I've spent more than 3 hours after dt today, trying to find out how to get into a wormhole, and i'm totally fustrated. I've read 3 guides, but it just didn't help. The scan results seemed completely random. For example i got a scan result and that red bubble (the one that shows in which area the sig is), when i covered it completely with smaller bubbles, (e.g. 4 au sized bubble covered with many 2 au bubbles), i suddenly didn't get any result at all. I then made one bigger bubble, and the red bubble suddenly became much bigger. When i finally got a red circle between the bubbles and placed more smaller bubbles covering the circle, the circle disappeared, and there were no signs of anything, although the result was showing on scanner. Also i didn't get over 20% strenght ever, sometimes the scanner didn't work well too, it closed but didn't open again. It's a total mess. It is not intuitive. That were 3 hours of pure frustartion. If you bring this like it is now on the M10 expansion, i can guarantee you 100% that apocrypha is going to be a huge fail, and a reputation damage for CCP. Before bringing such a broking system to TQ better cancel scanning from the feature list and allow people to get to wormholes in another way, till you invent a working scanning system.

Actually.. the new scan system does kinda suck but, when Apocrypha does actually come out, it would be nice if CCP added some kind of in-depth step by step tutorial, & also, explaining what the red circles & different colored dots mean.

pffffft, the new system is great. you just need to get used to it, i can get most things in 2 scans, its too easy if you ask me. Note that i didnt read any guides, it took me approx 1H30m to figure out how to do the probing properly. Though, in hindsight; I really should put in some sort of spacer between my post and signature |

First of all, scanning is very intuitive. You don't really need a guide to understand how it works. REALLY!
Secondly, the current SISI patch is bugged. It will get fixed again in the next patch. Always keep that in mind when testing something on SISI, it can be BROKEN.
My opinions belong to me, you can't have them!

gree on this one. New system is more easy then previus. Just to play around and you finely will manage how to do.
The key is use boxed scaning. ( soround the signature)
Circels means that you have to place probes ( again in box) on the red lines to get best hit.
Spheres mean you have to cover this are since the signal is somewhere inside this sphere.
Dots are your best frends. use smalest range on probes and just cover with each border of probe this dot from 4 difrent direction.
Bingo you got your first site/ wormhole ===== * Your signature file is broken. Please use one that will display - Fallout |

I like the new scanning system. Its the way Probes should be. i was kind of dissapointed at first (with the old system) when i went to fire off a probe towards a couple of plannets and found that you had to warp there first, de-cloak and drop a stationary probe. kinda makes it hard to be secretative about the whole thing.
i was scanning last night with no problems, found a few grav sites etc. so much quicker than the old system

I'm now fairly confident CCP will fix most of the bugs regarding scanning before or shortly after release.
I do however believe the new system is better than the old one because it requires more from the player and less from the character. In a space based game you are expected to understand how space, distances and angles work. Especially if you call yourself an explorer. So what they have done is bring exactly that into the gameplay.
Right now there are still several bugs in the system but the basis is solid I think. Just gets some used to and to be effective requires a bit more spatial thinking.
Regards,
M.M.

i dont believe he thinks of himself that way. nor is that an exceptional time frame.

Fortunately, they seem to have fixed this. I still can't get off a successful scan. Did they fix it? If others are getting clean scans I'll chalk it up to my incompetence.

There are those that disagree with the whole system. I think these indidivuals here, however, are having problem with the latest version released.
This latest patch has apparently screwed up some things, so scanning is not working very well. Test it, bug report it, and put your opinions and clearly as possible. That's why were here on SiSi, after all.

Oh, I have no problem with the ideas behind the system. I'm just finding it hard to have any success useing it. It would be nice to have a way of finding out if my trouble is because something is broken or because I need to learn more clearly how to operate it.

hmm. short term memory loss. just thinking about the fact that sisi didnt even have the scanner working just a week ago. now not only is it working( still buggy as hell) but you can actually get sites. oh and yes. this patch changed around a bit the chances of getting a hit. there now working on other sites rather then just wormholes. we tested the **** out of them and thew were very well done. so chill there man. in due time you will get a game that pwn. and you will be happy.

Yeah, I was running tests of this for the last few days. System was working (if a tad TOO exact and simplified). Haven't been able to test this morning, just going off what others have said and reported.

Currently there are some interface bugs which prevent you from scanning effectively at all (at random you lose critical interface elements or the probes/scan results stop responding/updating), I'll wait until those are fixed before spending hours to work around them
We used to be able to center the camera on probes, that would be nice also... or centering it on a red/orange dot. Primarily to prevent working from an impossible angle if the nearest celestial is a bit away.

I almost love all the bugs too because it's even better when people don't know how to work around them easily.

I like the new system. Its great. Scanning is now actually an active task where u do something instead of pressing a button and just wait few minutes.
You really did a good job on that CCP!

I hope it's only a bug then, because if not the whole system makes no sense and has nothing to do with intuitive gameplay but just a grief tool. Will give it another try after next patch.

Edited by: Lilith Velkor on 04/03/2009 00:55:56 @OP:
The easy way to scan out sites got nerfed away by deviation it seems, and the hinting dots are gone.
Try it like this (if you have patience to work around the bugs in the UI):
1) launch a single core probe at 32au range and probe for spheres
2) work a sphere to a decent sig str (>30), needs trial and error with movement, adjust range when you get closer
3) launch a second probe, and try to get a ring
4) work the ring to 100% (yes 100%, less will only make the next step very tedious), adjust range as needed
5) make probes 1+2 inactive and leave them where they are (so you can re-probe your ring for reference)
6) launch 4 more core probes, and scan along the ring (after each try, re-probe ring for reference so you can see where you wanna try next), range should be .5-.25 au this time
I cant stress step 5 enough really, do this or regret it
On a side note, while it was a bit too easy in the last patch, the current implementation seems a bit hardcore imo, can imagine not many people have the patience to do it (more so with the current buggy UI).

I don't know what else there is to tell you...
The old system was a grief tool. The new system is very easy. (when it works)
If you (after getting to test a working version) still think it's worse than the old system then i think there is nothing left to be done. Majority rule says the new system is better than the old.

Just got to get used to it, it takes quite a bit longer, but I've scanned down a few profession sites and a wormhole today with deviation in effect.
Still, maybe deviation impact is a bit too harsh (45 mins up to 1.5 hours to probe a site), but could also be my low probing skills.

I'm going to miss that actually. There were in fact times when I liked to play afk while reading and no mining doesn't appeal to me.

Actually, the concept is really good and the interface the have implemented has seen major improvements over the last week or so. It's currently a bit bugged with the displayed results not working correctly and with the window disappearing every now and then.
In terms of ability to move probes around and to visualise what you are doing it is excellent.
