noticed this with the Aether Drone Queen in Parchanier which usually reps 33% of it's armour every 2 seconds and takes 2000+dps to kill. But, I managed to keep her in yellow flashy mode and kill her using only a drake.

I did this easily in my Kestrel fully outfitted missiles, 2 with standard missiles, 2 with FoF missiles, cant remember what dmg types.
Orbited at 30km's, attacked him, he never got close enough to start shooting at me, in fact, i even went afk for bout 5 mins, coming back once a minute to start firing again tho
took bout 15-20 mins, bout 500 missiles total, but got him without a single scratch.

"Mission 49: Our Man Dagan. Dagan flies a 200k isk bounty Battlecruiser. Your frigate probably won't even dent his shields although speed tanking will allow you to kill his supporting frigates. Dagan has the mods most likely to give you fits if you chose unwisely in Mission 48. He's have Defender missiles if you chose Caldari plus Kinetic resistance boosters. He'll have active armor tanking and massive EM/Therm resist if you chose Amarr. He'll throw heavy Kinetic damage missiles if you chose Gallente and may have Target Painting as well. And he'll probably have short range blasters or autocannon if you chose Minmatar and a cap drainer on top of that.
After you've taken out the frigates, figure out what type of damage Dagan is most vulnerable to and then re-configure your cruiser to deal that damage, preferably at a range that Dagan isn't good at. Then get your buddy to come in his cruiser as well and the two of you should whup Dagan easily."

I just beat the caldari path version in a rifter with 3x200mm guns, rocket launcher and 3 gyrostabilizers - and - using a new character with only a minimal amount of skill training - less than 10 hours (8 of which is accounted for by the time taken to train minmatar frigate 3).
Boy, it was tedious.

I remember doing this in my Thorax not to long ago.
I used Hammerhead drones and 3 150 mm rails (Iron ammo).
Just turned on my AB, set to Keep Distance at 25 km, put my drones and guns on him, and got a sandwich while I slowly took him down.

I can't recall what i did to the guy, seeing as it was about 4 months ago, but i do remember that the best tactic against him as a frig/desti pilot is to go in close and personal, since, even without a MWD or after burner, his guns don't have enough tracking if you orbit him at 500. so any blaster + antimatter would give you the best results.

Dagan.. Isn't this the fight where you go close and orbit.. and NOS him? Drain his cap and he will not repair as far as I recall.
Suck the crap out of that fool.

Edited by: Amanita Rookwood on 03/12/2009 14:54:39 Just managed to solo Dagan in a Punisher despite being a fool and choosing Amarr in the previous mission, thus maximising his resists against my EM/Thermal lasers. I had managed to solo Kritsan Parthus in a frigate as a 2 day old character but Dagan was a right royal PITA. In the end I had to skill up for T2 lasers, use Imperial Navy Multifreq's and get the majority of my gunnery skills to 4 before I could break his tank. I know I could have made life a lot easier for myself (not to mention cheaper) but I really wanted to complete the Sisters Arc in a frigate. All in all it took me 11 days.

So, can anyone come up with the *lowest* SP character and ship that can Solo dagan?
I posted a thread over in skills discussion asking this question, and in particular, is there a ship fit which can beat him with only racial frigate only at level 2?

I'm not sure what the 'lowest skillpoints to solo' dagan would be, but I'm still pretty low (2 mil) and alot of those skill points are going towards covops.
with that in mind, I killed him using a firetail (post dominion changes) on the second try... damage type was the key. EMP was not putting out the DPS to break his tank, so I switched to fusion and killed him w/o even having to reload.
mini frig 5 for the most damage boost on the new stats only had small projectiles 3
2 meta 4 200mm autocannon I's and a small nosferatu I, 2 gyro I's and a damage control... set your orbit at 500m and he cannot track you. Again, didn't even have to reload once I picked the right damage type.
From what I've read, his resists and loadout changes depending on which faction you choose to fight for... I picked galente, and his EM resists were quite high, but explosive/kinetic did the trick. ---------------------------------

Well by low SP I mean lower than about 80,000sp - which is roughly how many sp my character had in non-learning skills, and in the end a number of those were completely irrelevant to the arc (drone skills, shield emission, astrometrics).
Base characters start out with 56,489 - so that's the lowest theoretical value.

