Hi,
Considering the amount of smack that has been talked about projectiles and the vargur, I dare to say its the best level 4 mission solo running boat eve currently has.
This is what I fly in missions:
[Vargur, Mission] Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Damage Control II
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Caldari Navy Shield Boost Amplifier Caldari Navy Shield Boost Amplifier Caldari Navy Invulnerability Field Caldari Navy Invulnerability Field
800mm Repeating Artillery II, Barrage L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, Barrage L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, Barrage L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, Barrage L [empty high slot] [empty high slot] Drone Link Augmentor I
Projectile Ambit Extension II Projectile Ambit Extension II
--- I swap in the fitting screen to:
[Vargur, Salvage] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Inertia Stabilizers II
100MN MicroWarpdrive II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Salvager I Salvager I Salvager I
Projectile Ambit Extension II Projectile Ambit Extension II
--- Thus I have only one ship to mission. Omitank, permarun, I can switch ammo-types reasonably, I get 65km falloff. I get tracking to hit cruisers orbiting at 6km.
Frigates and Cruisers mostly die on their way towards or away from me, battleships melt, and the salvaging is really fast, too.
--- So where do I go next? What can I upgrade (besides the faction Gyrostabs)? Have you got anything better?
Hopefully you can hint me to some improvements. Or I could hint you guys to some. :)

Its the best by far, because allmost all you kill is at tractor range if you wait for npcs to be closer than 40km.
Said this... some ideas
Fit two tractors in your gank fit. Tract the wrecks while killing so when you go to salvage most or all of the wrecks are just there and fit 6 salvagers + 1 tractor in your salvage fit.
Improve your drones if you didn't.
Take out tank and fit a painter/high range statis/whatever.
Change your small pithis for one mod.
Plug out projectile extensions and replace them with something more usefull (dmg/semi). Barrage has enough range. You want npc to come close. Wait for them so you can tractor without moving.
If you don't like tractors in your gank one, fit a vampire.
Take out the Drone link. 57km drone range its enough for the "I wait for you to come, melt and tract your wreck with no move".
Take out the DCU. It doesn't help so much.
Make some more fitting files with resis for specific rats so you can improve your efficiency (AKA npcpwn).

Edited by: Thirzarr on 12/03/2009 17:18:54 Drones I mostly use 5 med / 5 small, hardly ever need them, since the ACs rip apart anything faster then the drones travel.
The Med Gist B Booster would be something. Expensive, but freeing one med. Hm... Maybe a sensorbooster for faster locktimes after jamming? Drone speed thingy to make them move faster? It would only get some fraction of percents of killspeed, I'm afraid. An AB seems the most tempting addition. Altho... most mission with gate at range I start flying towards it and then start blasting everything out of my way.
The nice thing about this setup ist that I don't need to swap tank for anything. DCUs are pretty spiffy for this. It's lazy, really is.
Might think about tractoring wrecks during missions to salvage even faster. Good point. On the other hand salvaging is pretty smooth with 40k tractors and 3 salvagers as harly any module ever gets any downtime. But I'll try it.
As for the rigs - I've tried several other combinations, but the falloff ones are just perfect for AC, since the chance to hit is increasing drastcally the further below 1x falloff you get them rats. With a 65km falloff 40km is at 71% falloff (65+6opt) thats when I usually open fire. No other dmg-mod gets you the same dps increase at 40km range. *edit* not to mention the difference at those pesty guristas that just stay at 50-55km.
---
There is ONE ship that gets close to this and even surpasses it in SOME missions if you do not count the salvaging range: The 4 Tachyon 4 Heatsink Nightmare. But it tends to spread the NPC-wrecks all over the place. Big up: Tachyons + 4 Heatsinks = one-shotting battlecruisers. That feels a bit awesome. ;)

I've used both the 800 AC and the 1200 Arty setups. I tend to do the 4 Gyro, 1 PDU, Xlgr SB, 3x Invul, 1 Tracking Comp (1 AB or second TC if using Arty), 4 guns, 3 Tractors.
I agree that it is an incredible mission runner, but I also have 8.5M SP in gunnery.
The TC's with Tracking scripts mean almost always hitting when in range. One shot many cruiser class with arty. Melts Angel BS's up close. Dance like it hurts, Love like you need money, Work when people are watching. - Scott Adams |

Insta-popping ships out to 90+km every 3 seconds or so is just bliss.
I am more than happy to fly one of the most underrated ships in EvE

I think your right, the vargur and golem are tied I would say though. Those are the two that actually sell when I build them as well. Go figuer :p

Shhhhhhhh
You better say vargur sucks. Otherwise it will be nerfed and minmatars would have nothing remarkable anymore.

That truly would be lame, since the T1 Minny battleships are pretty universally sucky.

30 something km optimal and it spreads the wrecks all over the place? I fail to see your argument.
now paladin can do the same (usually 3 hs though) and fit tractor beams.
