If your 12 yearold son really made that without any help then you should consider giving him more challenges like that, developing his skills and (obvious) interest in building stuff, cause he'll make a good engineer/architect when he's older (if he wants to go that route).

Heh. That's good work for a 12-year-old. Probably sturdier than the 'real' thing.
I can remember doing a similar thing with Lego when I was a kid with my mind fired up by Star Wars, only my attempts at building TIE fighters and X-wings were never as good as that (mind you, '70's Lego was a bit more basic). Lego is just such a superb kid's toy.
If your son can play EVE without getting bored, then it will be a great form of mental stimulation for him, and help him understand a lot of the more abstract elements of human society, such as economics. This is a far better option than so many of those mindless games out there.

My son is 12 y/o and whilst I dont want him swearing like a trooper he hears much worse at school. Our guys in corp know to "tone it down" a bit when he is on with me. I only let him play when I am online with him. Besides, I would never "molly coddle" him, hopeully I can prepare him for whatever he faces in the world. BTW, he has had a much bigger leg up than I got when I started eve, He can fly tech 2 frig and has all his learning and boring skills to lvl 5
He is loving it so far but finds the long ops boring, he likes non stop action which is something he will have to learn to cope with. Still waiting for a big loss to truly test his mettle! So whilst helping him on the steep curve I try not to hold his hand too much, but when its your son sometimes you cant help it
Anyway, thanks for all the nice comments, I cant wait to show him the thread. I think he will be pleased.

Also, your son is flippin awesome. His use of a consistent color scheme, the accuracy of the build, and the creative use of parts is fantastic. He captured the wingy bits very well, and that upper thruster took me by surprise. Using a Star Wars droid???? Nice idea. All I've managed to make so far is a Condor, but it kinda sucks and thats off topic anyway.
A tempest is a good idea, but if you really want to challenge him Minmatar-wise, I say give him the Hurricane to do. First of all I've never beenn able to figure out how to capture the angles myself, I LOVE hurricanes, and it's also one of the few minmatar ships with more interesting forms.

12year olds aren't really known for their patience and taking losses very well, he will probably need some help to get over that (dunno your son ofc), I hope he keeps playing (1 less kid thats gets tempted to play the game that shouldn't be mentioned) and I bet he is the youngest eve player.

Thanks for the real nice comments, Its appreciated. When he got home from school I showed him the thread and he was really pleased, so pleased in fact he is going to make some more, so we spent some time looking at screenies of different ship models. He would love to try a megathron but the angles are really hard to replicate in lego. He has collected lego since he was about 5 years old so has a fairly large collection ranging from lego basic, star wars, and city. He has alot of lego racers that work well for "imaginary" stuff too. We settled on trying a phoon. Although I never help him, I try to let him work it out and only make small suggestions.
I will keep you all posted on his progress.
BTW, he now has decided he wants his own Character so I have stopped the training on my alt and he has made a character all of his own, He even turned down some ISK to get him started One very proud Dad

As a former graphic artist, noaways hobby artist, your kid got some great potential for modelling.
It may seem like "oh he made a nice copy", but those copies show some innovative ways to arrange pieces for optimal likeness while keeping a "balanced" color scheme.

Yes thats correct, Megedagik is an alt I made, I took a long break from eve, around 18 months and have recently come back to the game. My son decided to make his own character, but after some thought he has decided to keep playing with the character I made, Megedagik Parris. although he was created a long time ago he only has 7 million SP but has all the "boring stuff" done like learning skill etc. I hope that clears it up for you

LEGO Digital Designer
and for anyone who wants to build stuff out of Lego but don't have the parts. You can buy your build directly from Lego too! (parts selection is a little limited though)
For a full-featured limitless-part 3d Lego program, check out *LDraw*. It's a more complex third-party application that allows you to use any parts to put stuff together, and then render the models. Being third party, you can't buy em though. -------