What a rite of passage.
I just killed Dagan in a Caracal with 5 heavy missle launchers firing Havocs (explosive damage). It takes a while to eat through his shield, then things go quicker. I tried heavy missiles of all four types (EM, Thermal, Explosive, Kinetic). Explosive (Havoc) seemed the best. I'll guess any other weapon inflicting explosive damage would work, too.
It took a while. He closed to about 10 km (I was "fleeing" but he was faster) and hit me with his zapotron gun, but my shields only dropped to 50% and then sustained. Never used my shield booster. (Although I do have a shield extender.)
I also had a Hammerhead 1 drone, but I'm guessing it didn't help that much.

I just killed him solo in my catalyst. 2 Week old character with about 700k skill points, 250k of which are in learning skills.
Fitted as follows: 8x Light Ion Blaster I with Antimatter S 1x Small Sheild Booster 2x Overdrive Injector System I 1x Small 1-A Polarized Armor Regenerator with 1x Hobgoblin I in my drone bay.
The first time I fought him I was helping a friend (who had tried like 5 times to kill him, all unsuccessful in his Thrasher), and I still had my 150mm Railguns fitted. We ended up doing it right away because for some reason he decided to focus fire on my drone, which never got hit.
When I finally caught up and it was my turn to kill him, my friend was offline so I decided to try and solo it. Fitted as mentioned above, killed his friends first, warped out to recharge cap and sheilds, then warped back in. Orbit @ 500 (ended up being closer to 800-900m), staggered my blasters, and launched the drone. I managed to dodge alot of his shots, but still had to occasionally turn on the Sheild Booster. I mostly left it off to save on cap. Tore him up, didn't even have to reload the blasters once. He never even got through my sheild.

Hes designed as a learning experience.
Lessons covered: A: Experiment with ranged tanking. (He cant hit close orbiters, even if he could probably gank an interceptor orbiting at 10k, and he has limited range) B: Nosferatus are just silly against mission NPCs. C: Resistances may not be what you would assume from the ship hull. People fit hardeners. D: "If its too hard, bring a friend". This is the biggest lesson you will learn in eve. (Okay, "Dont trust anyone you cant extract suitable revenge upon in real life" is bigger, but its second. ) Because I can. |

Edited by: Chubby Caulk on 25/01/2010 18:03:52 I managed to down him yesterday using an Arbi. You just have to fit your ship so you can out dps his shield tank and tank his incoming damage indefinitely.
To keep cap stable since he vamps I used two small cap batteries and two small NOS I's. For drones I used Hammerhead I's. My skills aren't great (this char is 7ish days old) so I could only deploy 4 drones but I still managed; it did take a while however.
I owe a lot of my success to the insane fitting flexibility of the Arbi :P.

This is how I beat Dagan on a two day old character. Orbit at 500m, and Dagan cant track. Turned out to be much easier in a frigate than a destroyer. Dagan could hit a destroyer at close orbit, but not a frigate. Took about 10-15 minutes. This worked against Kristan Parthus too, he neuted but the natural cap regen was enough to refire guns everytime it capped out.

I just managed to do this with fewer than 70,000 SP (beating my previous record of just over 80ksp) - started with a gallente pilot and used drones and railguns for most missions. For the last few missions I used an Imicus with 3 hobgoblins, 2 light neutrons (CNAmS) , 2xmagstabs and civilian shield boosters and afterburners in the mids. This squeezed out enough DPS with minimal skills to break dagan's tank. I was purposely trying to do this with as few sp as possible so I didn't train Gallente frigate from 2->3, which meant I couldn't use the Incursus or Tristan (or catalyst). Having done this, I thinking that I could've probably got away with just 2 drones and flown a Maulus or atron for most missions.

ps - once you've taken out the escort fleet, salvage. I didn't and by the time I was finished with Dagan the wrecks were gone.