Awesome Job mate, I'm only 16 so my lego stage wasn't THAT long ago (Gave up kinda at 10-12, but still enjoyed playing them with my much younger brothers for years afterwards, before family problems anyway..) But, anyway, thats a really good job, the best I ever managed to do with Lego is make towers and buildings and teh likes, (long since dust) xD.
Good to see such a young player in Eve too, its rare to find someone under 18, most teenagers don't have the patience for it. I still can't get any of my friends to play, and they often stir me up for playing such a complex and slow game. I think they'd be embarresed that a 12 year old has more patience then they do xD.
Also, try GMAX if you want a 3d modelling program, completely free and somewhat pro. I started toying with it a few years ago and had some fun experimenting. If you have any of the games it supports you could even put his creations into games and the likes.
Looking foward to the Abaddon, that golden monstrisity is one of the few ships in EvE my Dad thinks looks normal xD.
If you want any help, I'd be glad to doante some time ingame with either of my two characthers, or even give you some PVP tips and tricks that Iv'e learnt over the past year or so.

But once you get involved in your first fleet battle, you get hooked.
I'm in the generation that grew up on Star Wars (and my Lego phase was so long ago, I think some of my bricks may have been used in the Berlin Wall), and then progressed onto a game called Elite, which was the EVE of its day. Once I experienced my first big battle in EVE, it certainly evoked the enthusiasm I experienced then.
I think it's good to see younger players getting involved in a more cerebral game that promotes thinking and strategy, rather than the endless hordes of one man army clones (if that doesn't seem like a contradiction in itself). It's more involving, sure, but the sense of achievement is greater.
It's a shame your friends don't have the patience for it, but that's the way it is with people though. I have a friend who tried EVE, and he just couldn't get into it, despite being a bigger sci-fi fan than I am.

Hi Eagle!
Yeah, it is hard to find teenagers with the patience for eve. I myself started when I was 15, and there was hardly anyone close to my age. It's a similar thing with Lego; you'll usually be hard pressed to find a teenager who still actively plays with them. (I'm a college freshman now and I brought some Lego along with me lol)
I'll second GMAX, however if I recall correctly from more Halo-playing days it's kind of a fiddly program, but still pretty good for freeware.
I'll also second the offer, and I've got a collection of Lego-based sites with very nice galleries, helpful building tips, and lots of inspiration.
Originally by: Scagga Laebetrovo Query, are these ships doable?
Everything and anything is doable. It's just a matter of how you want to do it. Flat plates and slopes: Blackbird Angled plateds with an interior substructure: Lego Star Destroyer Modified Parts and non-Lego parts (kind of a gray area here, but still viable): "EPP-9" Horizonatally placed bricks: Vaygr Bomber (yes, this one is straight up Lego.) And that's just the tip of the iceberg...

I hope you like my effort at the Abaddon. It was really hard cos I had to do it with lego basic. and its really hard to get smooth shapes without scaling up to huge amounts of lego. I gave it my best shot though. I hope its good enough to please Lord Berk though
The Minmatar ship are much easier cos they are lots of sticky out bits and you can be a bit more creative with the lego. Smooth designs are tougher to do.
Thank you to Smagd for the stuff. I got a corp mate to build it for me. Just 8 days to evasive manouvering 5!! then I can fly it -MegeDagik

Wow, this takes me back to when I was building stuff out of lego. Still have a cubic meter somewhere....
Do you have technic? I thnik some of its more, well, techie bits would be great for minmatar ships.
Keep up the good work! Now, onto a Tempest:)

Good effort though.

I hate to say it but that's a pretty poor looking lego Abaddon. It's not your son's fault, he just doesn't have the right building materials. Buy him more lego so he can make a proper Abaddon! -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

Edited by: Sadao on 08/03/2009 16:15:33 Can I just say in my sons defense to all the whingers that its not as good, He has a limited supply of lego, as was explained in the Abaddon post. To make it more realistic would require upscaling by a huge amount. I think, and so do my corp mates and others in the thread, that he made a pretty good attempt given the resources he has
And besides I agree with Z0de, its on classic settings :p
